In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! Costume design is perhaps my favorite below-the-line Oscar category to analyze. That's partly because the craft itself is so integrally tied into the development of narrative, character and performance, but also because this voting branch can get so frisky with their choices. This year's field contains two former winners, two first-time nominees and one recurring bridesmaid, and it's an attractive collection -- ranging from rags to riches, from 19th-century England to 1970s New Jersey. It is, however, a field that demonstrates the Academy's overwhelming bias toward period work in this category -- it's nice when they find room for contemporary and/or fantasy work,...

The near future romance Her, written and directed by Spike Jonze, whose widely diverse resume ranges from the world of music videos to MTV’s Jackass to major motion pictures, brought together a creative team that costume designer Casey Storm refers to as “friends first, and co-workers second.” Storm and production designer K.K. Barrett create a soft, comfortable world of tomorrow. Shot on location around Los Angeles and Shanghai, Barrett avoided familiar locations to create a world that is accessible but not overtly recognisable.
Our first introduction to the world feels very familiar. Seated in an office in a simple button up, Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Theodore Twombly, dictates a letter to his computer as we see the words scrolled onto the screen. The lighting is soft and warm. The office furniture is a mix of lightwoods and pops of color in shapes and patterns that are reflective of the mid-century modern movement.

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

The Oscar voting deadline is today at 5 Pm Pst and if there are any Academy stragglers looking for help from the guilds they not only got the Directors Guild nominations yesterday, but the Cinematographers this morning and now the Costume Designers Guild have weighed in with their nominees in three categories -- Contemporary, Period and Fantasy Films. Obviously when it comes to Oscar predictions it's natural to lean toward period pieces and in this case it's interesting to see neither The Invisible Woman or The Book Thief among the nominees. I also wonder if Casey Storm can end up with an Oscar nomination with her near-future designs in Her, a film I didn't even have among my predictions (which, to be honest, were a little dusty they'd been so ignored), but have now moved into the top five. The sci-fi pants worn by the hero of Spike Jonze's Oscar-tipped romance form the centrepiece of a new fashion collection inspired by the film
They are destined to be the legwear of choice for the hipster cineaste in 2014: the high-waisted trousers worn by Joaquin Phoenix's character in the Oscar-tipped Spike Jonze drama Her have gone on sale to the public.
Dreamt up by costume designer Casey Storm, the striking pants are now available for $195 (£120) in Opening Ceremony stores in the Us.
They are part of Storm's Her collection, which also features other items of clothing from and inspired by the critically-acclaimed tale.

When it comes to Her, the movie-going public is a little like a kid ignoring his giant new Rc car to play with the cardboard box it came in. Here we are, with a film that asks so many questions that are so relevant to our own lives- questions about the ever-increasing influence of technology and its impact on our relationships- and all anyone cares about are the high-waisted pants. Don’t get me wrong, the high-waisted pants are great. I love the pants. And it does make sense that people would be falling over themselves to editorialize about Joaquin Phoenix‘s fashion choices instead of his digital romance. Not a soul in Her ever speaks aloud about men buckling their trousers above the bellybutton; the inclusion of the pants is both subtle and on the nose at the same time. So when those in the audience realize why the men of Her look so oddly futuristic...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

Turns out that red is not only the warmest color in Spike Jonze's Oscar-contending "Her," but that there was no room for blue in this cozy La of the near future. That's because the world building was retro rather than futuristic in exploring the conflict between emotion and environment, according to K.K. Barrett and Casey Storm, the director's longtime production designer and costume designer. Indeed, this warm and inviting world was central in developing the enchanting love story between Joaquin Phoenix and his Os (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). "In this case, environment and technology were there in providing comfort or in organizing your life and it's the human condition that gets explored," suggests Barrett. "One of the great things about Los Angeles is that you can spread out. It wasn't falling apart. It was easy to get around in. So it made a bit of a contrast. Life can...

Among the many things I liked about yesterday's Nbr champ "Her" is the sleek, subtle futurism of its design elements -- Casey Storm's costumes, in particular, are among my favorites of the year, and while I wouldn't expect the Academy to spring for them, I really hope the Guild takes notice of Storm's cleverly evolved silhouettes and punchy color palette. After all, it's the only film this year to inspire a range from a high-end fashion house: with Spike Jonze's collaboration, Opening Ceremony is introducing the technology-minded line this month. Spike Jonze's Her is absolutely wonderful. It's a film that questions our very existence, who we are as people, what defines us and the complexity or lack thereof of human relationships and bonding. What's truly amazing, is how simple Jonze makes it look, there are thematic layers to Her that could fill hours of discussion. One enlightened moment leads to another as the core pleasures we find in the company of others is stripped down to the very essence of humanity and what truly allows us to appreciate love and connect with someone else while also making a comment on our society on a whole. Set in the not-so-distant future, Her centers on Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a custom greeting card writer who's marriage has recently ended. Heartbroken, Theo is walking through life with blinders on. We're given glimpses of they joy he had with his wife (Rooney Mara...

Warner Bros. Pictures has moved the release date of Spike Jonze’s already much anticipated romantic drama “Her.” The film will now open in limited release in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto on December 18, 2013, and wide on January 10, 2014. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The move comes on the heels of strong positive reactions coming out of early screenings. “Her” has also just been announced by the New York Film Festival as its selection for the prestigious Closing Night Gala slot. The date change allows the studio to take full advantage of word of mouth resulting from the Festival screening, placing the film in the key awards consideration corridor and positioning it for its December opening and wider launch in January.
In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “Spike Jonze has created an unconventional love story that is thought-provoking and reflective of our modern age.

Award winners from the Cdg are in for a celebratory weekend. Monique Prudhomme’s sensational costumes for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus won in the ‘Excellence in Fantasy Film’ category, once again leaving fellow nominee, and all round big hitter, Avatar, out in the cold.
Other recipients at the 12th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards included Doug Hall for Crazy Heart in the ‘Contemporary’ section, eclipsing our prediction Marina Draghici for Precious, which is unfortunately off the Academy’s list on March 7th as well.
In television, Janie Bryant took the prize for her continually exciting work on Mad Men in ‘Period/Fantasy’. While ‘Mini-series’ saw Catherine Marie Thomas get the nod for Grey Gardens, an enthralling TV movie about the kooky aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis. Lou Eyrich for Glee received the Contemporary award, which is a real result as the costume character representation on that show is so precise.

Spike Jonze has worked with Absolut Vodka to launch his latest short film, "I'm Here", at the Sundance Film Festival. The 30 minute short film explores the relationship between two robots living in Los Angeles, played by Andrew Garfield and Sienna Guillory. "I'm here" was developed after Absolut reached out to Jonze to make a film, and gave him creative control to create the film he wanted. In addition to the 30-minute film, there are also 30 and 60 second trailers, to be used online and as TV commercials globally.
More about the film after the jump!
"It was a pretty incredible opportunity," says Jonze. "They (Absolut) didn't give me any requirements to make a movie that had anything to do with vodka. They just wanted me to make something that was important to me, and let my imagination take me wherever I wanted. And it wasn't like working with some huge corporation...

Below you will find exactly what my votes were for the 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards on VH1 this Friday night. I’m a member of the Bfca, and therefore an actual, honest to god, voting member for the awards. I have 1/235th of a voice in exactly what wins. This is simply over-analyzing (a rant) the numbers of how I exactly voted. Again, this is how I voted, not the final results of the show, which won’t be known until Friday.

The Oscars are a secret. You never see the ballot of Meryl Streep, George Clooney or James Cameron come awards time. I’m not a fan of that. I know they don’t want to admit they have favorites, but I do. I vote for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards as a member of the Bfca (Broadcast Film Critics Association). My ballot is below, and I think all critics should show what they consider the best, whether they vote in the Ofcs (Online Film Critics Society) or Cfca (Chicago Film Critics Society). The 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards airs on VH1 on Friday night.

I am shocked to report that my new membership did not singlehandedly or significantly increase their taste levels, he said sarcastically. A few of the following nominations are hard to justify qualitatively speaking but you can't always get what you want. Again Oscar punditry combined with 'I just unwrapped this gift' excitement seem to have replaced careful consideration of what the year had to offer. But then it does appear as if only about 15 movies truly existed this year. In fact six movies Inglourious Basterds, Nine, Avatar, Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, Precious and The Lovely Bones account for 48% of all the nominations. Crazy.
Am I just grumpy because they think The Lovely Bones (6 nominations) is better looking and The Blind Side (2 nominations) better acted than the exquisite Bright Star (1 nomination only)? I find those two judgment calls totally unsupportable. The abundant nominations for the garish and messy...

The World War II tale "Inglourious Basterds" and the Rome-set musical "Nine," both releases from the Weinstein Co., led the list of nominees for the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.'s 15th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, announced early Monday, with ten nominations each.
The 3-D sci-fi film "Avatar" followed close behind with nine noms, while "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air" received eight nominations each.
The awards, which will be handed out on Jan. 15 at ceremonies broadcast from the Hollywood Palladium by Vh-1, expanded this year from 17 to 25 categories, adding seven technical categories and separating its screenplay category into original and adapted slots.
Since the critics group also includes genre categories like best action movie and best comedy as well as awards for best acting ensemble and best young actor/actress, that opened the door for plenty of multiple nominations.

Where the Wild Things Are as a movie has been in production for about 4 years now and we’re finally getting close to the being able to see it on the big screen. It’s out 11th December and we here at HeyUGuys can’t wait to see it.
The guys over at Vbs.TV have just sent us a brand new featurette exclusive to their site which features an interview with author / illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak and director of the new movie, Spike Jonze.
In the clip, Sendak talks about how the book took a long time to be recognised as a piece of work that would capture kids’ imagination everywhere. He talks about the press he received being very bad but goes on to talk about how Jonze was the perfect man to take this project on as a movie. To Jonze, Sendak...

A unique Sundance Channel interview with costume designer Casey Storm — a man who has worked on films including Being John Malkovich, Zodiac and The Onion Movie — has revealed some interesting details regarding Where the Wild Things Are’s design and the process of director Spike Jonze.
Storm pretty much glows about Jonze, as would be expected (”He has an amazing ability to find people whom he admires and then ask them to do something they’ve never done before. He knows who gets his creative vision and will execute it perfectly”). The interesting details are in the specifics of Wild Things’ production:
“The biggest challenge was getting the wolf suit right. It’s tough when you have so much scrutiny on just one suit. How do you interpret a two-dimensional sketch? How do we get the details? We spent two months just taking snaps, playing with fabrics, etc. One of...

As Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are nears its October 16th release date, a whole bunch of neat behind-the-scenes videos and images are beginning to sneak online. Cinematical has received one of those videos, which follows production designer K.K. Barrett (Lost in Translation, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Marie Antoinette) as he discusses at length his career, his projects and the creative process behind Where the Wild Things Are.
This video, along with four others, are part of an ongoing series called "Art Talks" pieced together by Vbs.TV, who've created a pretty groovy looking Wild Things-themed website which you can check out over here.
