(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the high water mark for one-location thrillers: the central siege in John Carpenter's 1976 classic "Assault on Precinct 13.")
There's a hypothetical version of "Assault on Precinct 13" out there that does away with the restraint and foreboding atmosphere of the original, recklessly tossed out in favor of high-wire thrills and a never-ending collection of narrative tropes. In place of a handful of straightforward (yet effective) archetypes thrown together as strangers but who come out as something else altogether after the crucible of one endlessly violent night, someone might've had the inclination to try and "humanize" these characters by burdening them with edgy backstories or an overcomplicated plot. In essence, imagine stripping away all the idiosyncrasy and personality just to end up with another generic action/thriller.

An action movie is created to excite and wow us, taking the audience on a rollercoaster ride to see if and how our protagonist — who may or may not be much of a hero — survives amid pure chaos. It’s also a genre that often strives to top itself. Many of our favorite films have found new ways to raise the bar, whether it be through the storytelling, cast, or sequences that completely change the game.
Den of Geek is celebrating 15 movies that looked forward, whether they were celebrated in their day as innovators or have been finally reevaluated years after release. All of these action movies were ahead of their time, whether it be through never-before-seen fight choreography and stunt work or advancements in special effects and storytelling.
Seven Samurai (1954)
Yeah, we all know that one film nerd who gets on your case about watching Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai at least once.

"I've got three shots – that's enough!" "Can't argue with a confident man." Newly restored in 4K, Assault on Precinct 13 is back on the big screen—loud, beautiful, and inescapable, as it was always meant to be seen. The American Genre Film Archive (Agfa), the largest non-profit genre film archive and distributor in the world, has released a brand new trailer for the 4K re-release of Carpenter's 1976 action classic. This brutally violent, gritty film from the 1970s was made before Carpenter went on to direct Halloween, Escape from New York, The Thing, and everything else. Screw the 2005 remake (don't watch it) this is the real shit. A Highway Patrol Officer, two criminals and a station secretary defend a defunct Los Angeles precinct office against a siege by a bloodthirsty street gang. Starring Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer, Martin West, and Tony Burton. Growing up, I remember watching this because my...

Earlier this month, a 4K restoration of director John Carpenter‘s 1976 action thriller classic Assault on Precinct 13 played at the Globe Cinema in Calgary for three days. Now the 4K restoration is set to reach more theatres across the U.S. and Canada, rolling out over the next two months! The American Genre Film Archive is responsible for this 4K theatrical re-release, and the company’s theatrical director Bret Berg had this to say about it: “It’s an honor to represent Carpenter’s legacy, given how much personal joy his work has created for us. When it’s something as iconic as Precinct 13 – akin to the heartstopping majesty of Halloween – we’re driven to get this taut masterwork in front of as many audiences as we can. Big thanks to the Ckk Corporation for shepherding this new restoration.”

“Written, directed, scored, and edited by Carpenter two years prior to Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13 combines the template of Night of the Living Dead with the spirit of Rio Bravo to forge a movie like no other. The story follows a group of police officers (including the mighty Austin Stoker) and convicts as they join forces inside a soon-to-be-closed L.A. police station. The reason? They must defend themselves against Street Thunder, a vicious gang who have taken a blood oath to kill someone trapped inside the precinct.
“Combining gritty action with arthouse style, the film features powerful Cinemascope compositions, a pulsing synth score, and an immersive mood that only Carpenter can deliver.”

When filmmaker John Carpenter first set out to make 1976's "Assault on Precinct 13," even he couldn't have imagined just how big of an impact he was about to make with the violent, seminal crime drama about the most unlikely of bedfellows joining forces in a desperate big to fend off an attack on a defunct police precinct. Written, directed, edited, and scored by Carpenter and packed with its fair share of controversy, the film wasn't quite the well-received hit that younger film fans may have assumed it was at the time. Like many classics, "Assault on Precinct 13" required some time for audiences to warm up to it and, particularly, the exploitation vibe Carpenter was trying to evoke.
Now with its legacy — and that of the remarkably distinctive director himself — fully established, Carpenter fans all across the United States are about to receive some exciting news. Alamo Drafthouse, the Texas-based chain...

Rob Zombie's Firefly family returns for a real day of the dead in the 3 From Hell trailer.
Free the three! Now we can have a real day of the dead. Just when you thought there was no justice in this world, the first full-length 3 From Hell trailer promises a bloodbath and a devil of a time. The odds were a million to one against Capt. Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis Firefly (Bill Moseley), and Vera-Ellen "Baby" Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie) surviving their standoff with the police at their last rampage, but with a little faith, nothing is impossible.
3 From Hell is a family movie. The Firefly family has a deadly tradition going back to 2003, with Rob Zombie's directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses making way for the 2005 sequel The Devil's Rejects. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, the trilogy tells the story of Dr. Satan and his merry band of murderous misfits.

Rob Zombie has officially blown the lid off his upcoming threequel 3 From Hell, and it keeps looking better and better the more we see of it.
Kicking off the summer with a bang, Zombie sent horror fans into a tizzy just last month with a delightfully tantalizing teaser trailer, which offered a quick glimpse into the twisted world of his follow-up to The Devil’s Rejects. And though many are already sold on the idea of 3 From Hell, the musician-cum-filmmaker has now given us another preview, and this one’s a lot more meaty, showing off some of the gruesome violence that the threequel will no doubt deliver in spades. Not to mention a better look at its impressive cast, which is headlined by Sheri Moon Zombie, Sid Haig and Bill Moseley.

And though many are already sold on the idea of 3 From Hell, the musician-cum-filmmaker has since announced that a new, extended preview will be released next month – just in time for the film’s theatrical release in September.
That’s right; we can expect 3 From Hell to hit the big screen in three months’ time, by which point we should have a better understanding of Zombie’s master plan for Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis (Bill Moseley), and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie).
Here’s a little status report, courtesy of the director’s Facebook...

Following on from Rob Zombie’s social media countdown, the first 3 From Hell trailer finally arrived yesterday and though it certainly provided our best look yet at the upcoming sequel to 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects, it still didn’t reveal a whole lot.
Running for just under a minute, it provided a tantalizing tease of the chaos to come but crucially, left out any real plot details. As such, fans have a lot of questions and now, Zombie’s taken to Facebook to answer some of them. Among other things, he’s addressed when, exactly, 3 From Hell takes place, with many wondering how much time has passed since the last film.
As it turns out, not long has passed at all, with the director explaining that his latest effort takes place immediately after The Devil’s Rejects. Of course, Zombie followed that up by addressing the next most pressing question: how did Baby,...

A lot of people say that is his best film, and it is also a spinoff of A House of 1,000 Corpses. This first teaser for 3 From Hell, features the Firefly Family… back from the dead.
Sheri Moon Zombie reprises her role as Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly, Sid Haig is back as Captain Spaulding, Bill Moseley is Otis Driftwood, and Jeff Daniel Phillips plays Warden Virgil Dallas Harper. The film also stars Danny Trejo (Machete), Clint Howard (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Richard Brake (Batman Begins), Dee Wallace (The Howling), and Austin Stoker(Assault on Precinct 13).

"I suggest you get ready to burn." They're back for more! Horror filmmaker Rob Zombie revealed the first official teaser trailer for his next film, titled 3 From Hell, and it's now available to view (in high def) below. 3 From Hell is a sequel to Rob Zombie's first two movies - House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. Captain Spaulding played by Sid Haig, Otis played by Bill Moseley, and Baby played by Sheri Moon Zombie will all be "returning from the dead in 3 From Hell, after being shot hundreds of times in the final moments of Rejects." Nothing else is known about the plot beyond that, and this teaser doesn't provide any details as to what the hell is going on. The film's full cast includes Richard Brake, Danny Trejo, Kevin Jackson, Wade Williams, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Clint Howard, Pancho Moler, Daniel Roebuck, Emilio Rivera, Austin Stoker,...

Following on from Rob Zombie’s social media countdown, the first 3 From Hell trailer is finally here, offering our best look yet at the upcoming sequel to 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects.
It’s been a long journey for Zombie’s latest feature, with principal photography wrapping back in April of last year. In the months since, the director has stayed active on social media with updates and set pics, though has largely kept plot details to himself. One of the key locations for shooting was the Sybil Brand Institute, a decommissioned women’s prison in Los Angeles, and from the look of things, the film’s titular trio will find themselves behind bars.
The cast is led by Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon Zombie and Sid Haig, who reprise their roles as Otis B. Driftwood, Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly and Captain Spaulding, respectively. Of course, they’ll be also be joined...

The terrifying trio of Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis (Bill Moseley), and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) return in the first trailer for Rob Zombie's 3 From Hell.
While Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding were last seen (spoiler warning if you haven't watched The Devil's Rejects) driving into a barrage of bullets at a police barricade that ended their hellish road trip, they appear to be alive and well (albeit in the custody of law enforcement) in the sequel's teaser trailer (see below), which was revealed on Rob Zombie's Instagram.
In addition to Moseley, Sheri, Haig, and Phillips, the cast of 3 From Hell includes Dee Wallace, Austin Stoker, Tom Papa, David Ury, Clint Howard, Emilio Rivera, Daniel Roebuck, and Dot-Marie Jones. While a specific release date has yet to be announced, 3 From Hell is slated to come out later this year.

The high school bully has long been a staple in cinema, genre related or not; every David needs a Goliath, and every school is loaded with both. When producers realized that teens were showing up to drive-ins (whether to watch the movie or not), a lot of films began to cater to the Clearasil crowd, especially horror. I Was A Teenage this and I Was A Nuclear that flooded the market - for a time, that is. The next big wave happened in the ‘70s with the watershed Carrie (1976) getting every studio to open their notebooks (and check books too), with naturally very mixed results. Leading up to Cassie White and her hormonal blowout was Horror High (1973), a fun, gritty, and goofy update of the Teenage movies of the ‘50s filtered through Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

Well, this is an awfully nice surprise to end the week on, now isn’t it?
After dropping a new set photo from his highly anticipated sequel to The Devil’s Rejects, Three From Hell, just last week, director Rob Zombie continues to make the wait easier on fans by giving them juicy looks at the film. The latest comes in the form of what’s perhaps the best one yet, too, as he’s now shared the first teaser trailer for the threequel. Or at least, a recording of it.
Seen below, the director’s hopped on Instagram to bring us a low quality recording of the preview, which is being shown off during his Twins of Evil tour with Marilyn Manson. There’s no word on when it may surface online in glorious HD, but for now, you can give it a watch down below.

The Black Satans are coming to 3 From Hell, Rob Zombie’s highly anticipated follow-up to cult favorite The Devil’s Rejects. Who they are exactly remains a mystery, but apparently they’re pretty badass. Or at least, that’s according to yet another new photo shared on the director’s always active Instagram feed.
Yes, Zombie’s at it again, taking to social media to keep his fans updated and in the loop. Unfortunately, this pic isn’t pulled from the film itself, but rather, it’s a behind the scenes snap taken on set that shows us how Emilio Rivera will appear in 3 From Hell. His character hasn’t been revealed just yet, but given his history on Sons of Anarchy, fans are speculating he’s playing a member of a motorcycle gang, which could be what The Black Satans is referring to in the caption below:

Part of what made Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects such a hit amongst fans was that it boasted a wide array of colorful and entertaining characters. Many of whom, in fact, could’ve probably spawned spinoffs of their own. Chief among those is The Unholy Two, comprised of bounty hunters Rondo (Danny Trejo) and Billy Ray Snapper (Diamond Dallas Page). And while we know that the former will be back for the sequel, 3 From Hell, what about the latter?
Well, according to Page, there’s just no room in the film for him. Apparently, he spoke with Zombie about it and over on Twitter, the wrestler-turned actor explained to fans that they couldn’t find a way to fit Snapper into the story.
Talked with @RobZombie about #3FromHell and Billy Ray Sniper just didn’t fit into the story. @officialDannyT is going to be an Unholy One this time around.

As you’ve surely heard, Danny Trejo, star of Machete, Grindhouse and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, is on board for 3 From Hell, the Rob Zombie horror threequel that’s now finished production and will soon be cut together once the director returns from tour later this summer.
Of course, Trejo is just one part of an impressive cast, which also boasts the return of Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding), Bill Moseley (Otis) and Sheri Moon Zombie (Baby), who captured the imagination of horror fans the world over with their performances across both House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects. Speaking of which, we understand Trejo plans to reprise his role as Rondo from the latter feature, which summoned the Firefly Family into theaters almost a decade ago. Now, they’re on the verge of a comeback.

It must be said, cult horror director Rob Zombie has been doing a pretty effective job at keeping us in the loop and invested in the production of the upcoming 3 from Hell, all while keeping plot details tantalizingly vague.
The steady stream of information continues today with another Instagram post featuring a trio of smartly dressed men on the set of the long-awaited follow-up to 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses and 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects. Seen in the gallery below, it came accompanied with the following caption: Another Three From Hell exclusive! The suits are always dealing with The Rejects insanity. Featuring in this shot Kevin Jackson, Wade Williams and @jeffdanielphillips.
Since it’s already been heavily implied that a legal trial will be a key point of focus in the movie, it’s safe to assume that these men will be dealing with the criminal case of 3 from Hell‘s titular psychos.

Rob Zombie has been hard at work directing his new film Three From Hell, which is a sequel to The Devil's Rejects. The director recently shared a teaser poster featuring Bill Moseley as Otis Driftwood, who has a "message for the man". The poster also reveals that the movie won't be released until 2019 and there will be four more character posters released.
Zombie has also shared a bunch of photos from the film on his Instagram account that I thought I'd share featuring several other members from the cast which includes Sheri Moon Zombie as Vera-Ellen “Baby” Firefly, Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding. Ask any self-respecting horror fan what their most anticipated upcoming film in the genre is and you’ll probably hear answers like Blumhouse’s Halloween sequel, Corin Hardy’s The Nun, or perhaps Fox’s reimagining of The Predator. And while those are all solid choices, our pick is probably Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, the follow-up to his 2005 cult classic, The Devil’s Rejects.
The director’s movies certainly aren’t for everyone, what with their gritty, grimy and often sadistic nature, but those who can stomach them often like what they see and his next effort is shaping up to be something truly special. Though it’s currently unknown how exactly the titular trio – that’d be Baby, Otis and Captain Spaulding – survived the brutal police shootout at the end of Rejects, we know that they’re set to return for the threequel and if Zombie’s to be believed,...

Rob Zombie is prepped and ready to close out his trilogy.

There’s just one problem, though, and that’s that given what we saw the last time they were on screen, the three main characters shouldn’t still be amongst the living.

You’ve gotta love Rob Zombie.
After telling us just yesterday that his highly anticipated sequel to The Devil’s Rejects, 3 From Hell, won’t be ready until next year, the director’s been making the wait easier on fans by giving them juicy looks at the film. First, it was two photos that showed us Baby and Otis, who were apparently in court and on trial for their crimes.
Now, Zombie’s back to deliver even more goodies and this time, he’s shared a shot of Captain Spaulding, who’s in prison and behind bars. But that’s not all, as the beloved filmmaker has also brought us another pic, which focuses on Jeff Daniel Phillips, who’s apparently playing Virgil Dallas Harper, the prison’s warden that’ll have to deal with Spaulding and the others.
Though neither photo is terribly revealing, it’s still great...

Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) and Otis (Bill Moseley) return (sans tutti f—in' frutti ice cream) in new images from Rob Zombie's 3 From Hell, the anticipated sequel to The Devil's Rejects and House of 1000 Corpses.
Rob Zombie shared the 3 From Hell images of on Instagram with the following captions:
"A Three From Hell exclusive! First shot of an angry Otis addressing the media after a long day in court. Justice! Free The Three!
A Three From Hell exclusive! A somber Baby is escorted from court and back to prison. Justice! Free The Three!"
While Otis and Baby were last seen (spoiler warning if you haven't watched The Devil's Rejects) driving into a barrage of bullets at a police barricade that ended their hellish road trip, they appear to be alive and well (albeit in the custody of law enforcement) in the sequel.
In addition to Moseley and Sheri, the...

Unfortunately, it may be a while before we get our first official look at Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects sequel. Titled 3 From Hell, the pic has now finished shooting, but as the director told us just earlier this morning, he won’t get around to editing it until this summer. Presumably, that means a mid-2019 release is what they’re aiming for – though that’s yet to be confirmed.
Being the good guy that he is though, and knowing how hungry fans are for a glimpse of what kind of madness he’s cooking up, Zombie’s been dropping a few goodies on his Instagram page, the latest of which come in the form of two photos from the film. Well, they’re actually pulled from the camera screen, it seems, given what’s bordering them, but these still technically count as our first look at 3 From Hell...

You’ve visited the House of 1000 Corpses and bore witness to The Devil’s Rejects; now it’s (almost) time to lay eyes on Rob Zombie’s latest creative effort, 3 From Hell. And it seems the long-rumored threequel has already hit the ground running.
Yes, after the carnival-centric 31 back in 2016, the director has returned to The Devil’s Rejects and its seedy universe, and it’s looking increasingly likely that the somewhat contentious filmmaker will be welcoming viewers on a trip into the fiery depths of the underworld in the not-so-distant future.
Be that as it may, production has now wrapped, with Bill Moseley – who’s returning as Otis, alongside Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding) and Sheri Moon Zombie (Baby), who captured the imagination of horror fans the world over with their performances across both House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects – taking to Facebook to share a promising update.

Just when you think Rob Zombie has completed his casting spree for 3 From Hell – which, for those who don’t know, is the in-development sequel to The Devil’s Rejects – he adds yet another familiar face. This time, it’s Richard Riehle, who you may recognize from his role as Jim Permatteo in Hatchet but who’s also worked with Zombie on Halloween II, where he played Buddy the Night Watchman.
And so, following the back-to-back addition of Pancho Moler (31) and Machete star Danny Trejo, 3 From Hell‘s casting docket is now full – or so it seems – boasting Riehle, Clint Howard, whose Mr. Baggy Britches is all set to become the second tortured clown of Ruggsville, Austin Stoker (Assault on Precinct 13), Dee Wallace (The Howling, Cujo), Jeff Daniel Phillips (Halloween II), Dot-Marie Jones (American Horror Story) and Tom Papa, (who’s perhaps best known as El Superbeasto). David Ury,...
