Make no mistake: The Watch is inspired by Terry Pratchett’s Discworld offshoot series, The City Watch, but the BBC America series is very much its own animal, much the way Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency took its own direction from Douglas Adams’ novel on the same network. However, if the trailer coming out of New York Comic-Con’s virtual panel is any indication, there’s plenty of chaotic fun to be had in this version of the story.
The eight episodes of The Watch‘s inaugural season will follow recognizable characters such as City Watch Captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin (Lara Rossi), the naïve but heroic Carrot (Adam Hugill), the mysterious Angua (Marama Corlett), the ingenious non-binary forensics expert Cheery (Jo Eaton-Kent), the dictatorial Lord Vetinari (Anna Chancellor), and Pratchett’s iconic personification of Death voiced by Wendell Pierce.

BBC Studios is developing a TV adaptation of the Runestaff fantasy novels by Michael Moorcock. The Good Omens producer has secured the rights to four books in the series: The Jewel in the Skull, The Mad God’s Amulet, Sword of the Dawn and The Runestaff.
It is the latest high-profile fantasy adaptation for the production arm of the British public broadcaster after Deadline revealed that it was remaking The Watch, based on Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, for BBC America.
The books tell the story of a resistance force trying to bring down tyrannical rule and follow Hawkmoon, whose journey takes him from ghost-cities in the Syrian desert to pirate colonies in the American bayou; from caravans of mutant creatures in Carpathian mountains to the heart of the Dark Empire itself – the glittering city of Londra where the river runs blood red.

Broadchurch stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman have revealed that they nearly worked together on a comedy project 10 years before the ITV detective drama.
The duo were involved in a sitcom project that was written by a friend of Tennant, and the pair would have played husband and wife.
Tennant reveals information about the TV show in new commentaries on the Blu-ray release of Broadchurch, saying: "We'd done a reading of a sitcom that a friend of mine wrote. Had that gone ahead, we'd have been husband and wife.

Broadchurch producer Richard Stokes mocked the producers who turned down Tennant and Colman and pretends to be one of the creatives, joking: "Who are these people? They have no future."

Spoiler warning: this interview reveals the identity of the Broadchurch killer, and other series one plot details.
Years of keeping Doctor Who and Torchwood’s confidences must have been excellent preparation for the secrecy Chris Chibnall had to maintain throughout the run of his successful ITV drama, Broadchurch.
Part whodunit and part exploration of grief and loss, the David Tennant and Olivia Colman-starring series came to occupy a rare position in early 2013. Critics praised it, viewers watched it in their millions, and in its final weeks, online theories on the killer’s identity were just as widespread and meticulously constructed as anything you’d find in a Doctor Who comments section. Broadchurch fans united on Monday nights and poured reactions onto Twitter and Facebook during every ad break.

Broadchurch is the immensely popular, and some might say surprise, hit TV drama of the year so far with David Tennant and Olivia Colman in the starring roles against a backdrop of gorgeous Dorset scenery and a puzzling death of a young boy in a quiet seaside community.
Enter grizzled detective Di Alex Hardy (David Tennant) who seems to have unfortunately chosen Broadchurch as a quiet escape from a stain on his reputation and is teamed with local copper and friend of the dead boy’s family Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) who is determined to find the killer but equally keen to protect her friends in the community from the harsh manner and questions of her new colleague.

The final twist in the Broadchurch finale was the confirmation that the ITV drama will have a second series.
Broadchurch producer Richard Stokes hinted to fans of the show that there would be a major twist at the end of the episode - and his comments referred to the written text "Broadchurch will return", which appeared on screen after the end credits.
The murder case in the eight-part drama, which centred on the murder of schoolboy Danny Latimer, was all resolved by the end of the episode. The detectives in the case DS Miller (Olivia Colman) and Di Hardy (David Tennant) appeared to have retired from policework, so it's not clear which actors will be involved in the second run.
Broadchurch has been an overwhelming ratings hit for ITV, winning critical acclaim and generating huge publicity around the whodunnit mystery.
The show's writer Chris Chibnall said on Twitter this evening:...

BBC America has picked up "Broadchurch," an ensemble drama starring David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Vicky McClure and Arthur Darvill, for a 2013 release. The two try to solve the crime while attempting to hold off the press and preserve the tourist industry important to the town. "Broadchurch" will air in the network's Dramaville block. Four of the eight episodes were directed...

If you haven’t already picked up this box set, or have been catching the recent broadcast airings on BBC America, here’s a sneak peek of what you’re about to be able to get your hands on.
The Show
If you’ve been following along with my reviews (all of which you can find here), you’ll know that I’m a major Law & Order: UK supporter. It’s safe to say that I’ve enjoyed this adaptation more than any other installment in the franchise except for my undying love of the original series. Even if you’ve been disillusioned with the Law & Order brand over the past few years, you’d do well to give the British incarnation a chance.
