Why Watch? In 1910, (possibly) Otis Turner directed a silent, black and white film (the only kind they had back then) that brought L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel to life for the first time in moving pictures. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz capitalized on the author’s popularity and launched a filmic fascination with the works which, of course, led to the benchmark 1939 version. This is an artifact to be certain, but it features charming images and a fantastical spirit that can’t be tampered by the antique feel. What will it cost? Only 14 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films...

We've all seen Judy Garland follow the yellow brick road in the 1939's classic film, "The Wizard Of Oz," and hopefully most of us have seen Diana Ross ease on down the road in 1978's "The Wiz." But it was news to us that the first film adaptation of Frank L. Baum's classic was actually a silent film made in 1910.
The short film has a few key differences. Instead of Toto the dog we have "Imogen," a semi-lovable cow. The evil witch is not referred to asThe Wicked Witch of the West but is instead named "Mambo." Also, for some reason unknown to us there are a lot of donkeys involved. Much of the details of the film remain a mystery, including the name of the director, though it is rumored to be Otis Turner.
Tune in to a new old adaptation of the topsy-turvy tale and let us know how you think it compares.

How many movies based on the Wizard of Oz mythology will you tolerate in the next few years? Right now I'm counting at least six in development, including this new, out-of-nowhwere project from Mark and Michael Polish (The Astronaut Farmer), simply titled Oz. Nobody seems to have had heard about this faithful-looking version of L. Frank Baum's stories until a teaser was posted to YouTube yesterday (and tweeted by Film Threat's Chris Gore) with a caption claiming that it comes to us from the Polish brothers and it's set to hit theaters in 2011. As for the content of the video, all it shows us is a young Dorothy and a hardly anthropomorphic Cowardly Lion walking slowly and curiously down a hall in an apparently deserted place.
Coming from someone who appreciates -- and would watch in marathon form right now if I had the time -- every Baum adaptation...
