How will the under-appreciated Connie Britton break out of the pack this season and secure an Emmy over two-time winner Glenn Close? Does Mariska Hargitay have a prayer against Julianna Margulies and her work on CBS’ white-hot The Good Wife? We found out which episodes the actresses — and supporting ones — are submitting for consideration. And in case you’ve forgotten how winners are selected, nominees send their episodes to a select group of TV Academy members who have volunteered to screen the submissions at home. (Nope, we never learn the identities of these mysterious, blue-ribbon panelists.) Ballots are due back to Ernst & Young by Aug.

This week's episode of Damages ("All That Crap About Your Family"), written by Daniel Zelman and directed by Matthew Penn, found each of the characters grappling with the truth, whether that be a personal discovery, a bitter confrontation, a shocking confession, or the decision to withhold information from a loved one. The latter offered one of the most shocking moments in this week's installment, a pivotal turning point for a supporting character who seemed to be far more benevolent than they actually are. Additionally, we learned the truth about what happened that Thanksgiving night and how the smallest of moments can have a ripple effect on everyone around them. Louis Tobin's decision to entrust his fortune's future to Tessa Marchetti hasn't quite panned out the way he thought it would. Trust is, after all, a funny thing. The same holds true for Ellen and Patty. Their relationship this season...

Well, my goodness. Louis Tobin's Ponzi scheme seems like small potatoes now, doesn't it? Joe Tobin was worried about having to live out his father's crime-ridden legacy? No worries on that; Joe's creating his own twisted legacy all by himself.
And Marilyn Tobin - gack! She's willing to waste her own granddaughter for the sake of what? A few bucks? 'All That Crap About Your Family' is a great title for this episode.

"Damages" introduced the shadowy figure of Stuart Zedeck (Dominic Chianese) this week, and he quickly became a thorn in Joe Tobin's (Campbell Scott) side as Joe continued trying to untangle the web of his late father's fraud.
Not that Joe was any picnic to deal with either, as he clearly didn't get the gestures Zedeck made toward him. "Joe doesn't pick up on it," as Chianese put it in the show's weekly morning-after conference call.
Chianese and "Damages" co-creator Todd Kessler -- who worked together on "The Sopranos" -- talked about Zedeck's motivations, "Damages" going abroad next week and more. Highlights from the conversation.
Stuart Zedeck: Not just a dry cleaner
Chianese: [Zedeck] is a neighborhood kind of character for me. ... He's going to push the plot. I can't give anything away -- I wouldn't want to take any of the entertainment value out of this, but he's definitely a loyal person.

"Follow the money." Whistleblower Deep Throat suggested that tack to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to do just that in the 1976 film All the President's Men, based on the Watergate scandal that eventually took down Richard Nixon. The same applies to the twisted Ponzi scheme enacted by financier Louis Tobin this season on Damages but Tobin has hidden his money trail rather cleverly. So well in fact that rottweiler attorney Patty Hewes and her crack team of investigators are no closer to uncovering his fortune's whereabouts than they were when the season began, a fact that leaves Patty's position as the court-appointed trustee in the case in serious jeopardy. This week's episode of Damages ("Don't Forget to Thank Mr. Zedeck"), written by Aaron Zelman and Mark Fish and directed by Timothy Busfield, may have lacked the jaw-dropping plot twists of last week's stunning episode but that doesn't mean that we...

The fifth episode of "Damages'" third season offered more clues about Tom Shayes' death, some weird and disturbing images from the mind of Patty Hewes and our first extended look at Lily Tomlin as Marilyn Tobin, wife of the now-dead investment fraudster Louis Tobin (Len Cariou).
Tomlin, who joined "Damages" creators Todd and Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman on the show's weekly day-after conference call, is a huge fan of the show and sys it "wouldn't have mattered" what role the Kesslers and Zelman had written for her, so long as she got to be part of the show. She and the guys talked about Marilyn's motives, what she might be hiding and what we can expect to see from her later in the season.
Would Marilyn do anything to protect her family?
Tomlin: Possibly. Protecting her family is important, certainly. It's probably her main motivator. How far she'd go,...

Episodes of "Damages" have a habit of dropping big revelations in their minutes. The bomb this time was suicide of Louis Tobin (Len Cariou), who took his own life rather than spend the rest of it in prison after running a massive investment fraud.
Cariou and co-creator Todd Kessler talked about the development, the show's "Godfather" inspirations and how Louis Tobin will continue to be a part of the show in a conference call Tuesday (Feb. 16).
More to come
Kessler: "We were absolutely thrilled with Len's performance, and we still are thrilled with Len's performance, which means that yes, we will be seeing more of the character. ... What happened on Thanksgiving, which is the day Louis Tobin confessed [his massive securities fraud] to his family, we'll return to throughout the rest of the season. So Louis Tobin will live in flashbacks from Thanksgiving."
Cariou: [Laughs] "This is nice news for me."

Tom Shayes is dead and someone killed him. But this is why it's been an outstanding season of Damages so far:
That's not even the most fascinating storyline on the show!
Granted, that might have something to do with the fact that Tom has always seemed like a very nice, loyal guy - but has never really been fleshed out enough for us to care a lot about him. But it also has a lot to do with everything else going on.
Even the smaller plot developments are keeping us interested. On "Don't Throw That at the Chicken," we met with Michael for the first time in awhile and came away with nothing but questions: Why is he lying to his mother? Is there an actual agenda here, or does he just like being dishonest to a woman he knows is so manipulative?
That's a constant, fascinating theme of the season: by now,...

"Damages" shook up its usual format in the season's third episode by sticking with one time frame -- and a rather brief one at that. The episode picked up right where the previous one had left off, and instead of jumping back and forth in time, it focused on a single evening in which all the show's interested parties had a stake.
Among those parties: Joe Tobin (Campbell Scott), who had accidentally hit his father's mistress, Danielle Marchetti (Madchen Amick), with his car in the previous episode and struggled with what to do afterward: Take her to a hospital, where Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) would very likely find her and use her in her case against Tobin's father, or take her to her previously planned flight out of the country, thereby risking greater injury or even death for her?
Needless to say, it's not a good time to be Joe Tobin...

For those of us who grew up making The Three Amigos gesture with our friends, it's unsettling to watch Martin Short on Damages. He plays a serious, shady, devious lawyer on the FX drama.
It's also refreshing, as the actor takes on a role few would have pegged him for. However, Short thinks anyone shocked to see him as Leonard Winstone is simply misguided.
"Actors are just actors," he told TV Guide. "Whether they're making you laugh or making you frown, there's a talent to make a character three-dimensional and sympathetic. It's just different objectives. People have typecasting in their heads of how they think so-and-so can make them laugh, but can't make them cry."
What can Short reveal about his character? A few excerpts from the interview...

As the award-winning FX drama Damages enters its third season, I spoke with creators Todd Kessler, Glenn Kessler, and Daniel Zelman about the show that has pulses racing and adoring critics wondering where the viewers are. Evgenia Peretz: This season, the drama hangs off the story of Louis Tobin, who’s obviously based on Bernie Madoff. Was this a no-brainer for you guys? Todd Kessler: While the financial crisis was first shaking the world, we were basically in the dark tunnel of season two, so after the season ended we all started reading and catching up on our lives and current events. The stories that emerged in the Madoff and [fellow Ponzi schemer] Mark Dreier cases felt like it was this tremendous drama because you would never really get to the truth. That’s something that has really fed our desire in this show. Patty Hewes [Glenn Close] is driving after the truth, but...

We devote quite a bit of copy to almost all of the best dramas currently airing on American television: "Dexter," "Mad Men," "Lost," "Friday Night Lights," "Big Love," "Breaking Bad," and even "Sons of Anarchy" (which will be far more discussed in future seasons, as I just finally got around to watching the first two, and was thoroughly blown away). One show that's fell a bit under the radar around here has been F/X's brilliant "Damages." Truth be told, in my quest to watch at least one season of every Emmy-nominated drama of the last 15 years, "Damages" was inexplicably last in line.
I finally completed that task a few days ago, having banged out the first two seasons of "Damages" in under two weeks, a little ashamed of myself for waiting so long to get around to it. "Damages" is a superb drama -- it's not only wildly addictive,...

Damages returned to FX this week, as confusing, suspenseful and absorbing as ever.
After two seasons of dealing with one shady client, Patty now has her sights set on an entire family, which just means there are more mysteries to unravel and more shady characters to question. Perhaps it's the Arrested Development fan in me, but I love this. I'm a sucker for interesting family units, despite the subtle differences between the Tobins and the Bluths.
Read a detailed recap of the intricate season three premiere now.
In just one hour, it carved out a fascinating new case that goes far beyond Lou Tobin as the show's fictional Bernie Madoff. His wife, played brilliantly by Lily Tomlin, seems to possess more secrets than her husband, doesn't she?
Son Joseph appears to be on the level, but can you ever really tell on Damages? We can only hope to learn more about wife Rachel,...

(S03E01) "Do you think this could have been done to you on purpose?" - Det. Vic Huntley
Patty Hewes for the people? No way. In tonight's season three premiere of Damages, Patty (Glenn Close) may have been appointed by the government to recover billions of stolen assets from scheming financier Louis Tobin (Len Cariou), but let's be honest here -- this is Patty Hewes.
When her name is on the line, you better believe that's all that matters. She's set on finding all that money, but it's to make her look good and has nothing to do with the welfare of Tobin's thousands of victims. With a stellar record as of late (Frobisher and Unr), losing this battle would be a huge blow to Patty's public image. So, knowing all that, what do you think about Det. Huntley's question now? Could someone have tried to kill Patty on purpose?...

Bernie Madoff may be safely tucked away in a Butner, Nc federal prison for over a hundred years, but that does not mean that he is safe from Glenn Close. In tonight's third season premiere of Damages, Close's brilliant-yet-savage litigator Patty Hewes is responsible for recovering the assets from Madoff's nearly identical cable avatar, Louis Tobin (Len Cariou), who was just arrested for the largest securities fraud in history.

Chicago – The second season of ‘Damages,’ recently released on DVD, was still quality television but felt like a bit of a letdown after the spectacular first season of this amazing show. Naturally, expectations are high for the premiere of season three. Will the show return to peak form, stabilize, or continue to slide? For now, it’s a hung jury.
Television Rating: 4.0/5.0
In its third year, the structure of “Damages” is familiar (and maybe too much so) - one large case throughout a season told in a chronologically jumping style, opening with a shocking moment and then working back and forth through time so the end of the season explains just how we got there. The first season featured a bloodied Rose Byrne running from an apartment building and the second her character shooting someone.

Damages comes back tonight! Woohoo! The rich, suspenseful legal thriller is one of my favorites, and not just because Glenn Close kicks so much ass as queen bee (and bee-yotch) Patty Hewes. Also because Damages has the best, most against-type supporting cast. Ted Danson's performance as bad guy Arthur Frobisher is one of my favorite TV surprises ever -- I never expected Sam Malone to be such a perfectly nuanced villain. Darrell Hammond's creepy assassin dude was another interesting departure, and William Hurt's slippery scientist had me guessing all season long. This time we're in for some more A-listers,...
