Of all the youth subcultures New Romantic is the most arbitrary. It began in the London night club Blitz in 1979. It was a predominantly gay club that played a mixture of electronic pop and disco. The attitude of the patrons was that unlike punk it was important that you did 'something'. Such as write poems, write songs or (because of the proximity of the pre-eminent Fashion College; St Martin's) design clothes. At some point in the year the theatrical costumier (who supplied all the theatres in London) Charles Fox had the crashdown sale of it's long history. Consequently that week Blitz patrons came dressed in a mix of retro styles that spanned a thousand years. Chain mail, doublet and hose, ruffs and uniforms loyal to every flag. In one night New Romantic was born.
Blitz had been Billys, it became Satellites and I believe by the late '80s was called Shroom.

Despite what you may have heard, the 1978 Doctor Strange TV movie is one of Marvel's better early TV efforts...
Marvel's 1978 Doctor Strange TV movie (officially known as Dr. Strange) is admittedly, something of an acquired taste, but there's an undeniable charm and air of mystery about it.
See related Joseph Kosinski on Tron 3 and The Black Hole remake
It's a deliberately paced origin story set in New York City that's light on action and long on exposition and sometimes questionable special effects. The eastern elements of Strange's origin are scrubbed in favour of Arthurian overtones with Morgan le Fay (Jessica Walter playing not necessarily the Marvel Comics version) as the villain and The Ancient One replaced by "Lindmer" a mentor who is, essentially, Merlin (wonderfully played by Sir John Mills). Clyde Kusatsu's Wong isn't a robed manservant, but an ally and student of the Ancient One,...

Nicola Tyson was born in 1960 in London, England. She attended Chelsea School of Art, St. Martins School of Art, and Central/St. Martins School of Art in London. She currently lives and works in New York.
Primarily known as a painter, Tyson also works with photography, film, performance, and the written word. Tyson's photographs document the early days of the Blitz Kids and the beginnings of the New Romantic movement -- late Seventies, post-Punk London. Bowie Nights at Billy's Club was a weekly event in a small Soho venue, the brainchild of a young Steve Strange and Rusty Egan. The event quickly became the beating heart of a brand-new scene -- a refuge for disillusioned punks; suburban art school students; androgynous, subversive, creative kids; and (most importantly) Bowie fans, all competing for conspicuousness. Among them were the future stars of Eighties synth-pop: Boy George, Marilyn, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran,...

[Editor's Note: The Fyc series brings together all Film Experience contributors to highlight our favorite fringe Oscar contenders. Here's Glenn Dunks on Xavier Dolan's latest]
Anybody who knows me knows I have been trumpeting Xavier Dolan’s trans epic Laurence Anyways since I saw it back in January. I experienced a lot of emotions during this gloriously decadent and painfully intimate affair on the big screen (as one should expect from a three-hour movie). Yet what caught me most off guard was the romanticism with which it painted images through costume. Oh sure, Dolan’s previous films had a way with the fashions – the suburban chic duds of I Killed My Mother and the hipster vintage of Heartbeats - but never had their colours felt so radical, their intent so cutting, their stories so vivid.
So many of my lasting memories of Laurence Anyways rotate around the clothes. In fact, the first thing we see of our lead character are the clothes. There’s the symbolic baby blue business attire with hot pink accentuated shoulders in the opening scene.

Watching Xavier Dolan’s nearly three-hour long Laurence Anyways is like being enveloped in a grand 500-page novel written by a master in the making. There are frequent moments of genius where you are rendered blissfully immobile by the onscreen carryings-on; uncountable witticisms you wish you yourself had dashed off; unbridled passions that hit the heavens and then bounce back harrowingly; several paeans to those filmmakers who’ve inspired him (e.g. Ken Russell); and now and then a slight unwieldiness that’s easy to sidestep.
At 24, Montrealer Dolan, a former child actor, has now directed three acclaimed films with a fourth on the way (Tom a la ferme). His first, the deliciously comic yet lyrical I Killed My Mother (2009), dealt with a substantially high-strung gay teen’s love/hate relationship with his mom. Mostly hate. Heartbeats (2010) chronicled the friendship of a gay man and his best gal pal, and...

Steve Strange has admitted that he has attended meetings about possibly entering the Celebrity Big Brother house this year.
It had previously been reported that the former 80′s popstar would be joining the lineup of the reality TV show when it launches on Channel 5 later this month.
Speaking to Wales Online about the rumours the Visage frontman confessed that he has held meetings with Bb executives and the last he heard, he had made their final 20 shortlist.
Strange – real name Steven John Harrington – said:
“Admittedly, I have had meetings. The last my agent heard was I was down to [the final] 20.”
The former drug addict also admitted that he has been ‘overwhelmed’ by the amount of support from his fans, who have been pressuring Channel 5 and Endemol bosses to add him to their lineup.
he continued:
“People have been literally bombarding Channel 5 and Endemol saying: ‘If you don’t stick Steve into the house,...

We can’t imagine why Channel 5 would have booked Jedward for Celebrity Big Brother, as they are refusing to bring any sex or titillation to the reality TV series.
The famous twins have not yet been confirmed as housemates on the upcoming series of the show – which launches on Channel 5 later this month – however, speaking about how they would behave if they did take part, the siblings told Metro that their own brand of fun would be ‘all PG’ and suitable for family viewing.
Edward (we have no idea which one he is!) told the newspaper:
‘We’d love to do Celebrity Big Brother if we were asked to do it, it would be amazing because we’d do so much cool things.’
‘We’d make it all PG. We’d tell everybody to stop trying to get together with each other. We’d tell everybody to stop drinking and...

If even half of the rumours are true about this year’s Celebrity Big Brother series, then viewers really are in for a treat.
Insiders claim that Channel 5 are going all out to get some big named stars in the house and the latest celeb to be linked to the reality TV show is troubled actor Charlie Sheen.
Charlie hit the headlines recently, after he was sacked from his £1.2 million per episode job on American comedy ‘Two and a Half Men’, after he was constantly featured in tabloids and magazines who reported on his liaisons with porn stars and alcohol and cocaine binges.
It has been claimed that Five and Endemol have now offered Sheen a whopping £6 million to join Big Brother, when it re-launches on the 17th of August.
The Daily Star reports that Charlie has already agreed the deal in principle and that bosses offered him such a large sum,...

Sarah Ferguson has been the latest star linked to this year’s Celebrity Big brother series.
The Duchess Of York is rumoured to be considering a stint on the reality TV show, in a bid to pull her out of her current financial crisis.
The former Princess – who was married to Prince Andrew, Duke of York from 1986 to 1996 – was exposed by The News of the World last year, as having been accepting large sums of money in exchange for an introduction to her former husband, the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment at the time.
“They are offering big appearance fees this year to try and draft in some massive names,” a source told the Metro.
Fergie isn’t adverse to the odd TV appearance.
Over the years she has showed up on Loose Women, Friends, The Vicar Of Dibley, and the Us Celebrity Apprentice.

John and Edward Grimes have seemingly denied rumours that they are about to enter the famous Big brother house.
It had been reported and some say confirmed by Louis Walsh that the former X Factor contestants had penned a deal worth £1 million, that would see them joining the lineup for the reality TV show, when it launches on Channel 5 next month.
However, in a new interview, Jedward have insinuated that half a million pounds each is not enough to make them want to star in the month long series, making us wish we had their lives and their bank balances!
John said: “There are always rumours that we’re going in. Rumours are called rumours because they’re not always true. Going on ‘Big Brother’ would be the craziest thing ever.
“I don’t think £1 million’s enough, I think it’s below estimate.”
Edward added: “I think ‘Big Brother...

It’s finally sunny here in London! The mercury is on its way to 28 (centigrade of course) and I’m sitting in my garden, listening to soon-to-be-defunct BBC Radio 6 music (which makes me sad). But fear not – there were enough cold hours for me to sit in front of the telly and bring you news of what the devil’s been going on in Britain.

The documentary featured Gareth’s coming out party attended by Dr. Christian Jessen of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies, and singer Will Young, presenting partners Colin and Justin. Please note, I feel very resentful of that as I didn’t have a comin gout party.

Boy George's story is coming to the small screen - the BBC is turning the Culture Club frontman's colorful life into a TV drama. The one-off special will revisit the singer's career from club cloakroom attendant to 1980s gender-bending icon.
Two supporting cast members have already signed up for the project, "Worried About the Boy" - British actor Mat Horne will play Culture Club drummer Jon Moss, an alleged former lover of the singer - real name George O'Dowd, while Green Street Hooligans star Marc Warren will take on the role of scene trend setter Steve Strange.
The drama will chronicle the early days of Culture Club, who went on to sell 22 million albums worldwide, O'Dowd's addiction to heroin and his prison spell in 2009 when he was put behind bars for assault and false imprisonment of a male prostitute.
