It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.
Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

There’s a kind of shaggy glory to Evil Dead: Sam Raimi’s demonic scary movie series spawned from the writer/director’s triumphant indie horror marvel from 1981. Starring childhood friend Bruce Campbell and shot in the Tennessee wilderness with next to no budget, the inaugural outing with Raimi’s Necronomicon (aka Book of the Dead) and its flesh-ripping Deadites — also known by the original film’s title, “The Evil Dead” — established a formula for four more films with immeasurable influence on skin-peeling, tendon-snapping, chainsaw-revving pop culture as we know it.
The first film sees final guy Ash Williams (Campbell), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), and friends Scott (Richard DeManincor) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) heading out for a stay at a remote cabin. Once there, a cursed book and tape summons a demonic presence that slowly begins to feast on the souls of the unlucky travelers one by one.

Ten years ago, the characters in Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead were cleverly given first names that allowed the first letters of each of their names to spell out Demon – David, Eric, Mia, Olivia, Natalie – and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise has similarly hidden some Easter Eggs within the characters’ names. Every character in the new movie is named after a past Evil Dead star!
Here’s the full main character roster, and the stars their names pay tribute to…
Actor/Character: Lily Sullivan – Beth

The Evil Dead franchise has long been a female-forward horror franchise, even with Bruce Campbell typically leading the charge. Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly from Sam Raimi’s original The Evil Dead have been collectively dubbed “The Ladies of The Evil Dead,” and 2013’s remake of course gave us a new franchise icon in Jane Levy’s Mia.
This year’s new movie Evil Dead Rise brings Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan into the mix as the latest ladies of The Evil Dead, and Sutherland just shared a pretty awesome photo over on Twitter this past weekend. Sutherland and Sullivan recently got together with remake star Jane Levy, the trio taking a photo together as the latest “Evil Dead blood sisters.”

Just last month, Evil Dead: The Game was updated to add the characters of Mia and David Allen from the 2013 Evil Dead movie. This month, it’s going to receiving the “Hail to the King” update – and it’s quite appropriate that the update is named after a line from Army of Darkness, because it involves the addition of an Army of Darkness-inspired single player mission and a character from Army of Darkness!
The new single player mission has the following description: “Castle Kandar’s Witch has opened a rift in time and space. Henry the Red must put her to the sword to save mankind.“
The Army of Darkness character who is being added to the game is The Blacksmith. In the film, the Blacksmith was played by Timothy Patrick Quill, who unfortunately passed away last year at the age of 63. It’s a nice tribute to Quill that...

Last month, the developers of Evil Dead: The Game announced that the character Mia Allen, who was played by Jane Levy in the 2013 Evil Dead, will be added to the game as a playable character on September 8th. Now more details on the game’s versions of these characters have been revealed!
Here’s the information on Mia: “All that anger, all that terror – now, she’s learned how to use them. Her abilities include converting her own fear into damage and complete resistance to demon possession.”
And here’s the information on David, whose arrival in the game coincides with the arrival of a new weapon, the nail gun: “Whatever it takes, David will be there until the end. His team-boosting...

"There's not a day goes by that I don't think about it." DiggerFilms has debuted an official trailer for the documentary film Hail to the Deadites, another doc film about (horror) movie fans and their love for a particular franchise. From filmmaker Steve Villeneuve, Hail to the Deadites is a documentary about the fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films and explores the classic franchise's undying and ever-growing popularity. Beside meeting with fans around the world, the 80 minutes documentary feature interviews with Evil Dead franchise cast members such as Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Betsy Baker, Theresa Tilly, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Tom Sullivan, Dan Hicks, Kassie Wesley DePaiva, Sarah Berry, Rick Domeier & Bill Moseley. Evil Dead first opened in 1981, followed by the sequel / remake Evil Dead II in 1987, finishing the trilogy with Army of Darkness in 1992. All three are official cult classics in their own way, and they still rule.

In my previous Fantasia review for Clapboard Jungle, I discussed how I’m pretty much an easy mark for any and all genre-related documentaries. After seeing Hail to the Deadites though, I feel like I need to amend that statement a bit as I’ve come to realize that, while I adore documentaries as a whole, fan documentaries aren’t exactly my cup of tea. I was hoping that Hail to the Deadites might turn me around when it comes to my feelings on fan docs as a whole, but rather, it ended up just leaving me feeling a bit blasé about the whole thing in the end.

There are horror franchises out there that are so beloved and have such a devoted and undyingly-passionate fanbase that they become legendary. The Evil Dead films are an example of this, their popularity still reaching incredible heights today. This documentary, directed by Steve Villeneive (Under the Scares) looks at those aforementioned fans and the admiration they have and the importance they hold towards the films themselves.
I am personally a big fan of the Evil Dead franchise, including the most recent 2013 entry, the first three classics, and the television show, Ash vs Evil Dead. “Thank you. I don’t know what I would have done if I had remained on those hot coals, burning my pretty flesh!”
The Evil Dead screens midnights this weekend (October 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo). Admission is only $5. Come early for great drink specials, cool trivia with even cooler prizes.
Sam Raimi’s classic horror-comedy The Evil Dead still holds up after almost 35 years. Even though the plot may now sound very clichéd, and it probably did in 1981 too, it never hinders the fun of horror: A group of five friends, Ash, Cheryl, Scotty, Linda and Shelly (played by Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManincor, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly respectively) drive to a remote forest cabin for a fun weekend but their plans are quickly put on hold by the presence of sinister forces from the unknown. Remake of Raimi's early '80s cult classic (and minor box-office performer) to easily surpass Jurassic Park 3D rerelease to land at the top of the domestic chart This past weekend, the no. 1 release at the Us/Canada -- actually, around the world -- box office was the widely panned 3D-converted sequel of a widely panned flick based on a toy. This weekend (April 6-8), in addition to the 3D toy-movie sequel mentioned above, two of the other top four movies on the domestic b.o. chart will be the remake of a bloody cult classic and the 3D-converted relaunch of a 1993 horror blockbuster. As the old saying goes, moviegoers are eager, thirsty, yearning for fresh, original content. That surely helps to explain why the brought-back-to-life Evil Dead will be this early April weekend's top film, likely to be followed by (toy movie sequel) G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the animated The Croods,...

February is Women in Horror Month, a 28-day celebration of our favorite genre gals. Ladies have long been a staple of the horror genre, from “final girls” like Jamie Lee Curtis and Ashley Laurence, to the homicidal maniacs themselves. This list is dedicated to the latter with ten of the scariest, nastiest, downright craziest women to ever grace the big screen.
***Warning: Possible Spoilers Throughout***
10. Julia Cotton, Hellraiser
She starts out as a cold stepmother and bored housewife, but Julia soon transforms into a hammer-wielding psycho at the persistence of her husband’s skinless, undead brother Frank, with whom she is in love. She is indifferent to murdering the strange men she lures home, and what’s worse, her and Frank seem to get off on it. They are a match made in Hell, literally. Clare Higgins brings the perfect combination of classy and crazy to the role. Even the...

A unique event - a convention centered solely on the undead and “zombie culture” - took place here in the Emerald City. Organized by promoter Ryan Reiter (of “Red, White, and Dead” fame), this was an undertaking the size of which would have been bold for even an already established convention. For a first-time con, the scope of it was impressive, to say the least.
The guest list alone was one that would cause most promoters to lay awake at night fitfully worrying over logistics: George Romero, Bruce Campbell, Malcolm McDowell, Chuck Palahniuk (author, Fight Club), Max Brooks (author, World War Z), John Amplas (Martin, Day Of The Dead), Terry Alexander (Day Of The Dead), Scott Reiniger (Dawn Of The Dead) Ted Raimi (Spider-man), The Ladies of The Evil Dead (Theresa Tilly, Betsy Baker, Ellen Sandweiss), Danny Hicks (Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn), Timothy Patrick Quill (Army Of Darkness), the Zombie Research Society,...

Zombies. I love ‘em. You love ‘em. From the looks of most media, everybody loves ‘em. Long considered the drunken, famished, and wholly unruly guests at the Horror Party, they’re appearing in everything from books, movies, videogames, even commercials and a Halloween-themed Sears web site. This year however, there’s a new venue in town: ZomBCon.
ZomBCon is a “convention of the living dead” happening in Seattle, Wa and horror sites and mainstream news outlets are buzzing about it. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was kind enough to send us a review copy of the Blu-ray release of “The Evil Dead” written and directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Drag Me To Hell) and produced by Robert G. Its cast features Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness), Ellen Sandweiss (My Name is Bruce), Hal Delrich (Crimewave), Betsy Baker (TV’s “Southland”, “E.R.”) and Sarah York (TV’s “Dangerous Women”). Five Michigan State University students venture into the hills to spend a weekend at an isolated cabin. Actress Ellen Sandweiss got in touch with some comments on Dangerous Women, the on-line series that reunites her with fellow Ladies of The Evil Dead Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly. We first reported on the Strike.TV show here; you can see the just-posted second episode below the cut.
Dangerous Women, which stars the trio as suburban housewives dealing with typical family issues as well as their own evil doubles, got its start when Sandweiss acted in writer/producer David O’Malley’s still-unreleased feature The Dread a few years back. “We became good friends,” she tells us, “and David really wanted to write something to feature the Ladies of The Evil Dead. At first it was going to be a feature film, but when the Writers Guild strike was going on and word got out about the formation of Strike.TV, he decided that a web series for the...

A busy January continues for Strike.TV with the debut of two more shows, both a bit off the beaten path of standard web fare. Dangerous Women, which premiered January 22nd, and Fusion, debuting today, both take up residence far away from three-minute comedy sketches and twenty-something angst. Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly, the three female leads from Sam Raimi's 1981 camp-horror classic The Evil Dead, star in Dangerous Women as suburban housewives, though despite a long voice-over introduction in episode one, this trio seems to live a long way from Wisteria Lane. The first episode is nearly all expository information, until a shadowy figure is seen behind Sandweiss in the final scene. The multi-genre series from writer-producer David O'Malley and director Lee Miller claims to be "part hyper-drama, with tantalizing doses of horror, suspense, satire, soap opera, fantasy and even sci-fi." Fusion, meanwhile, sets up an X-Files-like...

The online video resurrection of things 80s isn’t only relegated to Fox television sitcom stars, MTV anchors, and Super Mario characters. With the launch of Strike.TV’s Dangerous Women, the phenomenon now encompasses the female actors that played (dismembered) hormonal teenagers that unwittingly unleashed hell via cassette recording in a remote cabin in the woods of Tennessee. Kinda, sorta, but not really reprising their roles from Sam Raimi’s cult classic The Evil Dead, Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker, and Theresa Tilly play Cheryl, Linda, and Shelly (Fangoria readers will chuckle after quickly realizing those are the same names of their Evil Dead characters). The three are menopausal, suburban house moms afflicted with an American Beauty malaise of middle age and weariness of the same old routine. And, of course, they’re all cursed with a “sadistically evil” doppelganger (queue the screams and dramatic music!). Instead of curing the...

Ellen Sandweiss, one of the three original “Ladies of The Evil Dead,” shot us the news that the trio have a new project ready to debut. Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly (a.k.a. Sarah York) are starring in a web series called Dangerous Women.
Directed by Lee Miller and written by David O’Malley, whose credits also include The Boogens and Fatal Instinct and who teamed with the Evil Dead gang on the female-biker flick Easy Wheels, Dangerous Women (premiering next Thursday, January 22 on Strike.TV with the “Heart in a Jar” webisode) casts the trio—using their real names—as suburban moms. In addition to handling the usual trials of raising kids and running households, they also have to contend with their own evil doppelgangers. “When we saw the script for Dangerous Women, it seemed natural that the ‘Ladies of The Evil Dead’ should reunite for the show,...
