Russell Boyd (r) with Peter Weir (l) shooting Master and Commander.
On May 6, the Acs National Awards for Cinematography will be held at Nsw Parliament House, the 46th edition of the annual awards..
This year, the work of the nominees was judged by a panel of five Acs members — president Ron Johanson plus Russell Boyd, Anna Howard, Ernie Clark and Andrew Taylor — over a three-day period..
Feature nominees this year include Denson Baker (The Dark Horse), Andrew Commis (The Daughter), Katie Milwright (Looking for Grace) and Bonnie Elliott (Spear).
Judging feature work can be a tricky proposition, says Boyd. .We.re there to judge the cinematography, not the story or the direction, although that can influence your decisions..

I am absolutely on vacation this week. But when something this magical happens, you absolutely just have to share it with the world. For me, that something is a "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" / "Mad Max: Fury Road" trailer mash-up. It was only yesterday I was joining the movement to rebrand "Slave Leia" as "Hutt Slayer Leia" because single-handedly choking out a Hutt crime lord is a feat that deserves a title. Of course, thinking about Leia literally using the chain of her patriarchal overlord to kill him got me thinking about "Mad Max: Fury Road." So I popped off this wish to the Internet ether and thought that would be the end of it. Annnnd now I want a #MadMaxFuryRoad / #StarWars mash-up with Leia as Furiosa and other Jabba slave girls as wives. Do it, Internet. — Donna Dickens (@MildlyAmused) August 18, 2015 It wasn't the end of it. What a lovely day!

He had no problem earning votes during his stint on “American Idol,” and Clay AIken hopes his popularity hasn’t waned in the years since.
The 35-year-old pop singer will officially announce his candidacy for Congress later today (February 5) as he seeks to challenge Us Representative Renee Ellmers of North Carolina.
Aiken explained, “I saw this as the best place I could serve, because I think Washington, in general, is dysfunctional. I think it’s high time we put people in Congress who were not beholden to their party, and not beholden to anything but the people who they live around and grew up around, in my case.”
Additionally, Clay is going after Ellmers’ voting record and her move to cut funding for military families. “She didn’t have to run on her record last time. I plan on changing that. I want her to have to talk about and...

Cardiff City started life after Malky Mackay with a deflating draw at home to basement club Sunderland as Jack Colback snatched a point for the Black Cats.
The Bluebirds led 2-0 through goals from Jordon Mutch and Fraizer Campbell before Steven Fletcher set up a grandstand finish by pulling one back for the visitors. Colback’s deflected effort deep inside stoppage time saw Sunderland continue their unbeaten run.
A point apiece kept Cardiff behind West Bromwich Albion on goal difference and saw the Black Cats edge close to safety. Gus Poyet’s side are now just a point behind West Ham and two adrift of Fulham and Crystal Palace.
Bluebirds caretaker David Kerslake brought Gary Medel back into midfield in one of three changes from Mackay’s last match in charge – a 3-0 home defeat to Southampton. Aron Gunnarsson and Peter Odemwingie made way whilst left back Andrew Taylor missed out injured.

Date: Saturday, 28 December; Venue: Cardiff City Stadium; Kickoff: 17:30 GMT
Sunderland have won on their last two visits to Cardiff City, but face the Bluebirds for the first time since they left Ninian Park. The Black Cats will start in the Welsh capital bottom of the Premier League despite a four-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
Gus Poyet’s side followed up two goalless draws and knocking Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup with a win over ten-man Everton on Boxing Day. If two teams from fellow strugglers Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Ham win earlier on Saturday, managerless Cardiff could also kickoff in the relegation zone.
Malky Mackay was offered the festive olive branch of keeping his job as Bluebirds boss for “the foreseeable future”, but club owner Vincent Tan snapped it on Friday after heavy defeats at Liverpool and home to Southampton either side of Christmas.

Aston Villa’s poor run has stemmed from the dip in form of their front trio Gabriel Agbonlahor, Andreas Weimann, and Christian Benteke. They will be without Agbonlahor and Weimann for the Cardiff clash, which means a new look attacking pairing again for Lambert’s men. Left-back continues to be a problem area for the Midlands side, with Antonion Luna and Joe Bennett both ruled out with injury – leaving Lambert to stick with a makeshift left-side with Leandro Bacuna set to deputise.
Cardiff City are playing with confidence, but have had unwanted distractions from the club’s owner Vincent Tan. Nevertheless, they will still be on cloud nine following the Swansea victory and will regard this weekend’s match as winnable considering Aston Villa poor home form – with just one win at Villa Park this season.

Cardiff City beat bitter South Wales rivals Swansea in the two sides’ first top flight meeting. Steven Caulker headed home a corner to settle it.
Who impressed us in the WhatCulture office? Here are out player ratings.
Cardiff
David Marshall: Saved from Michu and an offside Bony. Not a great deal to do, but what the Scottish stopper did was decent enough. 6/10.
Kevin Theophile-Catherine: Crosses blocked time and again. A baffling summer signing, but physical enough to limit little Routledge from getting forward. 5/10.
Steven Caulker: Good set piece threat from the former Spurs and Swansea man. Got on the end of Bellamy corner to score. Great defending to deny Bony thereafter. A towering presence in both areas. Our man of the match. 7/10.
Ben Turner: A good partner for Caulker. Forced Michu and Bony to go deep in search of the ball. Overshadowed by his fellow centre half though.

Former Swansea loan player Steven Caulker settled the South Wales derby in Cardiff City’s favour as the capital club pulled themselves four points clear of relegation danger.
Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay picked Craig Bellamy and faithful retainer Don Cowie in his XI as Korean player Kim and forward Fraizer Campbell dropped out. Otherwise this was the same team that started the goalless draw at Norwich.
Swans manager Michael Laudrup meanwhile had Jonjo Shelvey back in place of Alvaro Vazquez in the only alteration to his side from the home draw with West Ham.
Michu snatched at a shot when a Shelvey centre found him inside five minutes for the visitors and fired wide. Swansea took the game to their hosts in customary passing fashion. Michu worked David Marshall with Shelvey again the source of supply though this time in the centre.

Director: Andrew Taylor. Writers: Andrew Taylor and Donovan Scheirer. Cast: Nathan Howe, Lindsay Adams, James Aaron, Anthony MacMahon, Danielle Spilchen, Donovan Scheirer. The fact that the tale "Two Corpses Go Dancing" is adapted from short story to theatrical form is to be commended. To see an extended version may well create interest in Polish-born author and folklorist Isaac Bashevis Singer’s fantastical works. His tales tend to look at what human nature does in adversity. And, when considering this dramatist lived through both World Wars, most of his life experiences can be read in the worlds he created. While not all of his stories are rooted in fantasy or horror – a good body of his works are based in real life – his short stories are characterized, if not personified, at Nobelprize.org to contain, “demons, spectres, ghosts and all kinds of infernal or supernatural powers from the rich storehouse of Jewish popular imagination.

Felix Sanchez won the Dominican Republic's first medal for the London Olympics. The country is widely celebrating its only medal -- and a gold one at that. With the tender memory of Sanchez's grandmother at the forefront, he ran a race worthy of a winner. He and Andrew Taylor have traded off wins in the last four Olympic Games, but this time, it was Sanchez who prevailed, eight years after his previous gold. Taylor wound up in fifth place, not the finish a two-time Olympic gold medalist wants.

Her secret? A strong family support system and one fabulous nanny.
“I have a fantastic nanny, and I’m very, very lucky to have family in New York, or else I would be not doing it quite as graciously as I think I am,” the actress, 42, tells Broadway.com.
“I have been extraordinary lucky and I do count my blessings. It has been a phenomenal decade both work-wise [on Brothers & Sisters and Six Feet Under] and these three little nut-jobs that my children are.

Rachel Griffiths has revealed that she is moving back to Australia. The 42-year-old Aussie actress, whose television drama Brothers and Sisters was axed last weekend, said that the relocation is for her children Banjo, Matilda and Clementine. Griffiths told The Daily Telegraph: "[It] is for the kids really. They love their cousins and their grandparents. We've been away for so long, it just feels like it's time to come home. I'll still work, but the Aussie TV and film industry feels really strong at the moment. I've worked hard for ten years and I don't want to be a lead on a TV show for a while after this." Although she garnered an Academy Award nomination for her role in 1998’s Hilary and Jackie, Rachel Griffiths — currently starring in ABC’s Brothers & Sisters — says that television work suits her just fine. “I have a nice balance,” she notes in the November issue of Cookie magazine.

Rachel Griffiths gave birth to her third child under a false name, after the paparazzi hijacked her last delivery.
The Australian star and her husband Andrew Taylor welcomed daughter Clementine Grace in Los Angeles back in June.
Griffiths was still haunted by a run in with the press when she gave birth to Clementine's big sister Adelaide four years before - and adopted stealth tactics to avoid their prying lenses this time around.
She says, "When I gave birth to Adelaide, all these paparazzi descended and I was in my dressing gown. It was traumatising. I didn't want to leave home for a month. No woman should be subjected to that.
"This time I checked in under a different name, to try and avoid that. I used Rebecca Hamilton."
But things didn't run as simply as Griffiths' planned, and she hints health problems made the birth a nerve-wracking affair.
She adds, "This time I thought I would be in and out, but things were a bit more complicated and I just want to thank everyone at Cedars for saving my baby's life.
"You only hear about the bad things, but everyday all across this country doctors and nurses are working so hard for us."...

"We were told to trust these institutions, and we did," says Mitch Tuchman. "We trusted Madoff. We trusted Aig. And now we've lost most of our life savings." Tuchman, though, is not an angry victim of some Ponzi scheme or shady subprime lender. To the contrary, the former hedge-fund manager is trying to be part of the solution, starting a company whose goal is to upend the trillion-dollar mutual-fund market by offering cheap, no-nonsense investment advice. Tuchman's MarketRiders is part of a movement of Web-based financial startups creating services that embrace transparency (even in their largely fee-based pricing) and improve the customer experience. These are the same traits that changed everything from music to auto sales, and given the financial industry's woes, it, too, looks ripe for this type of reinvention. According to The People, the celebrity chef is seen holding down the animal in an upcoming episode of Jamie's American Road Trip. Andrew Taylor, the director of Animal Aid, said: "The public is convinced Jamie Oliver is the real deal but hopefully this barbaric act will open their eyes to the fact he is a phoney when it comes to animal welfare. "He pretends he cares about animals but this makes an utter mockery of that. Castrating cattle in this way is vicious and grotesque and he's giving credibility to an ugly trade.
