A top digital audio workstation, a robotic camera system and the crowd animation software used in New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy are among the nine innovations being recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences technical awards committee. Devices submitted for the Sci-Tech Oscars are only considered "if they have a proven track record showcasing successful and repeated use in the film industry," said Rich Miller, the Academy's awards administrations director. Recipients of the Academy Award of Merit include Digidesign for the development of the ProTools digital audio workstation that has become "the worldwide standard for the creation and editing of motion picture soundtracks." Bill Tondreau, a developer of robotic camera systems, also has been earmarked for an Oscar because of his efforts in encouraging motion control in becoming "a core technology that has supported the renaissance of visual effects."...
