IATSE Local 798, a union representing film, TV, theater, and commercials makeup artists and hair stylists, teamed with the Brooklyn-based media and workforce development organization Reel Works on a new training program.
Supported by Netflix, AMC Networks and the Consortium for Worker Education, the IATSE Entertainment Industry Makeup Artist Training program focuses on educating makeup professionals from underrepresented communities in New York City, ensuring they are both prepared for successful union careers in theater, TV and film, and aware of opportunities available to them within the larger entertainment industry. The program expands on a previous hairstylist training between the union and nonprofit, and marks the third time the two have partnered on an initiative.
“It is an honor to continue our partnership with IATSE Local 798, as we expand into training makeup professionals,” said Reel Works Co-Founder and Executive Director John Williams. “It is with great enthusiasm that we are able...

At last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, “SNL” won for its lighting design, makeup, production design, and for the “Creating Saturday Night Live” short form series. That pushed the number to 76 for its 44 years on the air. No guest actors prevailed, although it had many chances with Sandra Oh, Emma Thompson, Matt Damon, Robert De Niro, John Mulaney and Adam Sandler all nominated. For this week’s ceremony, they lost out for Best Comedy Supporting Actress (Kate McKinnon) and for Best Variety Series Writing.

“Saturday Night Live” won Best Variety Sketch Series at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, marking the first time the long-running show has defended a series award and extending its record haul to 72, the most of any program.
Though “SNL” has been on the air for 43 years, it has only won three series awards. It took home Best Variety Series in 1976 for its first season and again in 1993 for its 18th season. After the category was split into Best Variety Sketch Series and Best Variety Talk Series in 2015, “SNL” won the former last year for its buzzy, politically charged 42nd installment. It had leading 2/13 odds to repeat this year.

“SNL”‘s 43rd season earned 21 nominations this year, including nine acting bids. It received seven statuettes at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, including Best Comedy Guest Actress for Tiffany Haddish.
“Portlandia” was in second with 16/1 odds.

Over the weekend, NBC’s legendary variety program “Saturday Night Live” won seven more trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday night. It prevailed for comedy guest actress (Tiffany Haddish), variety directing (Don Roy King), music and lyrics, production design, lighting design, make-up and technical direction.
The show now has a mind-blowing 71 Emmy wins in its 43-year run, way ahead in the all-time record books for any series. The next closest series for the all-time marks held by “Game of Thrones” with 45 and “Frasier” with 37. “SNL” has got three more shots at the primetime ceremony on Monday, September 17, so how many more victories will it achieve to bump up its total haul even more? Those categories are Variety Sketch Series (where it is a virtual lock to win), Comedy Supporting Actress and Comedy Supporting Actor (with Alec Baldwin and Kenan Thompson).

When Lloyd Kaufman invites you to Troma Studios to conduct an interview, you go to Troma Studios to conduct an interview. What I expected was more of the same – walking in, waiting patiently, rocking through a short one on one session, and going about my merry way. Another day, another dollar.
What I got was more than I ever could have asked for from the fabled company, as I was first greeted with a complimentary tour around the building, showing off props and old film reels from some of Troma’s very first productions – a bit of Z-movie history if you will. Then, as I was waiting, Lloyd was kind enough to let me watch how the magic happens, granting me access to the editing room while Return To Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 2 was being worked on. Finally, my interview with Lloyd ran a rich 40 minutes, mano y legendary filmmaker,...

The Orphan Killer is the brainchild of writer/director Matt Farnsworth. The film is unique in that it's generated an international buzz of interest without ever having had an official release.
Currently marketing the film himself online, Farnsworth has huge plans for The Orphan Killer (review here) and its superstar slasher, Marcus Miller.
"The Orphan Killer is a psychotic horror movie," Farnsworth said. "It's hard to pinpoint exactly what you're going to create when you begin making a film. You've got an idea going in but it never turns out like the exact initial concept. The inspiration for Tok was partly my first film, Iowa…I really liked the practical F/X on Iowa. There was a throat slash, finger cut off, and other practical F/X used. I thought it was amazing when I saw it on film and the blood reminded me of the slashers I saw as a kid in the 80's.
