The UK version of The Traitors series 2 resists reality TV stars and keeps the format familiar: and it’s sticking to its guns.
I can’t say I’m an avid follower of reality television programmes as they stand at the moment. I remember devouring early series of Big Brother and The Apprentice, when they were very much in their infancy. Yet over time, the contestants became more knowing of what they were getting into, the shows heightened things and became crueller, and watching something like The Apprentice now, it feels like it’s more about Alan Sugar’s ego and humiliating people through editing rather than an interesting show.
It’s why The Traitors – the UK version – was such a breath of fresh air at the end of 2022.
Here was a brand new format (to the UK at least) that basically played with a murder mystery-style format, where it...

It’s Friday, aka Insider Day. Jesse Whittock back again to run you through the international film and TV stories dominating the headlines this week.
BBC’s Social Media Guide
Steadying the flagship: Easily one of the BBC’s biggest ongoing headaches is around how the broadcaster’s most popular stars and presenters engage on social media platforms. The issue blasted back into life earlier this year when Match of the Day presenter and Twitter/X fanatic Gary Lineker tweeted to liken the language used by the British government around its asylum seeker policy to that of Germany in the 1930s and was temporarily suspended by the BBC. After an outcry over the suspension, which included many of Lineker’s colleagues stopping work in solidarity, he was reinstated and the BBC plunged into an existential crisis over how it remains impartial while allowing freedom of expression to its biggest stars.

Star BBC presenters such as Gary Lineker should avoid overt “political campaigning,” according to new rules recommended in an independent report for the UK’s public broadcaster.
As we tipped yesterday, the results of former ITN boss John Hardie’s report into how BBC presenters, stars and journalists should use social media have been unveiled today.
Among the key recommendations are a set of guidelines for “flagship-brand presenters” such as Match of the Day host Lineker and The Apprentice‘s Alan Sugar. Those included would come from “an evolving list at its discretion by the BBC” and would be expected to pay “particular responsibility to respect the BBC’s impartiality” due to their profiles.
While presenters should be allowed to enjoy freedom of expression on social media, they should not be involved in “party political campaigning, support for or attacks on political parties, individual politicians, governments or activist organisations,” the report states.

Exclusive: The BBC is preparing to set out new rules that will govern what its biggest stars can post on social media after a debacle over a Gary Lineker tweet earlier this year.
BBC insiders said the results of an independent review by former ITN CEO John Hardie could be published as early as Thursday. The BBC declined to comment on the timing of an announcement but did not deny that it was imminent.
It is not clear if the BBC will publish Hardie’s findings in full alongside changes to social media guidance. The last time the BBC ordered a social media review in 2020, the broadcaster did not make public the conclusions of Richard Sambrook, a former BBC News executive.
Hardie was drafted in to clarify how the BBC’s social media rules should apply to freelance presenters as the broadcaster attempts to uphold strict standards on impartiality. BBC...

No Spaced. No The League of Gentlemen. No Smack the Pony or Goodness Gracious Me or The Royle Family or Brass Eye, or Red Dwarf or Father Ted or anything that belongs to the last century (side note: the late 90s were an incredible time for UK comedy). These are the 40 finest British comedy TV shows that have arrived since the year 2000, as nominated by our writers. Add in your favourites below, and it’s a party.
What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. There’s the surreal chaos of Year of the Rabbit, and the sweet warmth of Lovesick, the Pythonesque bonkersness of Yonderland, the satirical might of The Thick of It and much more. Something for everyone, you might say.

The Hunt for Raoul Moat has reignited public interest in Britain’s biggest manhunt – and Paul Gascoigne’s bizarre involvement in the case.
ITV’s newest true crime drama focuses on the July 2010 hunt by Northumbria Police for Moat, a former bouncer and bodybuilder who shot three people – his ex-girlfriend, her new partner, and a police officer – two days after he was released from Durham Prison.
What followed was a week-long manhunt, involving 160 armed officers (10 per cent of those available in England and Wales at any one time). Sniper teams, helicopters and TV survival expert Ray Mears were also involved in the search. Read the full true story here.
On 9 July, Moat was tracked to a National Trust estate near Rothbury, Northumberland, with police surrounding him while he held a gun to his neck. In an attempt to make him surrender, food and water were reportedly offered to Moat, while...

Soon after the post was shared, the police confirmed it was in contact with Bell and that he was safe.

Allegations against Bell were made by a then 19-year-old woman, who reported the actor to police in 2018, accusing him of grooming her since she was 12.

Jake Gyllenhaal has spoken about the creative process of working with British director Guy Ritchie that forced him to “let go”.
Gyllenhaal stars as a US army sergeant in Ritchie’s latest film, The Covenant, in which he and an Afghan interpreter take on Taliban forces.
During a new interview on the popular YouTube show Hot Ones, the actor was asked whether it was “daunting” or “liberating” working with a director who gives actors “a lot of space to explore”.
“The thing that I love about my job is that you get to work with so many different minds,” Gyllenhaal responded.
“With Guy, it was like nothing I’d ever done. He said to me, ‘Don’t memorise any of your lines,’ and the script came in at 50 pages. It wasn’t even a fully written script.”
He continued: “Usually, scripts are like 110 pages, and I was like, ‘What is this?...

Angela Bassett has shared insight into the bond she forged with Austin Butler during the 2023 film awards season.
Both Bassett and Butler were in contention for major accolades in recent months, with both taking home Golden Globes for their performances in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Elvis, respectively.
While repeatedly attending the same ceremonies as one another, the actors connected over their similar experiences.
When Butler didn’t win the Academy Award for Best Actor, Bassett was seen comforting him, having missed out on the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress herself earlier that evening.
To mark Butler being named as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2023 on Thursday (13 April), Bassett supplied some words about her new friend.
“The first time I met Austin Butler, we were both starting to find our grooves in what promised to be a busy awards season,” she wrote. “We connected in a fleeting moment,...

Nicholas Hoult has shared some insight into his adolescence, claiming that it was less like the teenage antics depicted in Skins than people might assume.
The actor played Tony Stonem, a popular sixth-form student with a large group of friends and several romantic suitors, in seasons one and two of the teen drama.
Airing for seven seasons between 2007 to 2013, Skins was considered groundbreaking for its explicit and dark depictions of young people’s lives, covering topics such as mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse and suicide.
However, in a new interview on Hits Radio Breakfast, Hoult claimed that his younger years weren’t nearly as dramatic as those of his character.
“My life was more Inbetweeners,” he told show host Tom Green, adding: “Watching that I was like, this I can relate to in many ways more.”

Former pop musician Kauan Okamoto has alleged that he was sexually abused by famed Japanese music producer Johnny Kitagawa.
Kitagawa, who died in 2019, was previously accused of abuse by a number of others, the details of which formed the basis of a BBC documentary in March.
According to Okamoto, he had been abused by Kitagawa up to 20 times between 2012 and 2016, from the age of 15, when he was the member of a boy band (per BBC News).
The Japanese-Brazillian musician also alleged that as many as 100 boys could have been abused by Kitagawa.
During his life, Kitagawa denied all allegations and never faced criminal charges.
Okamoto, now 26, released a statement detailing his claims after watching Predator: The Secret Scandal of J-Pop on the BBC. In the documentary, it is claimed that multiple alleged victims told the broadcaster that they feared career reprisals if they didn’t go along with Kitagawa’s advances.

US President Joe Biden said he would boast to his daughter about having his photo taken with James Martin, one of the stars of the Oscar-winning short film An Irish Goodbye.
The film, which won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film at the ceremony last month, is a black comedy set on a rural farm in Glenmornan, a small hamlet in the west of County Tyrone in Northern Ireland.
It follows the reunion of estranged brothers Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) and Lorcan (Martin) after the death of their mother.
Biden pointed out James Martin in the crowd as he spoke this week at Ulster University in Belfast, during a visit to the country for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.
Martin, who is from Belfast and has worked as a barista in the city, stood and bowed, while receiving applause from the audience led by the president.

News of a new 10-year Harry Potter TV series has drawn a mixed reaction from fans of the franchise.
The project, announced by Warner Bros on Wednesday (12 April), will be released on the streaming service Max, currently branded as HBO Max.
According to Warner Bros, the series will be a “faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer Jk Rowling”.
However, while the new series is billed as a departure from the hit film adaptations, with a whole new cast, fans noticed that the announcement seemed to draw heavily from the look – and sound – of the movies.
In an announcement video, the Harry Potter title could be seen written in the exact same font as the film, while Hogwarts school also appeared with the same design as the film.

Priscilla Presley has stated that there is “no feud” between her and Riley Keough following the death of Lisa Marie Presley.
Lisa Marie, the only daughter of Priscilla and Elvis Presley, died in January aged 54 after suffering cardiac arrest.
Weeks after her death, Priscilla made a challenge to the “authenticity and validity” of Lisa Marie’s will, citing an unusual signature and other allegedly inconsistent details.
Further reports have suggested that Priscilla is no longer speaking to her granddaughter and Lisa Marie’s daughter, actor Keough, due to the legal dispute.
However, Priscilla has now shut down rumours of a “feud” between the family members.
Speaking in Newcastle as part of her An Evening with Priscilla Presley tour, the 77-year-old was asked if she was still in contact with her granddaughter.
“We are just fine,” she insisted.
Priscilla’s legal challenge concerns a 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie’s living trust.

A former contestant on The Apprentice has claimed that Lord Alan Sugar once “went ballistic” for no reason, before he walked off set for 25 minutes.
The story comes from Mark Wright, who won the 2014 edition of the BBC reality series, and went on to partner with Sugar in a joint business venture.
Speaking on the On a Mission podcast, Wright recalled the alleged incident, which took place while filming one of the “boardroom” showdown scenes.
“One day out of the blue [Sugar] just went ballistic for no reason,” Wright said, per The Mirror. “He just went completely psycho, and he walked out of the boardroom and left everyone in there – the film crew, production, Karen and Nick and all the contestants and left us there for 25 minutes.
“He just did a psycho rant and left the room and then he came back in, and I was like ‘that was magic,’ he...

And so we conclude the thrilling story of Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre, Guy Ritchie’s return to stylish spy capers with reliable main man, Jason Statham in tow. A sharp, witty and colourful actioner about a top secret agent trying to foil a billion dollar weapons sale between an arms dealer and a set of dastardly Ukrainian Mercenaries. Which would have released last year had Russia not invaded the Ukraine and the country’s population subsequently revealed themselves to be proud defenders of their homeland, holding the line against a vastly better equipped foe. Suddenly casting them as the villains in anything would feel grossly distasteful as well as at-odds with the reality of their national character. So Operation Fortune got shelved for a year, then quietly shunted onto Amazon Prime today.
Finally watching the film is a bizarre experience, the Ukrainian villains, like everything in the film,...

Sam Neill has recalled the time he and the Jurassic Park crew almost died on set.
Neill, 75, starred in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster hit, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, alongside Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern.
Writing in his recently released memoir Did I Ever Tell You This?, the actor reflected on a particularly dangerous day on set for the dinosaur film.
“We almost died in the first few weeks where we were filming on Kauai in the Hawaiian archipelago,” he writes (via People Magazine).
He continued: “One morning we were told to stay back at the hotel and expect a hurricane later in the day. I was down on the beach with Laura Dern, who asked me: ‘Sam, do you think we might die today?’
“As these massive black clouds approached over the Pacific I found I had to tell her that in all honesty the answer was,...

Gordon Ramsay has hit out at Alan Sugar amid the stars’ ongoing row.
In 2022, the celebrity chef launched a BBC One show titled Gordon Ramsay’s Future Food Stars.
The news was met with criticism from Sugar, who called the series a “virtual rip-off” of his own BBC show The Apprentice.
In a new interview with The Sun, Ramsay urged Sugar to stop “b***ing” and talking “absolute bollocks”.
“He has no right to start throwing his toys out the pram,” said the Kitchen Nightmares star. “Do you think Simon Cowell started complaining about The Voice when he was running The X Factor? Of course he didn’t.”
He continued: “There is more than enough room for both shows on the BBC. Come on Alan! Share the f***ing love!”
Ramsay added that some of The Apprentice contestants are “dying to come on” his show.

The Apprentice has defended itself from viewer complaints that its latest episode was too “nasty”.
On Thursday (16 March), the reality series aired its penultimate episode, which shows the final five candidates receive a grilling from Lord Sugar’s trusty aides, including Claude Littner and Linda Plant.
However, viewers have complained that the episode, which is usually a fan favourite, was particularly harsh this year, with many saying they felt the contestants were being “bullied” by the interviewers.
However, a spokesperson for the series said in response: “The interviews round is more than just a normal interview. Its purpose is to help determine whose business plan has the potential to secure the £250k investment.
“As such, every detail must be thoroughly scrutinised and advisors will at times need to ask difficult questions. The stakes are high for candidates and emotions do run high as they want to secure a place in the final.

The Apprentice has angered viewers with its latest round of dreaded interviews.
Every series, the penultimate episode shows the final five candidates receive a grilling from Lord Sugar’s trusty aides, including Claude Littner and Linda Plant.
By the end of the episode, the candidates had been whittled down to just two.
This particular episode has regularly been considered a fan favourite among viewers – but viewers have complained that this year’s edition was far too harsh.
Joining Littner and Plant were Mike Souter and Baroness Karren Brady, who sits alongside Sugar in the boardroom.
Brady found herself at the centre of one of the episode’s most brutal moments. As Megan Hornby left her interview, which went dreadfully, she referred to Brady by her first name, to which Brady responded: “It’s Baroness Brady to you. My friends call me Karren.”
She also reduced two of the candidates to tears,...

Exclusive: The BBC failed to fully heed advice in 2020 that could have helped the broadcaster avoid a weekend of carnage over a single tweet from Gary Lineker, its highest-paid presenter.
A review of the BBC’s social media guidelines three years ago recommended that it specifically examine rules for freelance presenters such as Lineker, who hosts the popular Premier League highlights program Match of the Day.
The revelation is likely to raise further questions about BBC Director-General Tim Davie’s handling of the Lineker saga, given he admitted today that there are “grey areas” in its guidance for freelancers. Lineker earns £1.35M ($1.62M) a year from the BBC in addition to other work, including running WME-backed podcast producer Goalhanger.
Richard Sambrook, a former BBC News executive and emeritus professor of journalism at Cardiff University, was engaged in 2020 to help draw up new social media rules for BBC journalists.

Gary Lineker has been a major topic of discussion for days, following his tweet in response to Suella Braverman’s immigration bill.
Last week, the government announced a new policy to halt small boat crossings. It will result in the deportation of asylum seekers who arrive via boat to Rwanda or another “safe third country” without hearing their asylum claim.
Reacting to the news, Lineker expressed his distaste for the decision and responded to someone who pushed back on his view on Twitter.
He wrote: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
After questions were raised about whether the football pundit had broken BBC’s impartiality rules with his social media use,...
