David Duchovny will star opposite Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette in Spyglass Entertainment's music-driven Connie and Carla. Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause 2) is directing the project, which is aimed to begin production the first week of May. The project is described as Some Like It Hot meets Tootsie. The female buddy comedy is about two working-class dinner-theater singers (Vardalos and Collette) who are forced to go undercover in Los Angeles as drag queens. Duchovny plays Jeff, who, while searching for his drag-queen brother in West Hollywood, falls for Vardalos' character. Spyglass toppers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum are producing with production president Jonathan Glickman. Vardalos is executive producing. The company, which brings its own financing to the table and funds its own development, also is handling international distribution rights. Universal Pictures is distributing the project domestically. Universal production president Mary Parent and senior vp production Donna Langley are overseeing, as is Spyglass production vp Stephanie Striegel. Duchovny is repped by CAA and Melanie Greene Management.
Spyglass Entertainment has picked up Aline Brosh McKenna's pitch 27 Dresses for Outlaw Prods. to produce. The project marks the fifth collaboration between Brosh McKenna and Outlaw. The scribe wrote the company's Warner Bros. Pictures feature Three to Tango and rewrote the upcoming Jennifer Love Hewitt starrer If Only for Intermedia Films. She also worked on Outlaw's Season in Central Park and The Official Scorer, both in development at Warners. Dresses is about a woman fed up with always being a bridesmaid. Spyglass' Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum are producing with Outlaw's Robert Newmyer, Jeffrey Silver and Scott Strauss. Spyglass' Jonathan Glickman is executive producing, with company executive Stephanie Striegel overseeing. Brosh McKenna is repped by Devra Lieb at Hohman Maybank Lieb.
