Global streamer Starzplay and L.A.-based Spanish-language streaming platform Pantaya have re-teamed with U.K. production-distribution giant Fremantle and the Larraín brothers’ Fabula on sci-fi miniseries “The Shelter” (“El Refugio”).
Starring Alberto Guerra (“La Jauria”) and Ana Claudia Talancón (“Como Caído del Cielo”) and directed by Argentina’s Pablo Fendrik (“El Ardor”), “The Shelter” wraps principal photography this week after 10 weeks of filming in rural areas around Santiago de Chile.
In industry terms, “The Shelter” forms part of a burgeoning axis between like-minded and complementary players in the U.S., Latin America and the U.K. who have been involved in some of the most exciting, relevant and artistically ambitious of recent Spanish-language dramas hitting screens or in the pipeline, whether “La Jauría,” “Señorita 89” – where all four companies partner – or “Express.”
The series captures Fendrik on tremendous TV form after making “Amongst Men” and “The Bronze Garden,” both for HBO Latin America.

Isaac Ezban
Isaac Ezban
Mexico, 2015
Mexico’s Isaac Ezban is two for two with his follow-up to last year’s gripping psychological thriller The Incident. Combining equal parts 50’s sci-fi b-movies and lost Twilight Zone episodes, The Similars is an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek black comedy with just the right amount of gore. Right from the start writer/director Ezban revels in the trappings of 60s aesthetics, opening with a Saul Bass-style credit sequence, a Bernard Herrmann-inspired score, a soundtrack that includes classic surf music and a voiceover that brings to mind The Outer Limits.
The Similars begins with a very simple set up as an omniscient narrator fills us in on how a bunch of strangers came together (by chance or fate) to the desolate bus station which serves as the only location in the lean 89 minute feature. The year is 1968 and a heavy rain...

Loneliness may be the single worst thing a human being can feel. As humans, we strive for interaction between one another, be that lengthy conversations or the most brief of Facebook-style interchanges about the most banal of subjects. That very concept is at the root of the new film from first time filmmaker and Cannes Film Festival award winner (Camera d’Or, 2011), Michael Rowe. Entitled Ano Bisieto (or Leap Year as it is called stateside), this film festival hit is an intriguing study of isolation, both conceptually and creatively.

"Cars 2, directed (like several great Pixar films of the last two decades) by John Lasseter, finds itself in the unlucky position of the not-so-bright kid in a brilliant family," finds Slate's Dana Stevens. "No matter if his performance in school is comfortably average; he'll always be seen as a disappointment compared to his stellar siblings. There's nothing really objectionable about Cars 2, although parents of young children should be warned that a few evil vehicles meet violently inauspicious ends. It's sweet-spirited, visually delightful (if aurally cacophonous), and it will make for a pleasant enough family afternoon at the movies. But we've come to expect so much more than mere pleasantness from Pixar that Cars 2 feels almost like a betrayal."

To Laura (Mónica del Carmen), the desolate protagonist of Michael Rowe’s absorbing debut Leap Year, the sight of a neighboring couple cuddling before the TV is a recurring vision of romance and domesticity at once idealized and unsettling—she watches them, masturbates to the distant spectacle (as in Hitchcock, the window becomes a rectangle for projected fantasies, a movie screen), and sobs. A twentysomething freelance writer who, except for one brief, pregnant sequence set in a supermarket, is never seen outside of her cramped Mexico City flat, her every quotidian activity (fibbing to her mom on the phone, playing Tetris on her laptop, bedding random men in one-night stands) is scrutinized with the same cool concentration and precisely framed camera set-ups. When one of the men (Gustavo Sánchez Parra), a closet sadist who spots the closet masochist, surprises Laura with a full catalog of increasingly brutal humiliation rites, the stolid,...

Unstoppable (12A)
(Tony Scott, 2010, Us) Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, Ethan Suplee, Kevin Dunn. 98 mins
This literally one-track action thriller is the perfect fit for Scott, Hollywood's master of manliness and heavy machinery. It's based on a true story that just happens to have a plot like a disaster movie: a massive, unmanned train carrying hazardous chemicals is hurtling towards populated areas; might the prickly railroad veteran and his rookie partner just be able to stop it? Everyone knows where it's going but it's got enough momentum to smash through to the finish, and the purity of the premise is a good fit with Scott's visual excess.
The American (15)
(Anton Corbijn, 2010, Us) George Clooney, Violante Placido, Paolo Bonacelli. 105 mins
Corbijn follows up Control with a sparse, existential hitman thriller in the Le Samourai/Day Of The Jackal mould, with Clooney in picturesque Italy. Apart from the classy visuals, it...

Review by Mike Gregory
Sebastián Cordero’s 2009 film, Rage reminded me of two films, Steve McQueen’s 2008
film “Hunger,” and George Sluzier’s 1988 thriller, “The Vanishing.” Considering how much I
despised both of those films, bearing similarity to each of them is not a good sign. Rage is just
as pretentious as “Hunger,” and just as boring as “The Vanishing.”
Films that take themselves seriously are not automatically bad films (unless the situation calls for
it not to, but never mind). Some great films have been serious dramas. But a film of any kind
has to give us something that makes us not hate ourselves for watching it. “Rage” doesn’t do
that. In every area, this Mexican film is a failure. It’s neither romantic nor suspenseful. Worst
of all, it’s a film so boring that I could barely get myself to hate it.

Sebastián Cordero's third film Rabia is a romantic thriller about José María (Gustavo Sánchez Parra), a construction worker on the run for killing his foreman who hides in the mansion where his girlfriend Rosa (Martina García) works as a housekeeper. Rabia had its World Premiere in the Contemporary World Cinema program at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, where Diana Sanchez wrote in her program capsule: "Rabia is an incisive commentary on the frustration of Latin Americans living in Spain. Victims of racism and paternalism, they must endure humiliation in order to keep their jobs, send money home and attain a better future. Often robbed of dignity, many are forced to live like José María--hidden, the unwanted other in Spanish daily life." Rabia now boasts its Us premiere at the 2010 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
