One of the central themes of Naomi Alderman’s 2016 novel The Power is how, sometimes, systems have to be completely rebooted in order for them to work the way they’re supposed to.
Similarly, when Raelle Tucker joined Prime Video’s adaptation of the book a few years ago, the sci-fi series’ entire first season had already been shot… yet was nowhere near ready for public consumption. Tucker’s arrival as showrunner equaled a reset.

At first glance, The Power may seem like a superhero story crossed with The Handmaid’s Tale, but it is so much more than that. Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, The Power is an epic story about not just women who are imbued with a mysterious new ability but also how the structure of control and hierarchy of our world shifts because of this change.
The Power posits what it would be like if teenage girls across the globe suddenly manifested the ability to harness electricity through their bodies. Some fear the power, while others embrace what it means for those subjugated because of their gender. In a global tale set in various countries, The Power shows us how fear changes the perspective of men, women, and those who identify with a different sex. Sometimes funny, often dramatic, and always shocking, The Power is a commentary on our...

“The Power” has arrived on Prime Video, and it marks a somewhat rare occurrence on television: a show about and for women, directed almost entirely by women. Naturally, that was pretty appealing to the women in it — but also to some of the men.
The series, adapted from Naomi Alderman’s 2016 book of the same name, follows multiple women all around the world, as they all begin to develop a new organ in their body that allows them to not only control but expel electricity at will. It is powerful, it awakens in adolescence, and it is only found in women.
Naturally, the power dynamics of the world are immediately shifted. Young women feel emboldened, and truly safe for the first time in their existence. But, if you’re thinking this is a superhero-esque series, you’d be a bit off. In fact, that the series is not about superheroics...

The Power, from showrunner Raelle Tucker (True Blood) and filmmakers Sister (Chernobyl), has finally arrived on Prime Video. In the nine-episode sci-fi series, teen girls worldwide develop organs that imbue them with their new abilities, changing the lives of everyone in Seattle in the process. Mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez, played by Toni Collette, is the mother to one of the teens, Jos (Auli’i Cravalho). She and her husband, Rob (John Leguizamo), try to help their daughter, but Margot being the mayor of Seattle adds a complicated layer to their situation. A revolution sparks when the government tries to control the suddenly electrifying girls. During the official series premiere in New York, TV Insider caught up with the ensemble cast on the carpet, including Leguizamo, Collette, Cravalho, and Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso), to talk about what they’re excited for fans of the book to see in the show. “I think they...

Toni Collette felt like she was “imploding” while filming The Power, after joining the dystopian series following a last minute recasting.
Based on Naomi Alderman’s hit novel, the Prime Video series imagines a world where women receive electric power in their fingertips when they become teenagers.

Hereditary star Collette plays mayor of Seattle Margot, a role she took over from Leslie Mann at the last minute, leaving her with just five weeks to shoot all nine episodes.
“I felt like I was hanging on the edge of a cliff,” she told Insider while discussing the intense shooting schedule.
“I had so much dialogue and it’s such an epic story. The rest of it had been shot, and it was just all on me, all the time. There was nothing else to shoot, so I felt like I was drowning.”

This The Power review contains no spoilers.
Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely etc. etc., but not (yet) in Prime Video‘s excellent adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s 2016 best selling work of speculative fiction. The novel, developed with help from a mentorship with Margaret Atwood, imagines what would happen if teenage girls suddenly developed the ability to produce electrical charges through their fingers.
The series takes this premise, updates it slightly for a 2023 audience and creates a show that feels complex, nuanced, emotional, and, yes, electric. This is not a simplistic girls against boys diatribe. It’s not a diatribe at all, but a fascinating thought experiment translated into colorful, dynamic TV, with a banging sound track and an impressive ensemble cast.
With an all-female writers room, the show was developed by Alderman, Raelle Tucker and Sarah Quintrell, with Tucker as the showrunner. They’ve created a powerhouse.

In 2017, Naomi Alderman’s novel about teenage girls suddenly acquiring the ability to shoot electricity from their fingers arrived right on time. The defiance of women and girls was a constant part of the news cycle, from the Women’s March in Washington DC to the rise of the #MeToo movement. They were making noise about the ways that misogyny was impacting their lives, and holding perpetrators to account. Six years later, andThe Power has now been adapted into a big-budget thriller series for Prime Video. With a punchy script from an all-female writers’ room –including Sarah Quintrell, Raelle Tucker and Alderman herself – and characters who both inspire and feel accessible, the story is as timely as it has ever been.
“Every revolution begins with a spark,” an opening voiceover tells us. “We never dared to imagine it; a world that was built for us, where we wrote the rules.

In an episode of “The Power,” Prime Video’s series adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s acclaimed speculative novel, Roxy (Ria Zmitrowicz) tries to walk into a nightclub without flashing the ID that would reveal she’s underage. The swole sentinel manning the door tries to turn her away until Roxy creates a tiny lightning bolt between her thumb and index finger. The bouncer immediately backs down, now aware of the mortal threat Roxy poses, but she isn’t finished toying with him. “I’m not going in ‘til he smiles at me,” she says, goading him until he approximates joy. “There…you look nice when you smile.”
The cleverly gender-flipped scene represents “The Power” at its best, and there are thrilling moments throughout the show that justify the reportedly intense bidding war for the rights to Alderman’s novel. The book, in which teenage girls across the globe discover their ability to wield electricity,...

Amazon’s The Power does not want for ambition. Like the Naomi Alderman novel it’s based on, it’s set in a world transformed by a quirk of biology that suddenly gifts teenage girls the ability to generate electric jolts from their fingertips — and like the Alderman novel, it attempts a forest-and-the-trees approach to the premise. Its narrative encompasses half a dozen leads spread out over three or four continents, and includes plotlines as intimate as a teenage romance and as sweeping as national political movements.
But if the broadness of its scope is intriguing, the broadness of its storytelling sometimes comes as a disappointment. Particularly in the first half of the nine-episode season (of which critics screened the first eight hourlong chapters), The Power too often relies on archetypes over complex characterizations, and talking points over nuanced conversations — though by the final installments, it does manage to generate...

If the recent trailer is any indication, Prime Video‘s The Power promises to present both a realistic portrayal of what the sudden onset of superpowers in a subset of the population would be like and a potent statement about the lack of agency for young women in modern times. Set in a world where teenage girls develop the ability to generate electrical charges from their bodies, the series explores the complex power dynamics that arise as a result.
But what kind of show is The Power exactly? Is it the origin story for a kind of superhero race? Is it another sci-fi angle on The Handmaid’s Tale depicting the threats to women from a male-dominated world? Or is it an exploration of how society would react to a potential force for good or evil suddenly arising within humanity worldwide? Perhaps it’s all of the above.

Emmy-winning The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano, who had been with the project since its early stages, has exited as both a director and an executive producer.
Morano directed the first two episodes with Leslie Mann and Tim Robbins. After she wrapped the episodes in March 2022, Morano opted not to continue on with the series due to creative differences as the series headed to reshoots with Mann and Robbins both exiting. Toni Collette and Josh Charles eventually were cast in the roles, and Raelle Tucker came on board as showrunner. In The Better Liar, when a woman hires a lookalike in an effort to conceal her sister’s death and claim their shared inheritance, her deception exposes a web of dangerous secrets. Siobhan Bachman also executive produces for The Tornante Company.
This would mark the first starring TV role for Ridley, probably best known for playing Rey in the Star Wars franchise. She has been filming the noir thriller Magpie, based on a story she had developed, and will next be seen in The Marsh King’s Daughter and Young Woman and the Sea.

Sometimes a whole TV show can be built from one simple question. For Amazon Prime Video’s “The Power,” the question is “How would the world be different if teenage girls could shoot electricity out of their hands?”

Based on an acclaimed 2016 novel by Naomi Alderman, “The Power” is set in London, Seattle, Nigeria, and Eastern Europe and follows a few different girls as they come to terms with their sudden new ability, which is resetting the balance of power in every society. “Power Saves. Prime Video unveiled the first teaser trailer for “The Power,” an electrifying new thriller series starting Toni Collette (Hereditary) and John Leguizamo (Violent Night, The Menu).
“The Power” is described as an “emotionally driven global thriller” based on British author Naomi Alderman’s award-winning novel of the same name.
The new teaser trailer below warns of an impending revolution thanks to a unique superpower that leaves teen girls with the ability to electrocute on a whim. It also highlights an all-star cast and teases another bloody dance floor.

When teenage girls develop the ability to generate electricity — as happens in the first trailer for Prime Video’s The Power — watch out.
“This power is evolution,” Toni Collette’s Mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez proclaims in the teaser above, as we watch young women all over the world discover and use an otherworldly ability to create literal sparks with their bodies. The official logline for the upcoming series, which is based on Naomi Alderman’s 2017 novel, reads: “The Power is our world, but for one twist of nature. As our present-day dystopia grows increasingly dire, the more relevant speculative science fiction becomes. We've seen it before with Kathryn Bigelow's "Strange Days," a near-30-year-old film that effectively predicted the rise of voyeurism in social media and a growing police state in the U.S. We've also seen it more recently with "The Handmaid's Tale," a 1980s novel that felt less like a "what if" and more like a warning. For all its terrifying predictions, "The Handmaid's Tale" became a proper phenomenon when Hulu adapted it into a series in 2017. Success like that isn't easy to replicate, but competitors have certainly been making the effort. Amazon Studios is the latest streamer to bring a similar story to the fore, adapting "The Power" as a series starring Toni Collette. Given that's it's also based on a work of speculative sci-fi, there's already a bit of buzz about this project.

The sweet animated opening credits sequence of Dean Craig’s “The Estate” introduces two nice sisters who run a café. It’s a classic misdirect: a warm overview of sweet, caring Macey and sharp, smart Savanna under the guidance of their father, running a neighborhood joint replete with hot coffee and cozy regulars. Once the credits fade to real life, as it were, we learn that the sisters are in over their head and way behind on their payments, with no feasible financial solution in sight.
The Macey and Savanna of the cartoon prologue do not resemble the Macey and Savanna of “The Estate.” Macey (Toni Collette) is vaguely empathetic but weak-willed. Savanna (Anna Faris) is impulsive and possibly a sociopath. In order to save their precious café, one the audience never actually sees them working in, they’re going to have to butter up their dying, miserable Aunt Hildy...

Toni Collette (The Staircase) has been tapped as a lead in The Power, Prime Video’s 10-episode global thriller drama based on Naomi Alderman’s feminist sci-fi book, while The Good Wife alum Josh Charles is set for a key recurring role in the series from Jane Featherstone’s Sister and director Reed Morano. They replace Leslie Mann and Tim Robbins, respectively, who both exited the series in May.

In Variety’s new feature, The One That Got Away, Emmy contenders reflect on one of their projects that never saw the light of day, was canceled too soon or that they’d like to revisit some day.
When you hear Sera Gamble’s name, you don’t think of comedy.
After getting her start on ABC’s short-lived procedural “Eyes” in 2005, she joined the “Supernatural” writers’ room. Later, she created, executive produced and wrote Syfy’s “The Magicians” and then, in 2018, launched “You” with Greg Berlanti, a drama based on Caroline Kepnes’ twisted novels.
The dramas are laced with a bit of darkness — and couldn’t be further from comedy. When she began though, she didn’t know what route she was headed down.
“This is the story of how I was almost a comedy writer. I would not have predicted this for my career at all,” she tells Variety.

A little boy sits alone on the floor of his bedroom. Backlit by a window, he leans over pages of construction paper on which he is obsessively drawing. A platoon of little green Army men guards the pages, and ultimately the boy. As the camera pans around him, he does not speak — in fact he has not spoken at all since his father drowned in a local lake the year before.
This is not the first time the audience, or even the main characters of “Supernatural” are introduced to this boy, as the moment comes a little less than half-way through the third episode of the series. But through the scene setup and shot style, it is the first time the audience gets a glimpse of the boy’s psyche, which will prove to be indispensable as the Winchester brothers work to solve the case of the mysterious lake deaths.
