Halcyon Studios has brought on Phil Abraham to direct and executive produce the series “Beverly Hills Noir,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Halcyon, a division of Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, is producing the show, which is based on “Gemstone” by James Ellroy. Per the official logline, the show “follows two female detectives as they are sucked into the vortex of power, greed, and cold-blooded conspiracy in one of the most aspirational cities in the world, Beverly Hills.”
Ed Decter is writing the series and will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Along with Decter and Abraham, Ellroy, Stewart Till, and Richard Potter also executive produce. No network or streaming service is currently attached to the project.
“When it comes to the greats of crime fiction, no one tackles the corruption of the American Dream quite like James Ellroy,” said Abraham. “The jewel heist that kicks off the action...

Philippa Campbell, one of the producers on “They Are Us,” a new drama about the aftermath of the Christchurch attacks on New Zealand’s Muslim community, has quit the project after a media backlash.
“I have listened to the concerns raised over recent days and I have heard the strength of people’s views. I now agree that the events of March 15, 2019, are too raw for film at this time and do not wish to be involved with a project that is causing such distress,” Campbell said in a statement.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who will be portrayed by Rose Byrne in the film, has also distanced herself from the effort.
The movie, to be written and directed by Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca”), was unveiled last week by sales company FilmNation Entertainment and CAA Media Finance. They have plans to present the project to international buyers at the upcoming Cannes virtual market.

Rose Byrne is set to star as Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, in a drama about how Ardern took action to ban assault rifles in the country following a deadly shooting against the Muslim community in 2019.
The film is called “They Are Us,” and it’s set in the week following the terrorist attack on two mosques in the city of Christchurch in which 51 people were killed and another 49 were injured. Horror heavyweight Eli Roth is best known for spine-tingling flicks like Hostel and Cabin Fever, but he’s dabbled in the world of television before. Last year, Roth executive-produced all 13 episodes of Netflix’s Hemlock Grove, a show that, despite its mixed reception, has been renewed for a second season (due to drop this July). Now, with his long-anticipated The Green Inferno primed to hit theaters in September, Roth is jumping back into the small screen for South of Hell.
Roth will direct the pilot episode of the horror thriller, which is set to premiere on We tv sometime next year. It will premiere its first scripted series, legal drama The Divide, in July.

Terry Brooks' multi-installment Shannara series, estimated to be the highest-selling un-adapted fantasy book series in the world with Brooks considered to be the second-highest-selling living fantasy author, is heading to the small screen on a very unlikely channel...
Per THR's The Live Freed, MTV is teaming with Jon Favreau and "Smallville" co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar in a development deal that comes with a straight-to-series commitment, which means that should network execs like the script, the project would bypass the traditional pilot stage.
The Shannara series first started in 1977 with The Sword of Shannara and encompasses multiple trilogies and a prequel, totaling 25 books, with Brooks most recently publishing Witch Wraith in July. Another three are due to be published in 2014. And what living legend has sold more books? Only Harry Potter's J.K. Rowling. Not bad company to be in.
Shannara takes place thousands of years after the destruction of our civilization.

The Little Film Company is to give a market premiere to Miriam Kruishoop’s Greencard Warriors at the American Film Market (Afm).
A hard-hitting drama about Latino immigrants and gang members in Los Angeles without legal papers, Greencard Warriors recently won a Best Director award at the 16th Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. The film stars Manny Perez and Vivica A. Fox.
The film’s associate producer, former PolyGram and Icon exec Stewart Till, put Dutch director Kruishoop in touch with Robbie Little earlier this summer.
The film was partly inspired by an article on non-us citizens serving in the Us army in a bid to build a brighter future for their families. The film follows Angel, an undocumented 14 year-old Latino boy struggling to stay out of trouble after his father joins the military.
Greencard Warriors was made with support from an unlikely quarter - the La-set movie received backing from the Netherlands Film Fund.

In a Variety article about how Rhi Entertainment has re-branded itself as Sonar Entertainment as hired Stewart Till as their new CEO, comes word that the company is now co-developing a new television series based on the "Hellraiser" property. Larry Kuppin, whose New World Entertainment is behind the first two films, is on board to produce. "The gap between an okay show and a great show is getting bigger and bigger and our obsession going forward will be to find high quality shows that people really want," said Till. "If you look at our slate, you'll see shows that have either a great brand name like 'King Tut' or 'Hellraiser' that arrive with a recognition, a build-in marketing platform and/or a great writer." Not much is known about the show, but it's doubtful that Clive Barker will be involved. Stay tuned.

Here's an interesting tidbit buried in a story over on Variety (thanks to DC reader Jinx for pointing it out)! Apparently there's a TV show in the works based upon the hellish antics of everyone's favorite Cenobites and their unlucky puzzle box.
After bankruptcy and the departure of its founder, Rhi Entertainment has rebranded as Sonar Entertainment and tapped Stewart Till as chief executive.
The move, announced Saturday at the MipTV market in Cannes, comes as Sonar tries to expand the scope of its production-distribution business beyond the made-fors that had been the forte of company founder Robert Halmi Sr.
Halmi exited Gotham-based Rhi in February. His son, Robert Halmi Jr., ankled as CEO last July, when Till was tapped as co-interim CEO along with Mike Corrigan and David Salzman.
"Rebranding as Sonar Entertainment represents a fresh start and a solid business strategy for growth and expansion," said Sonar chairman Gabriel de Alba.

Ukrainian-born billionaire industrialist Len Blavatnik has kicked the tires of many movie companies in recent years. His privately held U.S.-based Access Industries was the backer of Stewart Till's 2009 purchase of Icon UK film and entertainment business from then owners Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey. You also may recall that "The Russian" (though his flack Mike Sitrick hates it when I refer to the Harvard-educated naturalized American citizen as such) was one of the bidders for MGM but only wanted to make a recapitalization/restructuring offer, meaning that it wasn't an all-cash offer as requested by the investment bankers. Then again, Blavatnik loves a distressed property he can own or invest in at a bargain, which is how he amassed his global conglomerate of industrial, chemical, real estate, and media properties. He already was an investor in Warner Music Group and you can't get more distressed than the recording industry these days.

As part of a multi-year agreement unveiled Thursday, D Films will start releasing five to six Icon titles annually, before increasing the number to six to eight films a year.
And Till, who worked with Iwai at PolyGram and Signpost, will join the board of D Films as the Toronto-based boutique distributor raises its game in the local market with the Icon deal.
"Darryl and Jim (Sherry's) track record as premier film executives will ensure that D Films will quickly become a significant and impressive distributor in Canada. We are very happy to entrust our films to them," Till said in a statement.

Toronto -- Canadian indie distributor D Films has named veteran distribution executive Darryl Iwai as chairman of the board of directors.
Iwai was president of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment Canada from 1994 until 2000, when the company was acquired by Seagrams and then ultimately Universal Studios.
He next did a short stint as president of worldwide distribution for Stewart Till's London-based Signpost Films, which had backing from a Canadian investment group, before more recently becoming a shareholder and board member of Kti Limited and Fountain Hills Investments Ltd., private equity players in the energy and real estate sectors.
During his PolyGram tenure, Iwai faced a diplomatic flap between Canada and the European Union over whether then Dutch-based PolyGram could release non-proprietary movies into the Canadian market.

Since 1997, this government has invested £665m into the British film industry through the UK Film Council and has provided, thanks to the new UK film tax relief, further significant financial support for the production of UK films (My election, 28 April). Economically, the results have been very impressive. The turnover of the UK film industry (inflation adjusted) has risen by 50% – up from £4.53bn in 1997 to £6.79bn in 2009. The film industry's contribution to Gdp has increased by 82% – from £1.7bn in 1997 to £3.1bn in 2008.
