Zack Snyder dropped the first official trailer for Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire during Netflix’s Geeked Week 2023. The three-minute trailer focuses on Sofia Boutella as Kora, a former soldier who is called upon to gather fighters to take on the Motherworld.

During a Geeked Week Q&a, Snyder discussed creating the world of Rebel Moon.
“When you’re starting to create canon, you’ve got to be careful not to paint yourself into a corner that you are like, ‘Oh geez, I wish the character could do that, but I guess I can’t now because I’ve set them up in this way.’ So, a lot of...

Filmmaker Zack Snyder has affirmed online speculation surrounding his forthcoming Netflix space opera Rebel Moon, confirming that it will be split into two films, with multiple cuts to be released of each installment.
Snyder’s comments came as part of an interview with Vanity Fair, also featuring his producing partner and wife, Deborah Snyder. In it, Deborah explains that the decision to expand Rebel Moon into a two-parter emerged from a dialogue with higher-ups at Netflix, including Film chairman Scott Stuber. “Originally, the script was one movie, but it was in ‘Zack form,'” she says. “It was 172 pages.”
In coming to understand that the film would come in at around a three-hour runtime, she explains, “Stuber was like, ‘On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason,’ even though you’ll binge-watch a series of eight episodes.
“Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours,...

We now have another piece of the puzzle folks. Just a few moments ago, the Directors Guild of America revealed their nominees. DGA doesn’t always match up with the Academy Awards lineup of Best Director, but it’s safe to assume that at least three or four of the honored individuals today will hear their names on Oscar nomination morning. DGA thankfully included plenty of diversity in their lineup this year, which also bode well for what AMPAS might do. Time will tell, but even a small step in the right direction is still very much a step in the right direction. DGA actually went with my currently predicted Oscar five. That would be Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Christopher Nolan for Dunkirk, and Jordan Peel for Get Out. Not surprisingly, Peele was...

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominees for the 70th Annual DGA Awards in the feature film categories, including both feature film and first-film feature film. Heavy hitters like Guillermo del Toro (his first DGA nod) and Christopher Nolan (his fourth) made the cut, along with awards season favorites like Greta Gerwig for her “Lady Bird” and Jordan Peele for his “Get Out,” who pulled in nominations in both categories. Other first-timers of note include Aaron Sorkin and Taylor Sheridan, who both made the jump to directing with their newest features, along with “Lady Macbeth” helmer William Oldroyd and “Patti Cake$” director Geremy Jasper.
Notable missing names include Steven Spielberg for his “The Post,” Denis Villeneuve for his “Blade Runner 2049,” and Ridley Scott for his “All the Money in the World,” all of whom have received best director nods during the season from various guilds and voting bodies.

Chicago – After snagging the Best Actor prize at the 68th Venice Film Festival, Michael Fassbender’s acclaimed performance in Steve McQueen’s drama, “Shame,” will be able to premiere on American screens in the near future. On Sept. 9, Fox Searchlight Pictures presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula announced that their studio had acquired U.S. rights to the film, while HanWay Films will handle international sales.
“Shame” marks the second intimate collaboration between McQueen and Fassbender, who each earned raves for 2008’s “Hunger,” a galvanizing look at the last days of Irish republican hunger striker Bobby Sands. Whereas “Hunger” required Fassbender to drop a great deal of pounds, “Shame” entailed an entirely different but equally extreme level of physical commitment from the actor.
He plays a Brandon, a New Yorker whose sexual addiction causes him to live an isolated existence until a visit from his sister (Carey Mulligan) reawakens demons from his past.

In what might be my favorite news of the entire week, Deadline tells us that Fox Searchlight has picked up Steve McQueen‘s Shame for American distribution. Just hearing that it’s been acquired is good enough, but it means more in this case — after all, we were all questioning just a few days ago who would take on a film that has such graphic content.
Said content includes full-frontal nudity from Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan, in addition to uncompromising sex scenes featuring the former. McQueen won’t remove a single frame from his film; he should — by no means whatsoever — be required to do so, but this insistence was causing a problem when it came to real distribution in the U.S. No signs point to Searchlight cutting it, which means that the release of it is going to be quite limited. Ironically enough, the bid came down...

One of the biggest critical hits at the Venice Film Festival was Shame, in which Hunger director Steve McQueen once again works with actor Michael Fassbender to tell a story of a man who doesn't quite have control over his sexual urges. I've edged away from full reviews, but reports peg it as both gruesome (for one scene) and quite sexually explcit, with full frontal displays from Fassbender and co-star Carey Mulligan. (THR [1] mentioned "male and female full-frontal nudity, graphic depictions of straight/gay/threeway sex, masturbation, urination and a gruesome [redacted to avoid spoilers].") Scanning reviews paints Shame as a venue for a very effective performance from Michael Fassbender, if nothing else. And as McQueen has refused to cut the film, it is also one which will go out as an Nc-17. So it has been the subject of debate for the past week -- who'll pick this one up? As it turns out,...

Fox Searchlight has picked up Steve McQueen's Nc-17 drama Shame. Deadline reports that this is one of the first deals made during this years Toronto Film Festival. Both Searchlight and The Weinstein Company were involved in bidding on this film that is said to be a powerful performance by Michael Fassbender, who plays "a New Yorker unable to manage his sex life when his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves in to his apartment, and his world spirals out of control."
This is great news for this controversial film, which "is unabashedly Nc-17, features graphic sex scenes and nudity, and McQueen has final cut and will not change a frame." The deal also will call for a late-year release and Best Actor campaign for Fassbender; Searchlight will already be waging a campaign in the same category for George Clooney in the Alexander Payne-directed The Descendants.

This article, written by Bergen Swanson, originally appeared in our Winter, 2002 issue You've Done It! The screenplay you've been slaving over for months has finally been optioned by an edgy production company noted for offbeat films. Or, the movie that has consumed your life for the past two years has been picked up by a noted distributor. Emptying out your savings, selling your comic book collection, sleeping on friends' couches - it's all been worth it. But then the unthinkable happens. The company that bought your film or script files for bankruptcy, and your project gets thrown into legal limbo, possibly never to see the light of day. A far-fetched scenario? The sudden demise of companies like The Shooting Gallery and, most recently...
