It's been 14 years since Orlando Bloom first played William Turner in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and a lot has happened since then—both onscreen and off. Though he didn't appear in the fourth film in the franchise, Orlando reprises his role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, in theaters Friday. Because of the series' popularity, the 40-year-old decided it was time to let his 6-year-old Flynn Bloom watch the original movie. "I was very reluctant, because obviously you want to keep that normalcy and that dynamic, and I didn't want him to know what dad did for a while," Orlando confessed on NBC's The Tonight Show Wednesday. "But then he...

The five-part franchise began in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl. The first three films followed the adventures of William Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

We are, at the time of writing, little over a month out from the theatrical release of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. And if Disney was trying to keep Keira Knightley’s involvement under wraps, the new, Japanese trailer for Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning’s maritime adventure has arrived to spoil the surprise.
It isn’t the only Pirates 5 promo to surface online today, either, as below you’ll find a pair of TV spots designed to spotlight both the zany humor of Dead Men Tell No Tales – it’s Jack Sparrow being Jack Sparrow, essentially – and Captain Salazar, a character that is, for all intents and purposes, the harbinger of death.
Leading an army of undead pirates, Javier Bardem’s formidable villain has a bone to pick with Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack, after the latter doomed him to the murky depths of the Devil’s Triangle.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ Trailer: Watch Orlando Bloom Return to the Series
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is being touted as a return to form for the series, and one of the saga’s biggest names is back on the high seas. Orlando Bloom, absent from the fourth installment “On Stranger Tides,” returns as a notably waterlogged version of his character William Turner. Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem also strut their stuff in this brief spot.

Bloom spoke with IGN in 2014 about whether he thought he would ever do another “Pirates” movie, and contextualized what appears to be his character’s arc in “Tales.”
“Basically they want to reboot the whole franchise, I think, and do something with me and the relationship with my son,” he said. “I’m of course Davey Jones now, so I’m down the bottom of the ocean.

Bloom, 40, has been noticeably absent from the Pirates franchise since the third installment, At World’s End, when his heart was carved out and locked inside the Dead Man’s Chest. Now he’s the captain of the Flying Dutchman, and is only allowed to step on land once every 10 years.
“The dead have taken command of the sea,” we hear as the trailer begins. Maybe good old William hasn’t been doing his job as captain of the Dutchman?

The rest of the trailer features Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, as well as Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar looking to exterminate as many pirates as he possibly can. Charlie Bronson cashed in big with this lightweight action thriller co-starring Jill Ireland and Robert Duvall. Did Duvall get involved because the original concept was a serious look at political scandals between big business, the CIA and Chile? The clues from the real source story are still there.

Chicago – The thing that can be said for British writer/director Mike Leigh is that it’s never known what story may capture his fancy. The auteur of “Happy-Go-Lucky,” “Topsy-Turvy,” “Secrets and Lies” and “Life is Sweet” now tackles the last quarter century of a notable British painter’s life, through his strange maneuverings and unconventionality, in “Mr. Turner.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The Mister is J.M.W. Turner, an English Romantic landscape artist, whose form elevated the genre into a pre-impressionism age – making Turner a rather controversial figure in his time. The film plays upon that theme, as Timothy Spall portrays the painter in Mike Leigh’s script as a prolific adventurer and eccentric. Since Turner is a landscape painter, the director and cinematographer (Dick Pope) create an expansive cinematic canvas that “sees” Turner’s vision. The story, however, is a mishmash of scenes rather than a cohesive narrative, and...

Disney is almost done casting the fifth installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. The studio is looking to cast the female lead and they've narrowed their search down to five actress including Kaya Scodelaria (Skins, The Maze Runner) and Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love, Carrie).
Also on the list are Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter, Ballet Shoes), Alexandra Dowling (Hammer of the Gods, “The Musketeers”), and Jenna Thiam (Vie sauvage, “The Returned”). The details of this role are being kept under wraps, but sources suggest that the actress who is cast will play the love interest of Brenton Thwaites, who will play a British soldier. (Especially because Disney is running chemistry tests between said actresses and Thwaites this week.)
Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow, and Javier Bardem is onboard to play the villain. Although unconfirmed, there are also rumors that Orlando Bloom will return as William Turner.

It wasn’t just the obvious reasons relating to being a fan of William Turner that made Mike Leigh want to make Mr. Turner. No, what it essentially boiled down to for the British director and his long-gestating passion project was that, essentially, Turner was a clear-cut case of “a Mike Leigh character”. Hearing Leigh describe the famed artist this way actually made me go back and think about the role given that Turner, as portrayed by Timothy Spall in his Cannes-winning performance, hardly comes off as from the same working class terrain of Leigh’s most famous films like Secrets and Lies or Another Year.
I’m still not entirely sure how the statement holds, but the press conference that followed Friday afternoon's screening of Leigh’s lush, gorgeously produced 150-minute biopic did allow for some typically keen insight from the man and his cast and crew who will...

Mike Leigh and cinematographer Dick Pope (The Illusionist) have turned the big screen into their canvas, painting a picture of the life of British painter J.M.W. Turner (played to the hilt and full of phlegm by Timothy Spall) in a film that's beautiful to look at and yet a bit of slog to endure. Mr. Turner is a Mike Leigh film through and through, presenting the life of his protagonist at face value, flaws and all, but I found it difficult to render any connection to the material. At two and a half hours I need to feel as if there is some reason I'm watching beyond bearing witness to two masters (Pope and Leigh) using Turner's life's work as inspiration for a beautiful film to look at, yet dull to spend too much time with. This felt more like a series of well-made home videos someone felt I would find interesting,...

What’s crueler to witness: a force of nature that sinks a great many ships, or a tide of opinion that destroys a lone artist’s reputation? Nineteenth century landscape painter J.M.W. Turner often concerned himself with the former subject on his canvas — sunrises, shipwrecks and such — but leave it to writer/director Mike Leigh to make room for the latter in his latest period piece, Mr. Turner, an emotionally muted biopic less beholden to Leigh’s similarly set Topsy-Turvy than one might initially assume. After all, in a career defined almost entirely by present-day character studies set in working-class Britain — Happy-Go-Lucky, Another Year, Secrets & Lies — only these two stand out as stately reflections of artistic anguish. However, Topsy-Turvy addressed the burdens of a stagnant creative partnership between a composer and a playwright, and by extension an entire theatre company, whereas Turner is more mindful of the man’s often solitary struggles with navigating the...
