With fears our winter travel will need a, let’s say, reconsideration, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming could hardly come at a better moment. High on list of highlights is Louis Feuillade’s delightful Les Vampires, which I suggest soundtracking to Coil, instrumental Nine Inch Nails, and Jóhann Jóhannson’s Mandy score. Notable too is a Sundance ’92 retrospective running the gamut from Paul Schrader to Derek Jarman to Jean-Pierre Gorin, and I’m especially excited for their look at one of America’s greatest actors, Sterling Hayden.
Special notice to Criterion editions of The Killing, The Last Days of Disco, All About Eve, and The Asphalt Jungle, and programming of Ognjen Glavonić’s The Load, among the better debuts in recent years.

Plagiarism, if done willingly and poorly, generally does not go unnoticed and one cannot help but see certain similarities in various works be it literature, art, or cinema. In listening to the audio commentary with author Jonathan Rigby and director Alvin Rakoff on the new, limited edition Blu-ray of 1980’s Death Ship, a horror oddity about an abandoned old ship inhabited by the ghosts of members of the Third Reich(!), a remark is made that the poster for 2002's Ghost Ship was remarkably similar to the poster art for Death Ship, and it’s true that the similarities are uncanny. I can't help but wonder who came up with the idea for the poster for Ghost Ship, as Death Ship was well over twenty-five years-old and seemed to be relegated to the land of forgotten cinema.

Teresa Wright ca. 1945. Teresa Wright movies on TCM: 'The Little Foxes,' 'The Pride of the Yankees' Pretty, talented Teresa Wright made a relatively small number of movies: 28 in all, over the course of more than half a century. Most of her films have already been shown on Turner Classic Movies, so it's more than a little disappointing that TCM will not be presenting Teresa Wright rarities such as The Imperfect Lady and The Trouble with Women – two 1947 releases co-starring Ray Milland – on Aug. 4, '15, a "Summer Under the Stars" day dedicated to the only performer to date to have been shortlisted for Academy Awards for their first three film roles. TCM's Teresa Wright day would also have benefited from a presentation of The Search for Bridey Murphy (1956), an unusual entry – parapsychology, reincarnation – in the Wright movie canon and/or Roseland (1977), a little-remembered entry in James Ivory's canon.

Teresa Wright: Later years (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon.") Teresa Wright and Robert Anderson were divorced in 1978. They would remain friends in the ensuing years.[1] Wright spent most of the last decade of her life in Connecticut, making only sporadic public appearances. In 1998, she could be seen with her grandson, film producer Jonah Smith, at New York's Yankee Stadium, where she threw the ceremonial first pitch.[2] Wright also became involved in the Greater New York chapter of the Als Association. (The Pride of the Yankees subject, Lou Gehrig, died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1941.) The week she turned 82 in October 2000, Wright attended the 20th anniversary celebration of Somewhere in Time, where she posed for pictures with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. In March 2003, she was a guest at the 75th Academy Awards, in the segment showcasing Oscar-winning actors of the past. Two years later,...

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

Shirley Jones Movies: Innocent virgins and sex workers galore (photo: Shirley Jones and Burt Lancaster in ‘Elmer Gantry’) (See previous post: “Shirley Jones: From Book to Movies.”) I haven’t watched The Cheyenne Social Club (1970), a comedy Western directed by Gene Kelly, and starring 62-year-old James Stewart as a cowpoke who inherits an establishment that turns out to be a popular house of prostitution. Henry Fonda plays Stewart’s partner. And I’m sure Shirley Jones, as one of the sex workers, looks lovely in the film. Hopefully, director Kelly gave this likable, talented actress the chance to do more than just stand around looking pretty. But then again … For all purposes, The Cheyenne Social Club ended Shirley Jones’ film stardom; that same year she turned to TV and The Partridge Family. Jones would return to films only nine years later, as one of several stars (among them Michael Caine,...

The gray rolling seas thundered through the forest of pilings under the piers, sometimes cresting enough to send a geyser of wind-whipped froth up onto the decking. Other places, it poured through the gaps the wind and tide had eaten through the dunes and poured into the beach town streets. It pulled boats large and small from their moorings in the lagoon marinas and piled them like a child’s toys up on the land. Some in apartment buildings would tell of the cars in the ground level garage floating against each other bathtub playthings. But there was nothing childlike in the way it took entire houses, made seaside villages look like an extension of the ocean and not the land.

Jeep Australia has launched a new campaign for the Grand Cherokee, shot by award-winning director Germain McMicking on location in Melbourne, Chile, Patagonia and Argentina.
The campaign is the latest incarnation of the Grand Cherokee’s ‘The ultimate search engine’ positioning. The idea was developed by CumminsRoss, led by creative team Ed Howley and Toby Cummings.
There are two versions of the ad, ‘City’ and ‘Glacier’ each airing in 60 second and 30 second spots. Both feature footage of the natural landscape intercut with people in different moments of exploration. The same voiceover is used on both, and the car itself makes an appearance only in the final few seconds, before cutting to Jeep’s brand tagline ‘Don’t hold back’.
The soundtrack was composed by recent TropScore winner Ben Allen.

Andrew Stone has become the first contestant to be evicted from the 'Celebrity Big Brother' house. The 'Pineapple Dance Studios' star - who faced the public vote alongside Irish model Georgia Salpa after the pair landed the most nominations from their fellow housemates earlier this week - departed the series in a giant pumpkin pulled by two white horses in keeping with the show's Fairytale task. After facing a booing crowd, the eccentric dancer told Brian Dowling, host of the Channel 5 reality show, he expected to not be to everyone's taste because of his "Marmite" personality. He said: "It's pantomime isn't...

Doris Day may have been — once again — absurdly bypassed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, but at least she'll be getting some much deserved recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca). Day, 87, has been named the recipient of the L.A. Critics' Career Achievement Award of 2011 — or 2012, as the ceremony will take place early next year. (This year's winners will be announced on December 11.) The first Lafca award winners were announced in 1975. The annual Career Achievement Award was instituted the following year. Since then, a mere four women have been recognized for their contributions to the motion picture industry: actresses Barbara Stanwyck (1981) and Myrna Loy (1983), editor Dede Allen (1999), and now Doris Day. Male recipients — sometimes two per year — range from auteur John Cassavetes to comedian/auteur Jerry Lewis, from producer John Calley to silent-era pioneer Allan Dwan, from animator Chuck Jones to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Stop the presses and/or the tweets! Dorothy Malone is on tonight on Turner Classic Movies. TCM is showing six movies featuring Dorothy Malone, an actress who should have become a major movie star but inexplicably didn't. Malone had the right amount of talent, lips, ass, bosom, eyelashes, and Oscar (supporting, for Written on the Wind) — even so, she remained a (however popular) "leading lady." Check her out tonight. In this week’s shopping task, Bob Righter has come to life and the housemates must attempt to behave as unpredictably as possible.
If Housemates manage to avoid living out eight of Bob’s fifteen secret predictions then they will win a luxury budget for their remaining time in the house. However, If Bob successfully makes eight or more predictions the Housemates will fail this task.
Here are the results of the predictions:
Bob Righter’s Predictions
Andrew:

Challenged to impersonate the 24 character Jack Bower for 24 minutes, Andrew was given an earpiece through which the Tree would tell him a list of instructions to do and say – such as “dammit” and “sons of bitches”.

Challenged to impersonate the 24 character Jack Bower for 24 minutes, Andrew was given an earpiece through which the Tree would tell him a list of instructions to do and say – such as “dammit” and “sons of bitches”.
Check out the clip of Andrew screaming at the group below. We had to laugh at the moment Ben branded him ‘the Milky Bar kid gone mad!’

We can’t help but wonder if Big Brother’s Josie Gibson is getting a bit desperate, trying to attract the attention of Australian hunk John James Parton.
Last night the Bristol sales rep took her first topless shower in the house, wearing just a pair of skimpy yellow and pink bikini bottoms. She held an arm across her chest, trying to preserve some modesty, but it is certainly the most nakedness we’ve seen from her this series.
Yesterday the housemates took part in a Glee themed task, which saw them trying to learn a song and master a dance routine. Obviously Josie worked up quite a sweat with Andrew Stone and needed to cool down but we bet she was hoping that John James would join her!
