Danny Simpson insists he’s not being greedy by refusing to sign a new deal at Newcastle United.
The 25-year-old right full-back, who has been first choice in his position for the past three seasons, claims that he just wants to be put on level terms with the salaries of the players around him and it’s not his intention to hold the club for ransom.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew revealed last week that the club had offered Simpson what he considered to be a great deal on his contract that expires next summer but if Simpson contented to be unwilling to renew, they would be forced to sell him this summer instead of losing him on a free transfer in twelve months.
Simpson told today’s edition of The Sunday Sun;
“I’m not a greedy player and I just want to be on par with the other players around me.

Everton take on Newcastle United at Goodison Park this afternoon, with both sides having everything to play for. Everton are looking to finish above their Merseyside rivals Liverpool for only the third time in Premier League history and Newcastle know if they win here and other results go their way, they will finish in the top four and a possible Champions League spot.
Kick-off time is at 3pm and the match won’t be screened live anywhere in the UK.
Everton have injury concerns over Leighton Baines (missing for the past month with a groin injury), Phil Neville and Darron Gibson for today’s game. All be assessed before kick-off, the latter two former Man United players having taken knocks in last week’s draw at Wolves.
Jack Rodwell (hamstring) and Victor Anichebe (groin) are both out for today’s game.

With Arsenal dropping points yesterday, failing to take the points gap between third, fourth and fifth to a comfortable 4 points, both Newcastle and Tottenham will be fired up to take maximum points from their own games this weekend. The North Londoners have now lost control of their own destiny, and must hope that neither Newcastle nor their own closest city rivals can take advantage and move up into third and the lucrative promise of automatic Champions League qualification.
It is undoubtedly the North Easterners who have the more difficult prospect, welcoming the champions elect to St James Park for what looks like it might be a stellar affair. The atmosphere, at least, is bound to be electric, and Sky have made the right decision to share the fixture with their customers.
For the two clubs involved tomorrow at St James Park at 1.30pm, the fixture might well be the biggest of the season.

Tomorrow sees Newcastle United and table toppers Manchester City lock horns in a game which may have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the league. It is already being called the Game of the Season, because it may well decide who wins the title, and who qualifies for next season’s Champions League competition, and you simply cannot underestimate how much a result would mean to either team.
Will Newcastle take any confidence in the fact that in the five same fixtures which have brought defeat for Man City they have picked up 9 points of the 12 available (Everton away will round out the season for the Toon)? Will Man City, with probably the finest goalkeeper in the league (according to the Pfa anyway), be able to stop the potent attacking threat of Senegalese hitman Papiss Cisse and his two partners in crime Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa?
Let’s hope so.

Chelsea are still missing central defenders Gary Cahill and David Luiz with hamstring injuries, so captain John Terry is likely to partner Branislav Ivanovic at the back. Newcastle United keeper Tim Krul is expected to overcome the slight back injury that forced him to sit out of training on Thursday. Magpies boss Alan Pardew revealed it was mostly a precautionary move and he has back-up keeper Rob Elliott on standby.
Cheick Tiote, Danny Guthrie, James Perch and Gabriel Obertan all returned to training this week and are expected to be available for selection, meaning United will be likely to line-up the same way as they did in the win against Bolton with Tiote likely replacing Perch in center of midfield and Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse and Demba continuing a three-man attack.

Newcastle United and Arsenal aren’t just battling for a Champions League finish but also for Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, according to The Daily Mail.

Mapou is valued in the £5-7 million range and has played 175 times for his club, scoring four goals.

With Newcastle United currently sitting in fifth in the Premier League, equal on points with Tottenham above them, and two clear of Chelsea below, despite the generally held pre-season expectation that the team would struggle having shed the likes of Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton, people are beginning to turn more attention to Alan Pardew’s men in the North East. And why not? Newcastle have made a mockery of those expectations, making pundits and fans eat their words in turn, and finding success not only on the pitch, but also on the books with finances looking impressively healthy.

For the home team, 2011/12 has been a season of fluctuation, with some excellent performances, including the December win at St James Park sporadically dotted between less impressive runs of form , which have seen Roy Hodgson’s men take up 14th position in the league. But the Baggies’ last five games have seen just one defeat, and they can realistically hope for a repeat of last year’s top half finish if they can continue that rich run of form into the final games of the season. They certainly play some good football, even when they are beaten, and it is no coincidence that Hodgson’s name is once more being linked with the England manager’s position.

Arsenal’s season threatens to come off the rails every week at the minute, but the strong showing against Milan in mid-week and the exciting acquisition of Lukas Podolski for next season will have given Arsene Wenger’s men a much needed boost after the disappointment of the 4-0 away leg drubbing in Milan. A win tonight against Newcastle United who sit in sixth with a five point cushion over Liverpool would see Arsenal move to within two points of North London rivals Tottenham in third.

Alan Pardew has revealed that striker Leon Best is likely to be out for the rest of the season through injury.
Speaking at Newcastle United’s pre-match press conference ahead of the visit to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening, Pardew said that Best’s injury is more serious than the initial prognosis of six weeks.
“I think it will be very doubtful that we will see Leon again this season, and that is a blow for us because he has been great. ”
“We have lost three or four players to long-term injuries, and have been a bit unlucky with that. Steven Taylor, Sylvain Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi and now Leon, so we have been unlucky on that front.
Best started the Premier League match last Sunday alongside the returning Demba Ba, but he was forced off the field with knee ligament damage after clashing with Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock on ten minutes.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew will be sweating on the fitness of a host of defensive options including Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson and Chiek Tiote ahead of Swansea’s visit to St. James Park this weekend.
In their last outing against Norwich, Pardew was forced to field a back four made up entirely of full backs with Danny Simpson and James Perch forming an unlikely central defensive partnership. However the possible returns of Coloccini and Williamson will no doubt shore up a defence that leaked four against the Canaries last week.
Tiote is also a notable potential omission from the squad. The Ivorian, recovering from a knee ligament injury, is hopeful for the fixture and would certainly add some extra guile and physicality to the centre of the park for Newcastle.

Ridgewell is no doubt itching to make his way back to the Premier League, something his colleagues Scott Dann has already done today with a move to Blackburn Rovers and also Cameron Jerome at Stoke – Birmingham aren’t really in an financial position to turn down offers.
Having made the £2 million move from rivals Aston Villa in 2007 (the first player to make a move across the midland divide in 23 years!) Ridgewell has been a consistent heart in the Birmingham defence having appeared 141 times and pitching in with an important 9 goal haul.

(Apologies for the delay in this week’s Premier League round-up. The bank holiday Monday put us at least a day behind)
Picture the scene, you’re in a heated exchange with a loved one due to something you or they have said or done. You’re fired up and you’re willing to stand and fight for what you believe in, like a knight facing a horde of marauding barbarians. Maybe that’s just me, too many full costumed Lord of the Rings marathons or something. I digress.
Snarling, perspiring, with gritted teeth and perhaps even drooling slightly you bat back forth the cries of “what did you mean by that?”, “but then you said”, “no I don’t always do that” and so on. Then comes that moment, the moment we all know and hate, the sinking feeling in the pit of your gut when you suddenly realise ‘fudge,...

The teams have been announced;
Newcastle: Krul, Simpson, Steven Taylor, Coloccini, Ryan Taylor, Lovenkrands, Cabaye, Tiote, Gutierrez, Obertan, Best.
Subs: Soderberg, Smith, Ba, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Vuckic, Ferguson.
Fulham: Schwarzer, Briggs, Hughes, Hangeland, Baird, Dempsey, Murphy, Sidwell, Donegan, Dembele, Kasami.
Subs: Etheridge, Kelly, Johnson, Senderos, Gecov, Etuhu, Frei.
Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire)
So clearly Shola Ameobi wasn’t fit which is a big loss and it’s Best over Ba that gets the nod. Obertan does end up front as support… with Lovenkrands again on the right. Interestingly no defender on the bench, Pardew picking Alan Smith and Shane Ferguson instead and no place at all for Dan Gosling.
Match kicks off at 1pm.
(I am a lifelong Newcastle United supporter so expect my match previews to be heavy slanted towards the Geordies as they are written for the like-minded).
After a bright start to the league campaign where four...

A thunderous 20 yard strike late in extra time from substitue Sammy Ameobi pushed Premier League club Newcastle United over the line against their tricky League Two opposition Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park tonight but for a long, long time… it looked like they were going to crash out of the League cup in the 2nd round like many of their peers this week.
Thankfully there was no repeat of the embarrassing visitors supporters reaction to Shola’s 19 year old brother’s winning strike against Darlington in a pre-season friendly last night month when they lived up to their threats “if Sammy scores, we’re on the pitch” for the enthusiastic and willing youngster who the Toon Army have quickly found a fondness for.
Scunthorpe had started the game brightly. Highly organised, energetic and with an urgency to close down the visitors and not let them play football. It really shook...

The half-hearted football and frustrating lack of entertainment on show at St. James Park in the no scoring first live televised match of the 20th Premier League season was overshadowed by a scuffle and a disgraceful display by Newcastle’s Joey Barton which led to the sending off of Arsenal’s biggest summer signing.
Arsene Wenger had included Ivorian forward Gervinho – his £10.5 million acquisition from Lille Osc in a starting line up that was missing Barcelona bound Cesc Febregas and Samir Nasri, the latter who is rumoured to be completing a big money transfer himself this week to Manchester City, and also the unfit Jack Wilshire. But it will be a debut to forget for Arsenal’s new big hope, sent off on his otherwise impressive Premiership debut for slapping Barton in the face seemingly with the power of a sledgehammer.

It's more than half a century since Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl landed like a bombshell in the staid world of 1950s America. But what was the poet really like? Friends and colleagues remember him
When Allen Ginsberg performed at the Six Gallery reading in San Francisco 1955, he was a fretful, unpublished poet, a man approaching his 30th birthday with a nagging sense that time was running out. The poet Gary Snyder predicted the night would be a "poetickall bomshell". He was right, but really, the bombshell was Howl itself. Ginsberg's poem was an incantatory epic – emotionally and sexually explicit and intent on exploding the anxieties of the atomic age. It helped jump-start the counter-cultural revolutions of the next decade and its author was hailed as the voice of the Beat Generation.
He may have been the most important American writer of the last century. He certainly thought he could be.

I haven’t heard anything about these films.
Whether the buzz is great, whether the buzz is tepid, I couldn’t tell you. That’s exactly why I’m looking forward to sending some of you guinea pigs to see the latest from Jason Statham on Tuesday, January 25th at 7 p.m. at Harkins Tempe Martketplace and then on February 1st at 7 p.m. at Harkins Tempe Marketplace as well.
It’ll be a 2 for 1 if you like or, if you so choose, you can pick one or the other. Either way, you’ll be seeing either the latest from the brawniest Englishman this side of the Atlantic or the latest creation blessed by the wizard himself,...

After all the brouhaha concerning whether Vince Vaughn’s character could say whether a car was or was not “ghey” (spelled the way the Internet intended) the movie is finally here to say once and for all if a vehicle is capable of having a sexual preference. Yes, I know, these are probably the same radicals who think that censoring Huck Finn of its nasty n-words was a good idea. It isn’t and it’s a form of censorship and good for Ron Howard for keeping the joke in tact. In fact, I may even buy a ticket just for pushing aside those who think he should have excised it from the film.

Chicago – James Franco gave a riveting performance in Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours” that is likely to earn one of the best actors of his generation an Academy Award nomination in a few weeks, but it wasn’t his only stellar turn in 2010. He also thoroughly delivered as the legendary poet Allen Ginsberg in the hybrid “Howl,” a film that’s part poem, part courtroom drama, and part history lesson. It doesn’t always come together but it’s worth seeing just for Franco’s work and the strength of the source material alone.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
The name of the film refers to Ginsberg’s legendary 1955 poem, one that not only inspired an increasingly important cultural movement but nearly got its author thrown in jail. Where is the full-scale filmic assault on the evils of global finance? Will Oliver Stone's Wall Street sequel be it?
As well as its import for female directors and general reassurance that the forces of right do occasionally prevail, perhaps the most enduring legacy of The Hurt Locker's Oscars landslide will be its reminder that Hollywood can actually deal with that quaint location known as the real world. Which makes it all the more glaring when other areas of it have been so conspicuous by their absence from the screen.
Call it what you like – the almost-Depression, the new economic order, the age of Lidl – but for all that we're not quite yet eating each other in unlit basements, these remain profoundly jittery times for those of us locked into the chaos created by western banks. And yet thus far, with the exception of Michael Moore's documentary(ish) Capitalism: A Love Story,...

This month's Doctor Who Magazine reveals the secrets of casting the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith. In the second part of a in-depth interview, showrunner Steven Moffat talks about how the new Tardis team were chosen; the controversial new costumes; the challenges in creating the new series of Doctor Who; and, after the auditions, why it was clear that Matt Smith had to play the title role.
It was very obvious it was him. It was just a really, really good audition. More than good acting – they were all good actors – he just had the tone of it straight away, the fun of it, the nuttiness of it… the unselfconscious nuttiness of it. Because, let’s be honest, Matt is unselfconsciously nutty. That’s what he’s like. Also in the magazine, the Watcher returns and proudly presents his definitive guide to the greatest of all the Doctor’s many foes,...

This week sees the Us release of The Road. Adapted from the Cormac McCarthynovel, it follows the story of a man and his son struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic environment. The man is played by Viggo Mortensen.
Relatively unknown before winning the role of Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he has done well to shake off the shadow of the popular series with critically acclaimed roles in films like A History of Violence. Pre-lotr his biggest part was in Young Guns II, riding alongside a pre-csi William Petersen. Then his first major supporting role, in the 1998 thriller A Perfect Murder.

The BBFC have passed a trailer for two stories, The Space Museum and The Chase, indicating that both are being lined up for a DVD release in the next few months. The stories were part of Doctor Who's second season and were first shown between April and June 1965.
They feature William Hartnell as the first Doctor along with Jacqueline Hill as Barbara Wright, William Russell as Ian Chesterton and Maureen O'Brien as Vicki, and introduce Peter Purves as new companion Steven Taylor.
The Space Museum was written by Glyn Jones and directed by Mervyn Pinfield, who as Doctor Who's first Associate Producer was responsible for many technical innovations used on the programme.
The Chase was the final story for Ian and Barbara. It sees the Daleks return in their third story for the series, which was again written by Terry Nation. Directed by Richard Martin, it also starred Hywel Bennett.
