Originally trained to be a landscape architect.
Best remembered for "Three Wise Fools" and "Seventh Heaven".
Was a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Saturday Review of Literature and Readers Digest.
In 1934 he resigned from the Pulitzer Prize drama jury over restrictions on who could be considered for the prize.
Served as vice president of the National Institute of Art and Letters and on the executive committee of the Stage Relief Fund.
