Ponniyin Selvan 2
Mani Ratnam’s sprawling visually plush two-part Ponniyin Selvan has ended. I say this with a sigh of relief. The downpour of plot twists and torrent of characters, all abiding by no fixed law of existence, left me exhausted, in a good way.
Where but in Mani Ratnam’s epic excursion would you get such a torrent of events. It is as though the Gods have conspired to lay bare a treasury of lost events from a time when dynasties fought their battles with the sword and didn’t mind squandering their might in a game of thorns plucked from man’s (and in this case woman’s) very basic need to possess what is rightfully not theirs.
From the cornucopia of characters it is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Nandini, the Queen designate whose hunger for power is matched by her anger at the loss of love , which stands out.

Siva Ananth, one of the producers of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus “Ponniyin Selvan: 1,” is ecstatic about the film’s rich haul of nominations at the Asian Film Awards.
The film has received a total of six nominations, including for best picture. It is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s classic Tamil-language novel.

OpinionMani Ratnam developed a new syntax for filmmaking, where along with powerful storytelling, the depiction of each frame counted. From the way scenes were staged to songs were choreographed, it was all by design and never by chance.Anand Kumar RSTamil cinema, for as long as it has existed, has been ruled by its stars. From Mgr-Sivaji and Kamal-Rajini to Ajith-Vijay now, stars in pairs have consistently held sway over the Tamil audience and the industry’s market dynamics. But even amid this, once in a while, you see the ascent of a director who makes a mark with his indelible style of filmmaking. In the years of 1960s and 70s, it was CV Sridhar who emerged as the first director whose films were sought after by filmgoers — especially the women. K Balachander would be the next, making his presence felt in the 70s and 80s, followed by Bharathiraja in the 80s and 90s.

Tamil filmmaking legend Mani Ratnam takes on the formidable task of adapting Indian bestseller “Ponniyin Selvan” as a two-part epic, the first of which released to excellent box office at home and abroad on Sept. 29. Streamlining the source material considerably, this impressive franchise starter — co-written by Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel — remains mostly faithful to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five novels, first serialized in the 1950s in the Tamil magazine Kalki before being translated into multiple other languages, including English.
The books were based on the great ruler Raja Raja Chola, who expanded his empire from modern-day Tamilnadu all the way north to the Ganges. Set to the music of Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”), “Ponniyin Selvan: Part One” boasts great battles on land and sea. The spy-vs.-spy nature of the story suggests a 12th-century Bourne movie, interspersed with song and dance.

A decision to hide from the world the real gender of the heir to the throne. Thus giving birth to hope to the people of the kingdom. From that point Rudrama Devi (Anushka Shetty) became known to the world as Rudra.
As a starting point to a story being told in a story, the idea that Marco Polo unveils the tale of Rudrama Devi to Duke Sforza of Milan as a potential solution to the Duke’s problem is an intriguing concept. One begins to wonder...

CHENNAI, India -- The much-hyped Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan's "Dasavathaaram" opened worldwide with approximately 1,000 prints and to packed houses in India, where fans anointed huge wooden cutouts of his with honey and milk. But the film turned out to be a silly spectacle in which Haasan plays 10 different characters, including a 90-plus-year-old granny. If he would have got the slightest nod from the producer or director, he might have also done Asin's dual female roles as well.
The plot is as skimpy as Mallika Sherawat's costumes. As the sidekick of ex-CIA agent Christian Fletcher (Haasan), she interprets Tamil for him as the two chase U.S.-based scientist Govind Ramasamy (Haasan) to India. He flees with a vial of a potentially deadly virus he discovers when his boss tries to sell it to an enemy. An endless cat-and-mouse game ensues during which Ramasamy meets a variety of people ranging from a Telugu intelligence officer to a Punjabi pop singer to a Dalit leader – all acted out by Haasan himself.
Barring the first 15 minutes when Haasan is brilliant as a 12th century mask-free Hindu priest fighting religious factionalism, his remaining nine present-day roles (including one of George Bush) appear unconvincing mainly because they are nothing more than caricatures. Some are positively hideous. Oscar nominated Michael Westmore's makeup of Haasan suffers from a serious flaw. The cake of mud on the actor's face may effectively disguise him, but cuts out the possibility of emoting. Even as Ramasamy, the only other time he does not wear a mask, Haasan fails. Asin as the priest's wife, Kothai, is engaging, but as Andal fleeing with Ramasamy, she is high-pitched irritation.
Computer graphics work well in some parts, but in the final Tsunami sequence they disappoint. In any case, they are no substitutes for a good script. The movie serves little else than pandering to the not entirely Novel Idea of seeing an actor perform many parts.
