Liam Neeson stars as “Alex Lewis” in director Martin Campbell’s Memory, an Open Road Films / Briarcliff Entertainment release. Credit: Rico Torres | Open Road Films / Briarcliff Entertainment
Adapting an old comic line: of all the Liam Neeson action/revenge/rescue movies Memory is the most … recent. Neeson plays Alex Lewis, a hit man with scruples (again), seeking retirement (again) from his craft. But he’s forced into one more job (again) that goes awry (again) putting the target on his back (again). One of the reasons for his attempt to quit is awareness that the same dementia that has already deprived his brother of all awareness is starting that downward spiral for him. The complication that drives this tired plot is his refusal to whack a child, and his anger at those who did.
Guy Pearce supports the effort as FBI agent Vincent Serra, frustrated by constraints from his superiors...

Television reimaginings of classic tales have made for some wonderfully engaging entertainment (going back to Syfy efforts Tin Man and Alice, which were surprisingly fun) but Emerald City moves to a new level as Tarsem Singh returns to the form he hasn’t quite managed since The Fall.
The warning that should come on the tin is that audiences shouldn’t go into this expecting anything like a “retelling” of The Wizard of Oz. It would be nearly impossible to give a clear idea of what’s happened to L. Frank Baum’s works here, but it isn’t just modernized, but dipped in the grime of reality, and subjected to an absolutely unfettered imagination. It covers elements of the first three books (and perhaps beyond… it’s been a while), but is “inspired by” in the broadest sense. Some characters in this effort are an amalgamation of two characters in the books,...

Los Angeles – Director Tony Scott, the high octane helmsman of “Top Gun” (1986), “True Romance” (1993), “Enemy of the State” (1998) and the recent “Unstoppable” (2010), died on Sunday of an apparent suicide. Los Angeles officials say that Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California. He was 68.
Tony Scott directed many of best action movies of the 1980s and ‘90s, putting memorable spins on genres such as military, car racing, thrillers, spy and disaster movies. Admirers constantly reference dialogue from his unforgettable “True Romance,” and the pulse of his most notable films was rapid and elemental. He worked with actors as diverse as Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro, Kevin Costner, Bruce Willis, Eddie Murphy, James Gandofini, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Susan Sarandon, John Travolta and Dennis Hopper.

HollywoodNews.com: If you have ever wondered about Giovanni Ribisi’s acting ability and his finesse for flawlessly absorbing edgy personalities onscreen, know that he’s been practicing the craft since the age of nine. This Friday, Ribisi stars in George Gallo’s crime comedy “Middle Men” as Wayne Beering, a coke-fueled, brilliant and reckless guy who hits the jackpot when he creates a subscriber based porno website at the onset of the internet age. However, success becomes far too much for Beering to handle. What makes Ribisi’s comedic-dramatic portrayal of Beering phenomenal is that it is unlike any other character on his resume, and that’s a talent Ribisi is known for: He never duplicates his performance from one character to the next; each stands alone. Ribisi will star next for George Gallo in “Columbus Circle” and will appear alongside Johnny Depp in the...

Chicago – Good films deliver on their promise. Great films up the ante even more. In this version of the long “Predators” franchise from director Nimrod Antal (“Control,” “Armored,” “Vacancy”) and more-known producer Robert Rodriguez (“Grindhouse,” “Sin City”), we merely see more of the same: just enough to get us by but not nearly enough to make us care.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The curiously cast film stars the I’m-trying-to-be-badass Brody as he attempts to fill the more authentic shoes of Arnold Schwarzenegger from 1987’s “Predator”.
The battle-hardened and mercenary-turned Brody is self-elected as the team leader of the humans as they wage war against alien predators out of necessity. While the humans are fighting for their lives, the predators are simply butchering for sport. The aliens merely want to improve their abilities as the harbringers of death and they use humans as their guinea pigs.

Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – Tony Scott’s remake of “The Taking of Pelham 123,” starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta, is likely to meet sun-drained audience expectations for a straight-forward, adult-driven action film this season but the overly stylized and not-so-thrilling train ride is ultimately merely average at best and will disappoint fans looking for anything more.
The opportunity to make something “just not bad” out of the very well-liked “The Taking of Pelham 123” was definitely missed but there are elements of the film - mostly in the performances of Washington and Travolta and some of the choices made by screenwriter Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) - that undeniably do work and adults looking for non-sequel action are likely to be satisfied by what this train delivers.
