The studio facilities are facing an anxious few months as crews and indie productions ponder US slowdown.
UK studios are facing a challenging few months as uncertainty about a potential rise in the rate of property taxes for facilities in England and Wales rages on, and the ongoing US writers’ and expected actors’ strikes force a slowdown in the once torrential flow of film and high-budget TV from Hollywood.
Significant business rates hikes of up to 200%-300% are being mooted as a result of increases in the rateable value of these facilities made by the UK’s Valuation Office Agency (Voa). For existing studios,...

Exclusive: Britain’s biggest film studios are preparing for crunch talks with a government agency amid fears that a so-called “studio tax” could “torpedo” the UK’s booming production industry.
Pinewood is among an informal task force of UK studios that has been working with the British Film Commission (Bfc) to avert potentially huge increases in property taxes. Representatives for the studios are due to meet with the Valuation Office Agency (Voa) this week to set out their concerns.
The Voa has redrafted UK studios’ “rateable values,” an assessment of the amount a property would rent for if it were available on the open market. Rateable values are used to calculate business rates, a tax on non-domestic properties. The higher the rateable value, the higher the business rate.
Pinewood Studios’ rateable value will increase fourfold from £3.95M to £16.2M (19.7M) under valuations set to be introduced by the Voa in April.

As the yacht drew into Port de Cannes and the camera shutters went into overdrive, it seemed from a distance that five disparate versions of Audrey Hepburn were making the grandest of entrances. Sporting the sunglasses and headscarves of 1950s starlets – variously paired with leopard-print chiffon, rainbow crop-tops and sports-branded underwear – this was a ragtag bunch of ingenues. There was an elegant one, a redheaded one, a childlike one, one who looked a bit angry about something, and one seemingly fresh from a set of mixed doubles.

Altitude has picked up international sales and UK and Irish distribution rights to Mad About the Boy — The Noël Coward Story, a feature documentary about the life of Noël Coward from Barnaby Thompson (St. Trinian’s).
The doc is billed as an exploration of Coward’s expansive career which features credits across the stage and screen, including Brief Encounter, Blithe Spirit, and Private Lives.
Adam Lambert will sing the film’s theme song, an updated cover of Coward’s 1930’s single Mad About The Boy, which will be released on 7 October. The song was produced by Amanda Ghost and Johnny Coffer.
“Noël Coward was a fascinating character. He invented the modern Englishman – witty, sophisticated, and stylish – but was born poor and left school when he was 9,” Thompson said. “He was a sex symbol who was queer in a very straight world and he was exiled from the country he came to define.

Though there have been occasions to wish he didn’t write so much of it, nobody writes dialogue quite like Quentin Tarantino. We know that because so very, very many have tried, fueling a whole subgenre of blatant “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” imitations that mercifully began subsiding around the turn of the millennium, but still pop up at least a couple times per year. What they usually have in common is a brash confidence in the wit of their snappy patter and ingenuity of their pretzeling plots — as well as frequently being dead wrong on both counts.
“Pixie” is an Irish tale, and as a result also recalls the screen work of the McDonaugh brothers in their more Tarantino-esque modes. But this collaboration between veteran producer Barnaby Thompson (whose only prior directorial features were the lead-footed “St. Trinian’s” reboots) and his writer son Preston goes beyond homage or aspirational imitation,...

Ever wondered how many pints of Guinness are drank each year? Me neither, so let’s get on with singing the praises of this wonderful crime comedy-thriller.
Pixie Hardy (Olivia Cooke) is a seemingly nice, normal girl living in a nice, normal part of Ireland. However, she’s got a drugs heist on her mind and this job’s personal. When things inevitably start to unravel, she’s forced to team-up on a road trip with Frank (Ben Hardy) and Harland (Daryl McCormack) a pair of loveable losers who are way out of their depth. And when you throw a bunch of decidedly dodgy priests into the mix, “nice, normal” goes straight out the stained-glass window.
Pixie’s strong suit is its sheer likeability. It’s poignant and somewhat gritty in places, but maintains an innocent charm throughout. As a black comedy, it would’ve also been easy to fall...

Set against the majestic backdrop of Ireland’s wild west coast, Pixie is a trigger-happy comedy road movie that relies more on boorish energy than wit or charm. Cooke shines as the title character, a wannabe art student who plans to rob drug-dealing priest Alec Baldwin of a valuable haul
Pixie is her name and trouble is her game. “She won’t just break you, she’ll take a Kalashnikov to your heart,” is the warning at the start of this hectic gangster comedy from St Trinian’s director Barnaby Thompson. It features a strong lead performance from Olivia Cooke as Pixie, the step-daughter of a smalltime gangster in the west of Ireland. She’s written as a 21st-century femme fatale, a woman who uses her brains, beauty and cunning to sucker a succession of chumpish men into helping her rob drug dealers of Mdma with a street value of €1m. Her grand plan is to run away to art school in San Francisco.

Pixie is exciting new western/thriller set against the Irish countryside, and to mark its release we took part in a virtual junket, speaking to leading cast-members Olivia Cooke, Ben Hardy and Daryl McCormack. We also had the pleasure in speaking to director Barnaby Thompson and the writer, his very own son, Preston Thompson.
We discuss this brilliantly fun movie, the well-crafted characters, and ask McCormack to recount some scary stories he told his colleagues on set. And in our second interview we discuss the collaboration between a father and a son, and how that helped benefit the project. Watch both interviews in their entirety below.

"Oh you've got a sense of humor, I like that." Paramount UK has released an official UK trailer for the crime comedy Pixie, the latest film from St Trinian's director / producer Barnaby Thompson. The name seems to possibly be a play on the manic pixie dream girl stereotype, offering a character that uses that kind of charm but is actually just another gangster. To avenge her mother's death, Pixie masterminds a heist but must flee across Ireland from gangsters, take on the patriarchy, and choose her own destiny. Olivia Cooke stars as Pixie in Pixie, with a full cast including Ben Hardy, Daryl McCormack, Alec Baldwin, Colm Meaney, Ned Dennehy, Dylan Moran, and Sebastian De Souza. This looks like it has some amusing gangster humor, along with plenty of crime antics galore. Worth a look to watch Olivia Cooke outsmarting everyone. Exclusive: Ealing Studios, the famous London studio that has housed productions including Downton Abbey and The Theory Of Everything, is to offer clients coronavirus tests to help encourage them back to work.
Ealing Studios did not close its doors during the peak of the Covid-19 crisis and is now hopeful that the three shows that were in production on its site prior to the pandemic will return to work in July.
Ealing Studios partner Barnaby Thompson said: “We’re making an on-site medic available in July and will do on-site testing for coronavirus. That’s going to be a big part of the process, and if they need them to do temperature testing as well, those facilities will be there.
“Our job is to make people feel as comfortable as possible. Ealing is a studio that is closest to the center of town, but is a relatively self-contained four-acre site.

The London-born producer and director is working on his third feature, penned by his son Preston. Filming has just begun on Barnaby Thompson’s new project, a comedic thriller entitled Pixie. This is the director’s third feature, following St Trinian’s (2007) and St Trinian’s II: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold (2009), two independent films revolving around a group of troublesome schoolgirls and based on the works of cartoonist Ronald Searle. Barnaby Thompson started his filmmaking career directing documentaries back in the late 1980s, such as the award-winning Kiss the Sky (1989). The script, penned in its entirety by Preston Thompson, follows the story of Pixie (Olivia Cooke), who seeks to avenge her mother’s death by masterminding a heist. However, her plans go awry and she finds herself on the run with two young men (Ben Hardy and Daryl McCormack), who are way out of their depth being chased across the wild.
The cast is filling out for Oscar-nominated director Barnaby Thompson’s comedic revenge thriller, Pixie. Olivia Cooke is starring in the film, alongside Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody), Daryl McCormack (Vikings), Colm Meaney (Con Air), Dylan Moran (Shaun of the Dead), and Alec Baldwin. The film is being written by Preston Thompson.
Deadline reports the following rundown for the movie:
The plot centers on Pixie (Cooke), who wants to avenge her mother’s death by masterminding a heist, but her plans go awry and she finds herself on the run with two young men who are way out of their depth being chased across the Wild Irish countryside by gangsters. She has to pit her wits against everyone, taking on the patriarchy to claim the right to shape her own life.
This is a great cast, and a cool and interesting sounding story. I love a good revenge story, and I love the setting.

It's easier to make two become one than it is to believe that Spice World came out 20 years ago today. After its U.K. release, the United States had to wait almost a month for the Spice Girls' movie to zigazig its way into theaters on this side of the pond, but it was so worth it. Because while critics might not have loved Spice World, the fans did—and the girls had a blast making the trippy comedy. "It was a really great, happy experience," Spice World producer Barnaby Thompson tells E! News exclusively. "They were very close—they were a real gang," he says of Victoria Beckham, Melanie "Mel C" Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Melanie "Mel B"...

I participated in a Dreamago panel moderated by WGA-West VP and USC film writing prof and an artistic director at the Sundance Institute Wrting Labs, Howard Rodman.
Other panelists included Vince Fischer who, having been educated and working in Paris, Montreal, New York in business and advertising, event production, and creating the endorsement agency GlamCom which initiates deals between celebrities and products, such as he did with George Clooney and Nespresso, has gone on to create Artistic Alliance Eci which represents screenwriters, directors and actors with offices in Beijing, L.a. and Paris, to match people and projects abroad. Daniel Hsia, the writer/ director of Shanghai Calling, (Isa: Aldamisa) a U.S. - China co-production distributed in China by China Film Group and in So. Korea by Sookie and due to be released in Norht America in 2013 works with Janet Yang and is eager to do more co-productions in China though he admits to difficulties with censors, etc. You can see the trailer of Shanghai Calling here.
Neil Landau who wrote Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, the 3D animated feature Tad: The Lost Explores from Paramount which is the highest grossing animated film in Spain's history and the #1 Spanish box ofice movie of the year, is now working on its sequel and another animated feature by the same director. His latest screenplay is being produced by Cary Brokaw for Avenue Pictures (The Player, Closer, Angels in America). He is curretnly developing an original miniseries for HBO for the Russian Market and a crime drama for Sreda in Moscow.
Paula Manzanedo-Schmitt is VP of Film Finances Inc. the world leader in completion guarantees. She has been involved in more than 1,000 films and TV programs internationally and in U.S. She spoke of the various cross-cultural requisites in film production abroad.
The discussion centered around whether filmmakers could make a film without the notorioius interference of studios (they should all be so lucky as to have this problem). In other words, the panelists discussed their experiences making films with Russians and Chinese. All agreed that working abroad, and especially with international sales agents who also produce allows for greater freedom of vision (although in China the reward is writng so that China censorship does not interfere because one has written to their specifications). All agreed also that there is a certain cross-cultural divide one must discover in order to work effectively.
My suggestions for finding a way to create without corporate interferences are listed below:
** Coproduce with Canada who has the most coproduction treaties in the world, or go directly to producers or sales agents who do not rely on treaties.
** Work with international sales agents who produce international coproductions which include U.S., or with the producers of those films who now have established track records.

Hungaricom Ltd (Hungary) has the English language animated comedy feature The Secret of Moonacre and Immigrants - L.A. Dolce Vita both produced by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Gabor Kalomista, a Los Angeles based company with Hungarian born principals. The synopsis of Immigrants is worth repeating: More people immigrate to America than to all other countries in the whole world combined. Why? Is it because they love hot dogs and hamburgers? Or because they want to meet Snoop Dogg or have a close encounter with Pamela Anderson? Maybe. But the real reason is – immigrants go to the U.S. to chase the American dream. Immigrants is the story of Vladislav (a Russian), and Joska (a Hungarian). Both are immigrants and best friends, living and chasing the American dream together. Vlad has a daughter, Ana, who’s adapting to life in America at the speed of light, while her dad is in complete culture shock. They stay at the Vista del Mar, an apartment complex run by an old failed actress, Greta Knight, who is always after Vlad for sexual favors. The building is home to immigrants from all over the world: Flaco, a friend from Mexico; Mr. Chea, who runs a Chinese family restaurant; Nazim, a former Pakistani nuclear scientist who drives a tour bus; and Mr. Splits, an old black pimp. We follow Vlad and Joska in their adventures… through their encounter with the American capitalist company Glut-co, through their attempt to open a Russian/Hungarian restaurant, and as their friendship is put in jeopardy when they hit the L.A. night scene. All the while Vlad is looking for a way to make a life for himself and his daughter; and Joska… well, Joska is mainly looking for women.
