“I definitely felt how to say certain words, how to jump in early sometimes,” Wilson said. “How to blue note things. Just feel that kind of stuff.”

The recent solar eclipse that captivated the protected eyes of Americans also made an impact on our ears. The event helped send Soundgarden’s classic 1994 hit “Black Hole Sun” to the top of Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart.
The tune’s title and lyrics paired nicely with the natural phenomenon, leading the song to draw 4.2 million official streams earned (up 34%) and 2.5 million in radio airplay audience (up 19%), as well as sell 1,000 downloads (up 166%) in the United States during the week of April 5th-11th.
According to Billboard, “Black Hole Sun” is the first Soundgarden song to top Hot Hard Rock Songs tally, although that particular chart has only been around since 2020. The song also made an impact on the Hot Rock Songs, Hot Alternative Songs, and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts, landing in the teens on all three.

Kevin Bacon, dancing away, in 4K? Footloose is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK, it’s been confirmed.
Paramount Pictures is wasting little time sorting new catalogue releases for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in 2024, with the news that the 1980s hit Footloose is heading to the format.
Already confirmed in America, a UK release has now been earmarked for February 12th 2024, and the film has gone up for order now. You can find it here.
Initially, it’s only available as a Steelbook release, although it’s expected that a regular 4K disc package isn’t far away. It’s the original film, incidentally, that’s getting the release, and not the remake.
Update: The regular, cheaper release is now confirmed for 13th May 2024. You can find it here.
Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow thus take the lead roles here, with Herbert Ross behind the camera.

Jimmy Fallon rang in the solar eclipse as only he can on Monday night’s Tonight Show.
Fallon opened his show with a message to viewers: “We have a special show tonight: Heart is our musical guest, and obviously today is the solar eclipse. So we thought we have to do what we have to do. We have to sing ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ with Heart, while watching the solar eclipse.”
Donning solar glasses and an eighties era hairstyle and suit, the Tonight Show host then took to the roof of 30 Rock where he joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in a rocking edition of Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 hit. Naturally it ended with a callback to the song’s ridiculous music video.
Monday night wasn’t Heart’s first appearance with Fallon. In 2010 they appeared on an episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Taylor Swift‘s “The Man” has the female empowerment vibes of a Beyoncé song. In fact, its lyrics are pretty similar to one Beyoncé song in particular. Both tunes are reminiscent of a 1980s metal song.
How Taylor Swift’s ‘The Man’ is — and isn’t — like a Beyoncé song
In “The Man,” Swift imagines what life would be like if she were a man and didn’t have to deal with sexist double standards. It’s a feminist anthem from an artist who has become more and more of an outspoken feminist as time has gone on. It’s also part of a cultural shift toward feminism that began in the early 2010s.
Swift’s song has a pair of gender-bending pop predecessors. In 1986, Bonnie Tyler of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero” fame released “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a...

Helldivers 2 has been making quite the noise ever since it arrived on PC and PlayStation 5. The success was quite surprising, and the community has been sharing clips of gameplay all over the internet. A creative few have even managed to craft a trailer that mentions Xbox.
No matter how much the community has been loving the game so far, Xbox players are feeling disheartened by the game’s absence on Xbox Series S/X, and there’s no official word around the same. Well, at least we can enjoy the Hollywood-esque trailer for now.
The Trailer Shows off Helldivers 2’s Gameplay Even though the game is limited to just two platforms at the moment, the immense player count speaks volumes about its success.

Garth Brooks has taken his country music to Las Vegas and isn’t going anywhere else any time soon.
Back in May, the “Friends in Low Places” singer began his concert residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and will be there until December 16. He’ll be taking a break for a few months after but is scheduled to return to the Colosseum on April 18 next year.
Last week, Brooks performed at the opening of his new bar in Nashville, Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk.
“This town has been amazing to me,” Brooks said during his performance in Nashville. “When this [opportunity] popped up, the thought was, does Garth Brooks owe Nashville? You bet Garth Brooks owes Nashville.”
He then went on to explain the reason he named his bar after his hit song.

There is no shortage of stories about the inception of rock anthem “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and Meat Loaf’s reported aggravation that the song penned by Jim Steinman was given to Bonnie Tyler instead of him. Now, Tyler has shared more details about the recording of the song and making of the music video.
In an interview with The Guardian, Tyler reveals the origins of the power ballad. “[Jim] told me he had started writing the song for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu years before, but never finished it,...

Some classic rock stars managed to influence nearly every rocker who came after them. One of Elvis Presley’s songs inspired Meat Loaf’s “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.” In fact, “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad” tune took some of Elvis’ lyrics and made them a lot darker. The song went on to change Meat Loaf’s life.
Meat Loaf’s ‘Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad’ was desperately written as an Elvis Presley tribute
Jim Steinman was a songwriter who wrote big, dramatic power ballads such as Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me.” He also worked on Meat Loaf’s two most famous albums: Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell. In an interview on JimSteinman.com, Steinmen discussed the conception of “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.

Madonna’s “Material Girl” is a very 1980s song and so is the classic rock song that outperformed it. Madonna said she enjoys material things while acknowledging their impermanence. She once told Oprah Winfrey “I’m so not the Material Girl now.”
Madonna‘s “Material Girl” exemplified the materialism of the 1980s. During its time on the charts, “Material Girl” was overshadowed by a classic rock song. Later, Madonna said “Material Girl” didn’t represent her true feelings.

According to Rhino Entertainment, “Material Girl” merely hit No. 2 on the charts. It was blocked from the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by Reo Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” On a surface level, “Material Girl” extolls the greed of the era. It also combines new-wave music with dance-pop in a way that was typical during the time.

The Asian representation in Vienna Shorts this year was quite restricted with just 8 movies in the program. However, among those, there are definitely a couple of gems, while the diversity is impressive, since experimental, animation, comedy, horror, drama are just some of the elements that appear in the film. Without further ado, here is a list of all the Asian entries, in random order.

“Tank Fairy,” the latest short film from director Erich Rettstadt, opens with a definition for workers known in Taiwan as “song wa di se.” Their job is to deliver gas tanks door-to-door, and the definition comes with a reminder that they are “usually male, pot-belied, and lacking in glamour.”

Immediately, this gendered expectation is subverted with the introduction of the titular Tank Fairy (Marian Mesula), a larger-than-life woman who delivers her propane with the unapologetic swagger of a drag performer. Her bright red lipstick and flamboyant nails come as a shock to those who encounter her, including a ten-year-old boy named Jojo (Ryan Lin) who undergoes a personal awakening after she comes to his house for a routine delivery. Soon, Jojo begins to explore his own forms of self-expression, but his defiance of gender norms worries his stern mother (Danielle Yen).

Sometimes a song and a piece of fiction become entwined forever, ensuring that fans cannot think about one without the other: think of "Reservoir Dogs" and "Stuck in the Middle With You," "Grosse Point Blank" and "Blister in the Sun," "Shaun of the Dead" and "Don't Stop Me Now." Then there's the Canadian comedy series "Schitt's Creek" and its connection to the late, great Tina Turner's "The Best." The 1989 song is a big, powerful pop-rock anthem that lets Turner really show off her vocal skills, but it also has some beautiful and deeply romantic lyrics. Written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman, the song was first performed by Bonnie Tyler (best known for her rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart"), but Turner's version was the ultimate, and "Schitt's Creek" turned it into something even more special by making it the song that united two people in love.

The Radio 1 DJ and presenter appearing on the How To Fail podcast when he shared the anecdote with host Elizabeth Day.

In 1993, the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros was so hideously chaotic that it led the games giant to largely shun the film industry until 2019’s Detective Pikachu. Instead of a moustachioed, hyperactive Italian plumber hopping across platforms and down pipes, we were presented with a depressive Bob Hoskins trapped in what looked like the rotting set of a Broadway musical production of Blade Runner. At least you couldn’t call it predictable, though. The Super Mario Bros Movie, an animated rendition of the game courtesy of Illumination (aka the Minion people), is nothing more and nothing less than what you’d expect from a Mario film.
Its comfortable mediocrity is no better captured than in its choice to cast Chris Pratt – the current face of generic, easy-to-market heroism – in the starring role. Pratt, it should be said, is perfectly capable of the sort of outsized performance Mario needed,...

Film festivals tend to have at least one trend. Cannes 2021 was the year of ... well, cunnilingus, while TIFF 2018 was the year of movies about troubled musicians. In 2023, South by Southwest was the year of the brand movie or product biopic (the prodpic?). Finally, Hollywood has realized that people are tired of the same old biopics that distill someone's entire life into a truncated narrative full of cliches and tropes, reducing moments of genuine innovation into contrived deus ex machinas.
Besides, who cares about people anyway? Not Hollywood, apparently, because they have finally recognized that audience's huge interest in recognizable IP and nostalgia means they don't care about people or characters, they care about products. And so, this year's SXSW saw movie writers and producers realize that they could just cut the middlemen and deliver what the people want right to them — movies about products!
That's right. This was the year...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 9, episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired March 8 on Fox.
How are we supposed to live without Michael Bolton? The pop crooner was the latest celebrity to be revealed on “The Masked Singer,” as he was voted off the show as the Wolf.
It wasn’t much of a mystery this week, given how recognizable Bolton’s voice is. Even singing the Doors classic “Break on Through,” everyone (mostly) agreed it was him. After placing as a runner-up on American Idol in 2009, Adam Lambert has become one of the most popular contestants in American Idol history. High Drama will be Lambert’s fifth studio album. What sets High Drama apart from Lambert’s past work is that Lambert will cover other artists’ songs on the album instead of releasing new songs of his own. However, Lambert’s covers on High Drama will all be renditions unique to Lambert’s artistry.
In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, Lambert explained why he chose to release an album of covers.

Bonnie Tyler’s classic 1984 single “Holding Out for a Hero” has received a glam-rock revival courtesy of Adam Lambert, who recorded his own reimagined rendition of the track for his upcoming studio album High Drama, out Feb. 24.
Produced by Andrew Wells, Lambert’s “Holding Out for a Hero” features the electric rock approach he normally takes while on tour as the current frontman of Queen: guitar-heavy and arena-ready.

Adam Lambert lives for spectacle. He’s the person at karaoke who sheepishly pretends they don’t want to take the mic, only to turn the room into an American Idol-esque set. Now, he’s created an album that captures that exact feeling – High Drama.
The first single from the album, which arrives in full on Feb. 24, reimagines the classic Duran Duran single “Ordinary World,” stripping it down to a simple piano melody backed by dramatic strings. He will perform the track later tonight during the season 22 finale of the Voice.

I’ll blurp out my thoughts, then you can hit the comments with yours.

Before The Voice marched any more contestants onto the Battles-field Tuesday, it first had to resolve Monday’s cliffhanger. You’ll recall — or if you don’t, you can catch up via our recap here — that Team Blake’s Austin Montgomery and Tanner Fussell had absolutely slayed Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” I predicted that their coach would give Tanner the win, and Austin would be stolen or saved.
