Jeff Beck played his first gigs on a guitar he built himself, plugging in with local bands in the London suburbs from age 13, before honing his craft at Wimbledon School of Art, studying the artistry of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Beck mixed the virtuosity and speed Les Paul displayed on radio broadcasts, and the heaviness of even the most melodic Gene Vincent records into his own sound. Beck transformed The Yardbirds from blues purists to proto psychedelia pioneers before inventing hard rock on The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 Truth album. A new Jeff Beck Group came out with Rough and Ready, infusing fluid jazz phrasings onto R&b ensemble rhythms.
It’s been said Pink Floyd considered asking Beck to join after Syd Barrett left. Beck turned down an invitation to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones for a project with Vanilla Fudge bassist and vocalist Tim Bogert,...

Jeff Beck, the blues-rock innovator and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who revolutionized how the guitar is played, died Tuesday at the age of 78.
Beck’s family confirmed the former Yardbirds guitarist’s death Wednesday. “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing,” Beck’s family said in a statement. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

The first time I ever saw The Horrors, frontman Faris Badwan threw garbage at me. It was an apt metaphor for what the band was doing in those days: Early singles like “Sheena Is A Parasite” and a cover of Screaming Lord Sutch’s “Jack The Ripper” were writhing, germy gobs hocked into that mid-’00s spate of British…

For months, critics and fans have been abuzz about Savages, the London post-punk revivalists, who made a rip-roaring American television debut last night on Jimmy Fallon. But Jehnny Beth and company are not the first London band called Savages. Nor, with all due respect, are they the most savage Savages. The Savages were the backing band of Screaming Lord Sutch, one of the great eccentrics in British rock history. The group was formed in London in the early sixties and performed for years, on and off, in a bewildering array of configurations. At various times, band members have included Jeff Beck, Albert Lee, Keith Moon of the Who, Danny McCulloch of the Animals, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Jimmy Page and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. Researching the Savages, I’ve discovered, is task that can send a man careening through a Borgesian labyrinth of mirrors.

Hey, Dreadites, it's Volume 4 of Scare-riff-eyeing: Musical Abominations Horror Fans Should Be Killing For and Dying Over! Go into that cluttered Fred Flintstone-esque closet of yours, pull out those monster feet swim fins, and get 'em on. It's almost summer, and we're hitting the beach...
For the most part, if you are a horror music fan, your choices of genre are pretty varied, surprisingly. There are the obligatory death metal pioneers Cannibal Corpse in one corner, backed by literally a legion of other death metal bands, all competing to sing about the latest filmic gem of gory obscurity before one of their brethren. In another corner you have the psychobilly/horror punk thing with bands like The Nekromantix, the Misfits-worshiping Japanese quartet Balzac, and their own sizable army of like-minded bands, who all share an obligatory love for The Misfits and The Cramps. There are a plethora of faux-soundtrack bands like Anima Morte,...

When people ask me about horror music, one of the first things that comes to mind is horrorpunk. The sound and look of horrorpunk is bloody, ghoulish, sometimes campy and always fun. One of the most well-known and prolific horrorpunk record labels is the German-based, FiendForce.
We sat down with one of their fearless leaders, Thorston (who also happens to be the singer of the well known horrorpunk band The Other), to talk about the music, the horror, and of course the movies. Please join us, audio zombies, and dont forget to lend an ear to the bloody tracks included below.
Polina: Hello, Thorsten, and thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us about horrorpunk and Fiendforce Records. Can you please tell our readers a little about horrorpunk and its connection to horror movies?
Thorsten: Obviously the whole idea for horrorpunk came from artists and bands like Screaming Jay Hawkins,...
