Even though 91-year-old troubadour Ramblin’ Jack Elliott didn’t feel like getting out of bed this morning, there was a gig to play. Another chance to dust off his cowboy hat, grab the guitar case, and make it to the show on time.
“I didn’t know if I could play at all this morning. I spent the whole day in bed,” Elliott tells Rolling Stone backstage after at a sold-out gig at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, North Carolina, earlier this month. “But it’s the enthusiasm, all these...

This weekend marks the 100th birthday of cinema's first cartoon superstar. On November 9, 1919, Paramount released Feline Follies, produced by Pat Sullivan and animated by Otto Mesmer, a short gag-driven cartoon starring a black cat named Master Tom; the character was an immediate hit and by the time the third cartoon featuring the character came out five weeks later (they worked fast back in those days), he'd been renamed Felix. The rest is history: Felix the Cat was a bonafide phenomenon, igniting a craze for funny, mutable animals that hasn't let up at any point in the last century. Even Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, the cinematic icon to end all icons, was initially conceived as a blatant Felix knock-off swapping out the cat's pointy ears for circles that were easier to draw.
You might not guess that to watch Feline Follies, which feels like an artifact from a lost civilization.

It’s the most exciting time of year for NBA fans around the world – the dawn of the Playoffs. The sixteen best teams in the league are all set to fight it out to decide this year’s NBA Champions, testing their skill, intelligence, physical durability, and heart.
Despite its status as one of the purest team sports in the world, basketball is a game upon which the most talented players can exert their will time and time again. Never is this more clear than in the playoffs. While some championship-winning teams possess both fantastic chemistry and sparks of individual brilliance, often one must be sacrificed for the other. In such cases, teams featuring one game-changing superstar will trump a selfless collective of underdogs more often than not (flying in the face of inspirational sports movies everywhere).
This season, that message could prove to ring especially true.

Sometimes, the fight gods just aren’t on your side, and luck turns sour. That pretty much sums up 2014 as a whole when it comes to the injury bug.
Injuries have been the bane of the Ufc in 2014. They’re a huge part of why profits are down an astounding forty percent. They have lead to main events falling through, fan favourites being out for extended periods, and even an event being cancelled.
It’s hard to avoid injuries in the fight game, but clearly something has to be done. Fewer events, changes in training practices for fighters, a crackdown on weight cutting (which has resulted in injuries in some cases) – it’s a difficult situation, but one that the Ufc must confront sooner rather than later, especially in an era where there are more events than ever before, but fewer and fewer stars to headline them.

Shirley Clarke’s final feature film emulates the free form style of its subject, legendary jazz musician Ornette Coleman, playfully editing fragments of live performances, interviews and fictionalized visions of the saxophonist’s upbringing with the fervent energy of early MTV music videos. The result is a sort of telegenic collage that allows Ornette to age and mature in stature over the course of decades through performative observation and on screen accolades from colleagues and critics alike. Yet, Coleman’s career has continued to grow and flourish since the release of Ornette: Made in America back in 1985, having even been awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for music for his record Sound Grammar.
From the opening of the film Ornette’s seen being honored, in this case by the mayor of his hometown, Fort Worth, Texas, with a key to the city. It’s a recurring theme. Though at first misunderstood in his local musical community,...

Jimmy Fallon's return to "Saturday Night Live" -- this time as a host, instead of a cast member -- was a nostalgia-fest of epic proportions. Of course, Fallon is a beloved part of "SNL" history, but perhaps the best testament to his legacy on the show is just how many of his former co-stars were willing to return to work with him again.
Aside from the Pat Sullivan cold open which featured Rachel Dratch and Amy Poehler, Fallon was also joined by Horatio Sanz, Chris Kattan, and Tracy Morgan for a rendition of "I Wish It Was Christmas Today."
Our favorite part of the evening, however, was the "Weekend Update" Joke-Off, in which former "Weekend Update" partners in crime battled for the crown. Yes, Tina Fey returned to the desk with her old pal Fallon, and Poehler and Seth Meyers reunited for a series of jokes about a strip...

When Jimmy Fallon was announced as the mid-season finale host of "Saturday Night Live," we have to admit we had our fingers crossed that some of his former cast mates would stop by to keep him company as he returned to the 30 Rock stages.
And they did!
The cold open for Saturday night's show featured Fallon's almost-iconic character (give him a few years) Pat Sullivan, the South Boston high school student who we accompanied on many a field trip back in the day. Of course, time has passed. Pat and his girlfriend, Denise/Zazoo -- yes, Rachel Dratch returned, folks! -- and their ever-present camera man Tommy had some trouble sneaking in to the high school reunion.
Even Amy Poehler stopped by, playing a former classmate who had left high school because of a serious case of mononucleosis. (Fyi, that "mono" turned 15 this year.)
Part of the appeal of "SNL...

It's fitting that Jimmy Fallon would return to Saturday Night Live to host a Christmas episode, and also fitting that he was joined by fellow alum Rachel Dratch to reprise his Pat Sullivan character, with Dratch playing his girlfriend Denise. They were trying to crash their old high school's winter formal, which was difficult as their student IDs put Fallon at fourteen and Dratch at...whatever age you have to be to work as an assistant high school principal.

I tried watching Chuck for two seasons. It seemed tailor made for me. But it could really only hold my attention when Captain Awesome was onscreen. Now Ryan McPartlin is going to guest on Hot In Cleveland, and he's there for Susan Lucci to presumably get her cougar on. I hope they skimp on the wardrobe.
Mark Burnett is going to give sugar-coated anti-gay asshat preacher Joel Osteen a reality show. Osteen will drop into a community each episode and set up an event, like a soldier's homecoming. Great PR for him to keep condemning us.
The Grammy nominations were announced in a concert last night on CBS, but offscreen local favorites like Glee scored nominations. It does look to be Adele's year though.
With the plot details for Akira leaking, the casting may make more sense. Now if someone could just make changing the setting make sense.

In an unsurprising outcome, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner. Newton has put up absolutely sick numbers for the Tigers this year -- in 2010, he passed for almost 2600 yards and threw 28 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions. But that's not all. He also rushed for 1400 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also had one receiving touchdown when wide receiver Kody Burns passed to Newton for a Td against Ole Miss. You know, 'cause he just hadn't done enough.
Newton said in his acceptance speech: "I would like to thank my beautiful mother Jackie Newton and my father ... [chokes up] thank you ... My parents do a lot of things behind the scenes that go unnoticed ... thank you for everything that you do for me and my family ... I also want to thank my coaches, my players ... I'd also like to thank the troops over seas that are fighting for our freedom every...
