No matter where fate propels Oliver Twist—from the workhouse to the funeral home to the hideout of a master pickpocket—the orphan maintains a fierce sense of who he is, plus a willingness to stand up for himself and, yes, even ask for more in his pursuit of a loving home. And Benjamin Pajak, the actor who plays him, is on a similarly dogged quest: a nearly one-kid glorious mission to rescue the New York City Center’s lumpy revival of Lionel Bart’s 1960 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel Oliver Twist.
If it felt like hyperbole to praise the 10-year-old playing Winthrop Paroo in the revival of The Music Man as the most electrifying performer on stage, there’s no need to pull punches now that he’s taken on a title role. Indeed, Pajak, now 12 years old, is a marvel in Oliver! For one, his...

“The guiding ideal was to honor both the origins and the aspirations of the creators,” director Lucy Moss shares about her vision for “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical.” It was born out of an online phenomenon of hundreds of TikTok creators writing songs for a hypothetical musical based on the 2007 Disney/Pixar film. Moss carefully considered how to “take this material completely seriously as a theatrical endeavor whilst also embracing the chaotic comedy and almost ironic-y tone of TikTok.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The score for “Ratatouille,” arranged by Daniel Mertzlufft and orchestrated by Macy Schmidt, has a “very traditional” Disney sound, and Moss tried to bring that magic to the screen. “I really tried to make it feel like a virtual representation of what you might have seen in a Broadway theatre,” she shares. She inventively utilized the TikTok clone filter and duet format in order to create...

“It immediately just screamed ‘end of Act II’ Disney finale,” Daniel Mertzlufft shares about the original parody song by Emily Jacobsen that sparked “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical,” which is based on the 2007 Disney/Pixar film. Mertzlufft wrote an arrangement for that piece that further fueled the viral sensation and led to the filmed special that debuted in January. Mertzlufft and Macy Schmidt helmed the project as music supervisor and music director, respectively, and Schmidt reveals, “I had 13 days to orchestrate this show for a 20-piece orchestra,” describing the project as “a scramble that required a lot of trust.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Mertzlufft also served as composer and arranger, and Schmidt the orchestrator. Together they had the challenge of making songs from at least a dozen different TikTok creators into a cohesive score.

What began as a “hey, kids, let’s put on a show!” by some ambitious TikTok users grew into a million-dollar fundraiser, kicking off 2021 with some much-needed cheer. Yes, “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” made us all forget about the headache-inducing year that passed and put a smile on our faces (even if for only a few minutes). Tituss Burgess as Remy, an average rat with very big dreams of becoming a chef. Patton Oswald voiced him in the film.
Andrew Barth Feldman as Alfredo Linguini, a young man who failed as a cook and is as kindhearted as he is clumsy. Lou Romano voiced him in the film.
Ashley Park as Colette Tatou, the only female in the male-dominated world of fine cuisine, which has made her tough and assertive.

The Grammys took a fairly expansive sweep with this morning’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, The Motown sound, Rodgers & Hammerstein, the folk-rock music of Anaïs Mitchell, the reworked radio hits of Moulin Rouge! and Imogen Heap’s Harry Potter musical suites were all represented.
But four of the five nominations did not include composers, since the music was not original to the cast albums. In the case of several, the musical numbers consist largely of oldies, some reworked for contemporary settings. Anaïs Mitchell’s previous concept album for Hadestown was already Grammy-nominated upon its release in 2010.
The nominees:
Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times Of The Temptations is a rousing recreation of the Motown sound, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on the title group’s hits. Nominated were original cast members Saint Aubyn, Derrick Baskin, James Harkness, Jawan M. Jackson, Jeremy Pope and Ephraim Sykes and...

With only a few days remaining to fret over Tony predictions, Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan joined up to discuss the musical categories, debating some of the biggest nail-biters of the awards ceremony slated for this Sunday on CBS. Watch the full video slugfest above.
In the race for Best Musical, Sam and I both think “Hadestown” will prevail, but we consider the outside possibility of an upset by “The Prom” in part because it just won the top honor at the Drama Desk Awards (“Hadestown” was not eligible in that category because it already contended for its Off-Broadway production at the 2017 ceremony). For Best Revival, we both have “Oklahoma!” besting “Kiss Me, Kate” even though this reimagined mounting of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic has been divisive. While the Drama Desk Awards nominate a slew of off-Broadway fare, the winners invariably come from Broadway. That was once again the case on Sunday when all but one of the 16 champs in the musical races were Broadway productions while it was 8 of 12 on the play side.
This love of all things Broadway even extended to “Hadestown,” which was only in contention for new elements such as cast members after having contended here previously for it Off-Broadway run. It won four awards: Director (Rachel Chavkin), Featured Actor in a Musical (Andre De Shields), Lighting Design, and Sound Design.
One of its main rivals for Best Musical at the Tony Awards is “Tootsie,” which claimed victories for Best Actor (Santino Fontana), Book, Music, and Lyrics. But it was another contender, “The Prom,” that swooped in and claimed Best Musical despite losing all of its other bids.

Two new musicals – “Hadestown” and “Ain’t Too Proud” — lead the Tony Awards nominations with 14 and 12 bids respectively. Not surprisingly, they are the frontrunners for Best Musical. Among new plays, the British import “The Ferryman” and Aaron Sorkin‘s adaptation of Harper Lee‘s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” earned nine nominations each but the latter was snubbed for the top prize. (See the full list of Tony Awards nominees.)

Who knows if Harper Lee had Oklahoma! on her mind when she came up with the fate that befalls To Kill A Mockingbird‘s villainous Bob Ewell, but after seeing Daniel Fish’s astonishing reimagining of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic musical, opening tonight on Broadway at Circle in the Square, we’d all be wise to assume nothing.
Ewell, you’ll remember from the novel, the book and Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaptation, gets his comeuppance when the reclusive Boo Radley, saving the lives of young Jem and Scout, plunges a kitchen knife into their attacker’s ribcage. Atticus and the sheriff decide fair’s fair – Bob Ewell, they’ll tell everyone, fell on his own knife.
In the original Oklahoma!, the no-account brute Jud Fry meets a similar fate. No more. In Fish’s telling, Poor Jud dies at gun point, in blood more or less cold, and the...

Director Daniel Fish’s acclaimed headed-to-Broadway production of Oklahoma! will arrive at the Circle in the Square Theatre with its much-praised Off Broadway cast largely intact, producer Eva Price announced today.
“I am delighted to welcome this incredible cast to Broadway,” Price said in a statement. “This is a group of performers rich with talent and humility. Individually, they bring incredible depth and authenticity to these iconic characters. Together, they form an ensemble that is full of humanity, spirit and inspiration.”
Though it does not boast superstar marquee names, the production found its way to numerous best-of-the-year lists following its sold out run at Brooklyn’s St. Ann’s Warehouse performance space last fall. The acclaimed production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! that sold out Brooklyn’s St. Ann’s Warehouse this fall will transfer to Broadway in March, producer Eva Price announced today.
The announcement immediately upends any Tony Award predictions – the St. Ann’s limited-run Off Broadway production was praised by critics and the Broadway staging will almost certainly be an awards contender.
Directed by Daniel Fish, Oklahoma! will begin previews at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, with an official opening on Sunday, April 7. The limited engagement will run through Sunday, Sept. 1.
“What an incredible moment to be producing on Broadway, in the middle of this wonderfully eclectic season spurred by an audience that is hungry for bold, daring work,” Price said. “Daniel Fish’s timeless and timely revival of this classic speaks so vividly to the place we as Americans are living in today.”

Having seen Mary Testa in a cabaret concert in Houston, I feel I had an idea of what to expect from her and Michael Starobin's album Have Faith. While I expected it to be eccentrically eclectic and haunting, nothing could have prepared me for how it was beautifully hypnotizing and simultaneously so unlike anything I've ever heard before. The unique album utilizes well-known pop songs hits from The Beach Boys to Alanis Morissette and songs written by William Finn and Michael John Lachiusa to explore thoughts on faith and doubt in ways that are equally alluring and unexpected.
