Veteran film festival director Marco Müller has been named the new artistic director of Italy’s Taormina Film Fest and will take over for Taormina’s 70th edition this year.
Müller is one of the great journeymen of the festival circuit, having run A-list events in Venice, Rotterdam, Locarno and, most recently, the Pingyao festival in Macao.
Sergio Bonomo, special commissioner of the Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation, which runs the festival, said “Maestro” Müller will be “a driving force of success for the prestigious film event.”
Taormina is one of the world’s oldest film festivals, and one blessed with one of the world’s most beautiful locations in the sun-kissed region of Sicily overlooking Mount Etna that The White Lotus picked as the backdrop for its season 2. The festival centerpiece is the Teatro Antico amphitheater, an historic Greek theater used for Taormina’s premieres.

When "The Postcard Killings" arrived in theaters back in 2020, we all turned our noses up at the idea of Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a detective on the case of the serial killer who offed his daughter. "No, Jeffrey Dean Morgan," we said, "we reject your offer of a trauma-propelled crime thriller," and promptly bestowed on his ill-fated film a 38% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics were even more intolerant of this adaptation of James Patterson and Liza Marklund's #1 New York Times bestselling thriller. "There just isn't enough depth to the screenplay," proclaimed Variety, while the LA Times accused the film of being "awkwardly pitched between serious art and pulp trash." All of which resulted in an abject 24% critic score on Rt. Despite the involvement of award-winning Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanovic, then, "The Postcard Killings" was pretty much Doa.

The first Floodlight Summit will take place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 in Cartagena, Colombia. The event, curated and organized by Philippa Kowarsky and Alesia Weston, is a one-of-a-kind pilot for a long-term alliance that seeks to connect investigative journalists and their reporting with the film and television industry.
The event has been established by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (Occrp) and the Gabo Foundation as part of both institutions’ public interest focus. It will attempt “to nurture a symbiotic relationship between investigative journalism and fiction filmmaking that will result in storytelling that entertains, educates, and inspires,” according to a press statement. “Investigative journalists can help adapt their extensive reporting about organized crime and corruption into new formats to reach more audiences while filmmakers can pull from a wealth of content and expertise across subjects to inform their projects.”

The Cairo International Film Festival’s upcoming 45th edition has been canceled due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Cairo fest and market, which is the oldest running film event in the Middle East and Africa, announced its decision Wednesday on Instagram with the following statement: “Minister of Culture Dr. Neven El-Kelany has decided to postpone the 45th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival, which was scheduled to take place from Nov. 15 to 24. The new date for the festival will be determined later.”
But the Cairo Fest’s press office subsequently specified that the postponement actually amounts to a de-facto cancellation. It comes as Egypt is contending with a mass exodus of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip into its Sinai Peninsula, amid Israeli bombardments. Israel’s attacks on Gaza have prompted Egypt to urge Israel to provide safe passage for civilians from the enclave rather than encouraging them to flee southwest towards Sinai.

The Heart of Sarajevo awards for TV series, the Sarajevo Film Festival’s awards strand for TV shows, unraveled this evening, and they were dominated by two shows, the Serbian comedy Mom and Dad Are Playing War 2 (Tata Se Igraju Rata 2) and the Bosnian drama The Hollow (Kotlina).
Mom and Dad Are Playing War 2 took all six comedy awards during the ceremony. The series was created by the popular Serbian actor Gordan Kičić, who also serves as the lead actor, writer, and producer. The series, produced by Filmkombajn and Rts, follows Veljko, who gets the news his father has died. Upon returning to his family in Belgrade, many home truths are uncovered, and he stays longer than expected.
Speaking with Deadline following the sweep, Kičić said: “It’s a great feeling. I really didn’t believe we’d win all six awards. It’s a success for my production company and my team.

At times Bosnia and Herzegovina has looked like it was stuck in a bit of a no-man’s land when it comes to film production, lacking the financial fire-power to press forward, but its TV series business is booming.
The Southeast European country boasts two Oscar nominations – Danis Tanović’s “No Man’s Land,” which nabbed a statuette in 2002, and Jasmila Žbanić’s “Quo Vadis, Aida?,” which was nominated in 2021 – and its filmmakers have enjoyed success on the festival circuit, but it still hasn’t upped its meagre level of production, especially in terms of fiction features, with only one or two majority Bosnian films produced a year.
The problem lies in the “messy and unregulated model of audiovisual support in general,” according to producer-director Jasmin Duraković, whose film “The Glory of Unhappiness” screens in the Bh Film sidebar at Sarajevo Film Festival, which presents the recent crop of films with investment from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the three years since the Sarajevo Film Festival launched its Heart of Sarajevo TV awards, much has changed in the Balkan region’s television sector thanks to investment from regional telecom companies in the local production space. Companies such as Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Bh Telecom, the main sponsor of this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival, and Telecom Serbia have been flexing their financial muscle in a space that undercapitalized public broadcasters and once confident-but-now-nervous global streamers are yet to enter.

All five best-actor contenders this year are first-time Oscar nominees. Two are newbies to the film industry, so that’s not surprising. But among the veterans, Colin Farrell is long overdue, after a 25-year career marked by breadth, daring and risk-taking.
In Searchlight’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Farrell meets all the criteria for an Oscar win: There’s not a false note in the performance, it’s very different from what you’ve seen him do, and you can’t imagine anyone else playing the part.
In person, Farrell is 180 degrees from Padraic.
In a long conversation, he didn’t dwell on the movie, yet all roads led to Inisherin: Farrell spoke of a sense of community, of family, of friendship and the power of art — all topics addressed in the film.
About growing up, Farrell says, “I come from working-class stock. My parents weren’t into films. Now,...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Asher Monroe's Hush Hush, directed by Danis Tanović. One thing I'm setting out to do with this series is that I try to show the reader that music videos are an artform that often connects deeply with the 'main oeuvre' of a particular director. I try to find the common ground between the directors films, and the bite sized music driven snippet they directed. Often it is not hard to see the connection between the music videos and the films of a director, but sometimes.... it is. Case in point, the Sound and Vision of this week, which was directed by Danis Tanović....

Exclusive: House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy has dropped out of feature thriller Anna about fearless Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya due to a scheduling clash, replaced by Naomi Battrick (The Postcard Killings).
D’Arcy, who broke out as the older Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, was due to play Politkovskaya’s daughter Vera Politkovskaya in the Cannes Market package which stars two-time BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake (Black Mirror) as lead and is directed by Broadchurch’s James Strong from a screenplay by Eric Poppen.
Deadline understands Battrick replaced D’Arcy several weeks ago in the film that was previously titled Mother Russia, with D’Arcy dropping out due to a scheduling clash. Battrick’s past credits include Danis Tanovic’s Cush Jumbo-starring thriller The Postcard Killings, in which she played Marina Haysmith. She also led Sky’s Jamestown and featured in BBC drama A Very English Scandal.

When it comes to creative pedigree, it would be hard to argue with the bona fides of Bosnian crime drama “The Hollow,” which was co-created by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanović (“No Man’s Land”) and had a splashy premiere Saturday night at the Sarajevo Film Festival. The series is directed by Tanović and Bosnian filmmaker Aida Begić, whose latest feature, “A Ballad,” also received the red-carpet treatment this week in Sarajevo’s official competition.
More than just a prestige drama from a region that’s increasingly exporting its shows to the world, however, “The Hollow” could represent a paradigm shift in the countries of the former Yugoslavia, where global streaming services have been acquiring titles such as “The Paper” (Netflix) and “The Silence” (HBO Max) but are yet to put significant investment into local production.

In Bosnian drama series “The Hollow,” a body is found in a museum. As senior inspector Edib Pašić tries to solve the case, he dives deeper and deeper into modern-day Sarajevo. Which hasn’t really changed all that much and keeps protecting its secrets.
“This combination of old and new is something we all carry inside. We are stuck in the past yet experiencing this strange transition in the present,” producer Amra Bakšić Čamo tells Variety. She has co-created the show alongside Danis Tanović, the director of Oscar winner “No Man’s Land.”
Presented in Sarajevo Film Festival’s Avant Premiere Series, “The Hollow” was produced by Scca/pro.ba for Bh Content Lab and Bh Telecom.
“If you go to a random bar in Sarajevo right now, they will play 1980s songs. I don’t know where it comes from. Why haven’t we moved on culturally? Also, we are...

In some ways it’s a year of transition for the Sarajevo Film Festival, which sees former industry head and co-director Jovan Marjanović take the helm as festival director, while long-time staffer Maša Marković takes over as head of industry. For Marković, who began her career at the long-running Bosnian fest 15 years ago, the change “was kind of organic,” offering the kind of smooth transition that has allowed Sarajevo to retain its position as the leading industry confab in Southeast Europe.
For nearly three decades, the festival has identified and launched local talent while serving as a think tank of sorts for the region’s rapidly evolving screen industries. This year’s CineLink Industry Days program will stick to that time-tested formula, even as it tries to adjust to dramatic shifts in the way that content in the region and around the globe is being produced and distributed.

Mike Goodridge, who was appointed artistic director of the International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM) in 2017, is stepping down after four editions. The festival will not take place in 2021, as Covid-19 restrictions remain tight in Macau.
In 2020, like many festivals, IFFAM went online. Last year, it featured a film screening section and masterclasses with Hirokazu Koreeda, Hur Jin-ho, Nina Hoss and Viggo Mortensen.
Goodridge is busy in production and management through his Good Chaos label and will continue to work in festival programming and curation. He was a consultant with the Chicago International Film Festival this year.
“I have had an incredible experience working with my friends and colleagues in Macau,” said Goodridge. “We built the audience for different kinds of cinema in the city and created an event that resonated across the region and the world. Mirjana Karanović, an actor best known for her starring role in Emir Kusturica’s “When Father Was Away on Business” and Jasmila Žbanić’s Golden Bear winner “Grbavica,” is preparing to direct her second feature, “Mother Mara.” This follows her directorial debut, “A Good Wife,” which competed in Sundance’s World Cinema – Dramatic section in 2016, and screened at more than 40 festivals.
Producer Snezana van Houwelingen pitched the new project at Venice Gap-Financing Market last week. Karanović will also star in “Mother Mara,” alongside Vucic Perovic.
The success of “A Good Wife” was “very beneficial” for Karanović, she says. Meeting with the audience gave her directorial self a confidence boost, allowing to believe she can direct again. It also made pitching and finding partners for “Mother Mara” easier, van Houwelingen says.
“Mother Mara” follows a successful businesswoman and single mother who suddenly loses her 18-year-old son Nemanja to a heart attack.

Jasmila Zbanic’s Quo Vadis, Aida?, which debuted at Venice this year, is Bosnia’s entry for the 2021 International Oscar race.
The movie follows the titular Aida, a translator for the Un in a small town in Srebrenica. When the Serbian army takes over the town, her family is among the thousands of citizens looking for shelter in the Un camp.
It was well received after its Venice premiere, which was in Official Competition, and it also screened in Toronto before being named best international film at the Antalya Film Festival in Turkey. On Saturday (October 10), the film had an emotional Bosnian premiere at the Memorial Centre in Srebrenica, which is located on the site of the Un base in the story.
“It was the most emotional screening in my life,” said Zbanic. “In the audience were the same people who were there on July 11th 1995 as refugees seeking help from the Un.
