Don’t expect the usual narrative arc for this surprising drama about an Olympics-aspiring swimmer navigating the choppy waters of adolescence
The talented athlete, the tough-love coach, the upcoming championship or tryout that will test the protagonist’s resolve. You know this story; you’ve seen it before. Providing any innovation in the highly templated sports movie is no easy task, but as writer-director Tyson Wade Johnston makes clear in his emotionally gripping swimming-themed coming-of-age film co-executive-produced by Ian Thorpe, the genre is evergreen so long as storytellers prioritise good drama over any achievement in the pool or on the field.
If you’re like me, you are not greatly moved by the feat of somebody shaving one hundredth of a second off another person’s freestyle record. But like in the 2016 TV adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas’ novel Barracuda, which also follows an Olympics-aspiring swimmer navigating the choppy waters of...

Olympics themed 6 x 9 web-series The Power of the Dream, created by Alexandra Keddie and Bobbie-Jean Henning, will launch this July, just in time for the games.
The comedy mockumentary follows the quest of two athletically challenged cousins trying to fulfill their Olympic dream, and was conceived when Keddie planned to attend an adult gymnastics class.
“Bobbie thought that was an absolutely terrible idea,” she told If. “Considering I have flimsy ankles and weak limbs.
“I was like ‘No, no, I was really good at gymnastics when I was in grade five and not much has changed so it’s going to be fine’.
“She said she’ll support me all the way to the Olympics, so we workshopped this idea of the coach and athlete situation.
“We were excited about the idea of what the Olympics actually looks like if we had a real, normal person trying to do these things.

Blake Northfield and Heath Davis.
Writer-director Heath Davis and Bronte Pictures’ Blake Northfield are teaming up for Blood Red Sky, a feature inspired by the Australian bushfire crisis.
The pair intends to donate 25 per cent of the film’s profits to the rural fire services in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.
Due to shoot in Nsw and Queensland late this year, the narrative will follow a motley crew of volunteer firefighters and courageous locals who must overcome their personal and political differences when a bushfire threatens their picturesque country town.
Northfield aims to raise the budget from government agencies and international partners. Greg Apps will come on board as casting director. “We have very high expectations on cast,” says the producer, whose credits include Storm Ashwood’s thrillers The School and Escape and Evasion.
Rejecting any suggestion that the public has witnessed more than enough devastation either in person or on television,...

MasterChef was third overall behind night winner Seven News on 1.523m and Sunday Night on 1.482m. However, the cooking show won the key advertising demographics, 16-39, 18-49, 25-54.
Nine’s special broadcast of a charity concert featuring the contestants of the Australian version of The Voice didn’t draw the same large numbers of The Voice itself.
Reaching Out, held last week at Melbourne’s Crown Casino screened from 6.30pm-8pm and took 1.006m, according to preliminary ratings from OzTam.
