The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

One of my favorite films to play Fantastic Fest 2011 was Jaume Balaguero's Sleep Tight, the creepy thrilller from the co-director of Rec and Rec 2. Many months later, I'm happy to report that the Spanish import is coming to the U.S.
Mpi Media Group has acquired the rights to release the film and will do so through Dark Sky Films. Alberto Marini scripted Sleep Tight which stars Luis Tosar, Marta Etura, Alberto San Juan and Pep Tosar.
A fall release is being planned. Head inside for a synopsis and English-subbed trailer.

Sleep Tight Trailer, Mientras Duermes Trailer. Jaume Balaguero‘s Sleep Tight / Mientras Duermes (2011) movie trailer stars Luis Tosar, Marta Etura, Alberto San Juan, Tony Corvillo, and Pep Tosar. Sleep Tight‘s plot synopsis: “Cesar works as a doorman in a Barcelona apartment building. Happiness eludes him and he feels the need to reaffirm his reasons for living on a daily basis. He goes about his day to day work mainly unnoticed by the residents of the building, but he pays close attention to them. He knows all the intimate details of their lives, everything about them, especially one of them.
Clara is a happy-go-lucky young woman, who always looks on the positive side of things. Her cheery attitude to life makes Cesar’ skin crawl. He won’t be happy until he has wiped that smile of her face once and for all, because Cesar feeds off other people’s pain.

Aftermath (1994) is a gore-driven short horror film written and directed by Nacho Cerda and stars Xevi Collellmir, Jordi Tarrida, Angel Tarris, and Pep Tosar. From Spain, the movie has no dialogue, only Motzart’s hauntingly beautiful Requiem playing over the piece.
The movie takes place in a morgue where two medical examiners manhandle corpses with about as much respect as a serial killer has for his victims. They unceremoniously toss removed organs back into the gaping chest cavity and then on to the next one. One night one of the MEs stays late and while alone grotesquely fondles the bodies as he cuts them to pieces. He discovers the corpse of a female car accident victim and does a lot more than just fondle. Sexually aroused by the mutilated corpse, the examiner violently rapes the girl’s body, both with his surgical instruments and himself,...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.
