It hardly needs mentioning, but not all science-fiction is created equal. Even as a term, it’s difficult to pin down exactly what constitutes sci-fi, especially in a medium like TV that can change so much from week to week or season to season. So when we took stock of the best TV shows from the past two decades, we turned to one unimpeachable source as a guide for what we should include in our list.
Thanks, Roman.
That’s not to say that a few of the shows might have an odd sword or two, but most of what we tried to single out here imagines a world markedly different from our own. Some take place in reimagined futures, while others take a sharper focus on the present with some key, otherworldly changes.
Given the wealth of shows in this genre, we opted not to include animated or unscripted series in this particular list.

Ari Folman, visionary director of Waltz With Bashir, brings us a journey beyond imagination in his upcoming movie The Congress. Robin Wright (pictured above) plays a version of herself in this thought-provoking film, which merges live-action and colourful animation. To celebrate the release of The Congress today (our review is here), we take a look at some other movies which have embraced a live-action/animation mash-up.
1) Mary Poppins
Family favourite Mary Poppins delighted audiences when it first burst onto screens in 1964, and now 50 years later the magical tale continues to enchant a brand new generation of film fans. The hit adventure’s wonderful mix of live-action and fantasy animation was surely one of the elements which won it five Oscars at the 1965 Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects.
2) Ted
Boston car hire salesman John’s (Mark Wahlberg) friendship with his best buddy Ted is so realistic that it is sometimes...

Richard Tyler Epperson is described as a cross between John Mayer and Jason Mraz. This is strange, considering I love one of these guys and absolutely hate with every fibre of my being, the other. Thankfully, Epperson’s stylings trend more toward Mayer than Mraz. He has that simple, sing-songy quality that Mayer has, with almost the same level of intensity and haunting quality to his voice.
Epperson, as a singer-songwriter in the vein of Mayer or Elliot Smith, is brilliant. His lyrics evoke a lost youth or misspent youth quality to them, while also having a strong Unit 4+2 or even a Cat Stevens vibe to them.

The case this week on Grimm is that of Donna Reynolds, a missing girl whose disappearance has been haunting Nick's dreams and disrupting his sleep. The potential suspect to be looked into is Adrian Zayne, the maintenance man of the building that Donna had been in at the time of her abduction. Nick sees him burning photos of her and chases him outside, tackling him and punching him in the face until Hank makes him stop. Once brought in for questioning, it's deduced that Adrian has no connection to Donna - he doesn't have a functioning car in order to "haul" her and all they can tell from the charred remains of the photos is that they were actually photos. Nick, though, thinks that he had something to do with it and threatens him at the station, with Adrian (a Wesen) proclaiming that if something happened to him, it'd be Nick that did it.

Music’s biggest night brings out some of fashion’s craziest outfits!
Lady Gaga is sure to wear a few kooky outfits at the 53rd Grammy Awards on Feb. 13, but she’s not the only one who gets decked out in crazy couture. Check out some of our favorite wild outfits from the biggest stars in music.
Lady Gaga — Perhaps only person who can out-crazy Lady Gaga is Lady Gaga herself. At last year’s Grammy Awards, the 24-year old singer went through several costume changes, custom designed by Giorgio Armani. Among the most memorable was a dress that resembled a set of futuristic hula hoops, a beaded ensemble that lacked pants and a green one piece which made her resemble a bizarre Batman villain. Toni Braxton — Toni, 43, caused a stir at the 2001 Grammys when she wore a barely-there Richard Tyler “dress” that left Very little to the imagination. At...

Church Clothes. Richard Tyler, a Los Angeles–based fashion designer whose heyday ended in the 1990s, just unveiled the new uniforms he created for workers at Scientology’s Ideal Org churches. Without being schooled in the sect myself, I can’t comment on why staffers need bucket hats or double-faced capes, but after seeing these outfits, it’s hard not to be reminded of the rumors that surround Scientology, which run the gamut from quirky to frightening, to even cult-like. Which is why Tyler’s decision to drape the church’s minions in elaborate, 20-piece black and red costumesuniforms is puzzling. Some of these looks could very well pass for a fourth-grader’s Count Dracula getup for Halloween. Just imagine passing one of these numbers on the street in West Hollywood, where Scientology’s lavish headquarters are located. And it gets stranger.
