How I Met Your Mother Ep. 9.12 “The Rehearsal Dinner” tries to capture old magic, with mixed results
How I Met Your Mother Season 9, Episode 12 “The Rehearsal Dinner”
Written by Chuck Tatham
Directed by Pamela Fryman
Airs Monday nights at 8pm Et on CBS
One of the many things How I Met Your Mother‘s lost over the years is its sense of wonder: as Ted and the gang’s adventures have drawn to a close, the surprises have faded. Part of this comes from the construction of the show: at this point, we all know Ted’s happy ending is coming, just as we spent most of season eight (and seven, if we’re being honest) knowing that Barney and Robin were going to get engaged. It’s equally ambitious and constraining: knowing the big moment is coming is both exciting and frustrating – like this season, as we wait and wait for Marshall to arrive (which will happen next week) and Ted to meet and fall in love with the Mother.

Brad Garrett, who starred in ABC/20th TV’s midseason comedy series How To Live With Your Parents, is back in business with ABC and 20th TV with a starring half-hour vehicle. The network has handed a pilot script commitment with significant penalty to When the Balls Drop, a single-camera comedy staring and co-written and executive produced by the Emmy-winning Everybody Loves Raymond alum. Inspired by Garrett’s forthcoming autobiographical book of the same name, When The Balls Drop is an honest look at life’s second half through the eyes of a divorced family man as he juggles home life, work, and the hilarious realities of middle-age. Garrett is co-writing with Chuck Tatham. The two are executive producing with Television 360′s Eryn Brown and Meghan Lyvers. Additionally, 20th TV has signed Garrett in a talent deal, allowing the studio to cast him in an existing pilot project should Balls not go to pilot.

It has been a long, winding road to get to this point. How long and how winding? Very, as you'll see with this timeline of significant events in the life, death and resurrection of "Arrested Development."
Summer 2002: Ron Howard pitches an idea to his fellow Imagine Entertainment executives for a comedy series that's tightly scripted but filmed to look like a reality show or documentary. Could reality TV have found its newest stars? That’s what the animated family of The Potts is hoping. In the first episode of the series, the reality tv-obsessed Potts clan attempts to tape an accident for an America’s Funniest Home Videos-style program. Surely nothing could go wrong with this plan. The pilot from FishBowl Worldwide Media was written and produced by How I Met Your Mother executive producer Chuck Tatham, with animation from David & Goliath founder and illustrator Todd Goldman. Fox has bought a multi-camera comedy from How I Met Your Mother executive producer Chuck Tatham and 21 Laps/Adelstein, while NBC has bought a drama from Northern Exposure and St. Elsewhere co-creator Joshua Brand and Peter Horton. Tatham’s 20th TV-produced project is about an estranged couple reunited under less than ideal circumstances. Tatham, repped by Wme and The Collective, is writing and will executive produce with Shawn Levy, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements. Brand’s The Other Reality is a show-within-a-show social satire about the life of Eric Bittman, an enormously successful reality show producer and a less-than-successful family man. FishBowl Worldwide is a Los Angeles production shop helmed by multi-Emmy Award-winning Vin di Bona, the television producer behind such hits as MacGyver, Entertainment Tonight, and America’s Funniest Home Videos. CuteWinFail was FishBowl’s first big foray into digital media. The weekly series is a kind of reboot of America’s Funniest Home Videos for the YouTube generation meets Tosh.0 hosted by long-time YouTube star Toby Turner and produced in association with PhillyD’s DeFranco Inc. Each installment features a trio of user-submitted videos which Turner then dubs (you guessed it!) cute, win, or fail. It’s popular, garnering 180,00+ YouTube subscribers and 27+ million views in just over a year of programming. It’s good, too. You should give it a look. FishBowl Worldwide’s second big foray into digital media was just announced. The company has begun production on a pilot episode for the original animated web series The Potts.

Hopeless romantic Ted Mosby gets one step closer to his soul mate when “How I Met Your Mother” Season Five arrives on DVD September 21 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Fox is worshipping at "The Church of Reggie".
The network has handed out a put pilot commitment to the religion-themed comedy project from Ron Howard and "Arrested Development" writer-producer Chuck Tatham.
The single-camera "Church", from 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV, centers on a man who starts a religion on his front porch.
"This is a guy who has spent his whole life fighting various personal struggles and ultimately arrives at a position when he realizes he has valuable religion he can offer to his community," said Tatham, the project's writer.
Like "Arrested", "Church" is a pet project of Howard's, who originally had an idea for a show about a guy who starts religion in his garage.
Imagine TV, which had worked with Tatham on "Arrested" and on a pilot last year, approached Tatham with the premise.
"I thought it was very topical and would resonate with a lot of people," Tatham said. "I changed it from (his) garage to front porch and thought it was a story where we can have fun discussing the issues of beliefs in a contemporary world."
Tatham, who is under an overall deal at 20th TV, began writing the script Wednesday night with three weeks left until the end of the writers' union contract and a possible writers' strike.
