CBS’s “MacGyver” reboot will end with its currently airing fifth season, the network announced Wednesday.
“All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement. “The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves.”
The show’s final episode will be its Season 5 finale, airing Friday, April 30.
Launched in 2016, “MacGyver” is a reimagining of the classic series, starring Lucas Till as Angus “Mac” MacGyver, an agent for a clandestine organization within the U.

DC’s Stargirl TV series has seen its release date shift slightly…but not too much! Originally scheduled to premiere on Monday, May 11 on the DC Universe streaming service with a broadcast to follow on the CW on Tuesday, May 12, Stargirl will now arrive on DC Universe a week later, on Monday, May 18 instead, with the CW broadcast to follow on Tuesday, May 19th. The premiere date shift might reflect a need for The CW to fill holes in its schedule since the latter episodes of most of its heavy hitters like The Flash, Supernatural, Supergirl, Batwoman, and others have been temporarily delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
But the good news is that from that point forward it looks like the rest of the series is right on schedule, and DC Universe and The CW have confirmed air dates and revealed official details about the first five episodes!
Just a quick note,...

Blood Drive‘s titular race for years had been a subversive affair sneaked to lookie-loos via closed-circuit TV. But as the gauntlet gained a following, evil overlord Heart Enterprises stepped forward with a national broadcast and (gasp/ugh) “notes.”

In the tradition of classic grindhouse movies, Blood Drive (premiering June 14 at 10/9c on Syfy) is a new series soaked in high-octane chaos and just barely approved for television. After Los Angeles’ last good cop (Alan Ritchson) is forced to join a twisted cross-country death race, his only hope of survival is a dangerous femme fatale who has the need for speed (Christina Ochoa). Syfy and Universal have today announced they have greenlit Blood Drive, a high-octane, over-the-top scripted series in the classic grindhouse movie tradition. Set in a near-apocalyptic future, the 13-episode series centers around La’s last good cop who is forced to join a twisted, gory cross-country death race – with cars powered by blood (Blood Car anyone?) and a dangerous femme fatale partner who sees people as fuel. Sounds a lot like Blood Drive the video game (pictured above) – but apparently this is no relation.
Blood Drive is from executive producers John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening, The Shield) and David Straiton (Bates Motel, Hemlock Grove), who will also direct. Said Dave Howe, President, Syfy & Chiller:
This highly stylized roller coaster ride is a throwback to 1970s grindhouse cinema. With its fast-paced thrills and indie feel, Blood Drive will make an exciting and edgy addition to Syfy’s growing slate of original scripted series.

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 21, “Fire With Fire”
Written by Michael Narducci
Directed by David Straiton
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Klaus wreaks havoc on his family and friends, Dahlia brings a thunderstorm to Nola, Hayley and Jackson try to flee, Elijah and Rebekah use Freya to trap Dahlia, and Vincent helps Davina become regent of the city’s witch coven.
“Fire with Fire” is an immense improvement over last week’s lackluster episode, mainly because Klaus’s apparent regression/lack of character development is proven to be a ruse. While Klaus remains a frustratingly fickle and emotional character, “Fire with Fire” is proof not only that Klaus is capable of character growth, but also that the show’s writers have the intention of developing him further. Still, it’ll take a while before he stops being one of the weakest character links on The Originals,...

Hell on Wheels, Episode 5, Season 4, “Life’s a Mystery”
Written by Mark Richard and Thomas Brady
Directed by David Straiton
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“Wouldn’t be wise to kick a man while he’s down- he’s liable to kick back”
Last week’s episode of Hell on Wheels, “Reckoning”, was a slow and disappointing entry. There were great moments but given how exceptional the first three episodes of the season were, “Reckoning” left much to be desired. “Life’s a Mystery” is better but it’s also very heavy-handed and uneven.
This episode has an unusual structure with a campy and rather unnecessary opening set in Juarez, Mexico. While stylish, the whole thing feels out of place. Grit and realism have always been what’s made Hell on Wheels special, so this hyper and bloody opening, complete with slow motion, doesn’t feel like Hell on Wheels.

The series premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. scored impressive ratings: 12.1 million people tuned in to watch the premiere last Tuesday. Another 3.7 million watched it on DVR later in the week, and another 4.7 million watched the show’s repeat on Thursday evening. Add on another 1.6 million who streamed the pilot online (and who knows how many others pirated the episode), and we’re looking at a minimum of 22.1 million viewers (and climbing). Yet despite the ratings, the pilot was also met with a decidedly mixed reception from fans and critics alike.
I was pretty forgiving of the many misgivings the pilot offered. After all, pilots are rarely great, and Whedon has a track record for writing...

It took him a while to find out about it but David Straiton wants his money from the animated show he says he co-created and he wants to put his former business partner in front of a jury to get it. The journeyman TV director today filed a complaint (read it here) in La Superior Court over Johnny Test against Big Time Rush Ep Scott Fellows. Straiton, who has helmed episodes of House, Grimm, Netflix’s Hemlock Grove and the second episode of ABC’s upcoming Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.Ld., says that he and Fellows came up with the Johnny Test show idea back in 1995. They partnered on the concept and even tried unsuccessfully to pitch it to various networks and cable stations. Seems after that didn’t work out, Straiton dropped the project to move on to other things. Fellows, according to today’s complaint of constructive fraud,...

Season three of Hell on Wheels has been moving along steadily. It has been deliciously tense, powerfully acted, and full of exceptionally well put together stories. Cue Indiana Jones music. Or Da Vinci Code music. The choice is yours.
Yes, the Knights Templar are involved. Yes, the treasure is an instrument of unspeakable power. Yes, there are references to Mohammed. Yes, the cross and the nails which crucified Jesus to it might enter the equation somehow. If Renard wasn’t so pushed for time,...

Directed By: David Straiton
Original Airdate: 30 April 2013

A couple of men are riding ATVs on their farm one night. One of them, John, stops when he notices one of their cows is dead, its intestines spilling over the ground. The alien pushes John, impaling him on some wood before escaping. The alien is actually a Wesen named Vincent who is trying to deliver cow ovaries to his pregnant Wesen wife, Jocelyn. She is nursing a difficult pregnancy in a nearby barn.
Nick and Wu are called in on this case after John’s buddy reports an “alien attack” at the farm. At the same time, a UFO hunter overhears the call and heads to Portland.

Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on A&E
Bates Motel, which has now aired five episodes, tells the story of Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore), a smart but troubled17-year-old, and his over-controlling mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga).
In this week’s episode, “Ocean View,” Norma shows more of her bitchy side, Dylan finds himself caught in the middle of a shooting, and Norman and Emma find clues that lead to a major discovery. For an episode so jam-packed with twists and turns, the highlight, as always with Bates Motel, rests on the way Norma manipulates Norman’s adolescent feelings. Recalling the pilot, Norman tells his mother, “We’re like two peas in a pod, there’s a cord between our hearts and we share the same blood.” Not much as changed since, and their relationship becomes increasingly more toxic,...

Recalling the pilot, Norman tells his mother, “We’re like two peas in a pod, there’s a cord between our hearts and we share the same blood.” Not much as changed since, and their relationship becomes increasingly more toxic,...

“You never know when to give up.”-Captain Windmark There are many questions raised by this week’s episode of Fringe, but one looms larger than the rest. What took so long? I truly want to know where they’ve been hiding this episode and the people that made it. It was directed by David Straiton, a journeyman television director, whose most recent work on Fringe was last season’s Stephen King riff “Welcome to Westfield.” The writer was Alison Schapker, a veteran of eight Fringe episodes, including one of my personal favorites, “The Last Sam Weiss.” If tonight was any indication, the producers...

Fringe Episode 504
“The Bullet That Saved the World”
Written By: Alison Schapker
Directed By: David Straiton
Original Airdate: 26 October 2012
In This Episode...
Peter sneaks into town to siphon gasoline, and stops into a little curio shop to purchase a necklace for Etta, to replace the one she donated to the laser. While there, an Observer sneaks up on Peter and tries to read him. Peter does his best to scramble his thoughts, but an image of Etta slips past. Peter escapes through the sewers and returns to the lab. But the Observer isn’t done. He calls in Broyles to look at security footage and informs him that he thinks the resistance is protecting him.
Astrid and Walter have dug out the next video, but it is badly warped and nearly unintelligible. However, Walter is reminded of his childhood and concludes that the next clue is likely hidden beneath a platform at Penn Station.

Fringe Review, Season 5, Episode 4: “The Bullet That Saved the World”
Written by Alison Schapker
Directed by David Straiton
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
This week, on Fringe: Broyles returns, Walter loves Detective Comics, and Olivia gets her necklace back
With Fringe rocketing towards its series finale (only nine episodes left), something had to happen to kick what has been a solid but somewhat languidly paced season into a higher gear. That happens this week with the death of Etta. Fringe is no stranger to plot developments straight out of left field, but this is a particular surprise given what we know of the season so far as well as the show’s central themes of family and parenthood.
Writer Alison Schapker sets up the surprise by first establishing Etta’s necessity to the group. No one else is able to block the Observers’ scans, a weakness...

Grimm, Season 2, Episode 4: “Quill”
Written by David Simkins
Directed by David Straiton
Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on NBC (Fridays at 9pm Et starting 9/28)
This week on Grimm, a Wesen plague hits Portland, Monroe woos Rosalee the old-fashioned way, Hank finds his footing in Grimm lore, and The Families are sending yet another assassin after Nick.
The Yellow Plague we’re introduced to this episode seems to manifest first in pigs and then move into Wesen. First it raises the libido, then it presents like a mixture of the rumored “zombie virus” and hemorrhagic fever. It’s quite a nightmarish disease and the makeup and effects live up to the description. However, the show minimizes the threat by spreading it to no more than four plague victims and making it easily curable- hardly an outbreak of a plague that can wipe out entire villages. Most of the main plot...

Fringe Review, Season 4, Episode 12: “Welcome to Westfield”
Written by J. R. Orci and Graham Roland
Directed by David Straiton
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
This week, on Fringe: Olivia dreams, Peter progresses on The Machine, and Walter just has to have his rhubarb pie
As T.S. Eliot wrote, “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal… [and] make it into something better”. In its early episodes, many compared Fringe to The X-Files. It’s easy to see why- both share a mismatched duo with some will they/won’t they chemistry who investigate paranormal events. Eventually the series grew past this initial similarity, improving on its more X-Filesy elements and making them its own. This week, the show draws from a different landmark sci-fi series: The Twilight Zone. The premise is a simple one that could easily have been used for an episode of the classic series**- a...
