Are we ready for the pandemic musical? Musicals, unlike straight plays, almost always inherently demand that we sit inside the internal experience of a singing character, as song elongates and amplifies each emotion it depicts. Not everyone will be ready to stare into the maw of our memories from four years ago. And if individual mileage for audiences reliving shared horror may vary, the more pressing question may be whether the pandemic musical is ready for us. To judge from Dave Malloy’s Three Houses, by far the most unflinching depiction of life in lockdown on a New York stage yet, the answer is: not quite.
It’s not that Malloy, the multi-hyphenate creator of works like Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 and the a cappella choral-theatrical Octet, is afraid to plunge rawly into the depths of isolation. Rather, Three Houses, in wading through its excesses of ideas and often free-associative images,...

Missing Link, directed by Chris Butler, is the latest creation from the critically acclaimed and abstract minds of Laika Studios, after their Academy Award-nominated animated feature Kubo and the Two Strings released in 2016. Missing Link is yet another sublime animation that is jaw-dropping in both beauty and design, with a wonderfully abstract iconography that rivals the styles of Tim Burton and early Walt Disney features but fails to inhabit any depth with poorly written characters.
The narrative itself is a tad too trope induced for its own good but ever so endearing and entertaining with such a remarkably witty fashion. It’s a lot less captivating and resonating than Laika’s predecessor Kubo, however, it still manages to be remarkably agile in its themes,...

I love the work that Laika Studios has been doing with their films. The stop-motion animation work that they do is stunning and beautiful. They are making tangible works of art to create their films and tell their stories and that’s a dying art. The attention to detail that put into their work is amazing.
Their latest film is called Missing Link and today we have a new featurette to share with you that takes you inside the magic of Laika and shows you the incredible work that goes into creating these films. The video should give you a new found appreciation for the creative that builds these movies.

Written and directed by Chris Butler, hugely entertaining animated adventure Missing Link is the fifth film from Laika, the stop-motion studio behind Coraline and The Boxtrolls. As such, it’s significantly lighter and less nightmare-inducing than their previous films, but is likely to prove just as much of a hit, thanks to impeccable artistry and a witty script.
The film opens with dashing British adventurer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) attempting to photograph a decidedly camera-shy Loch Ness Monster, in a mission that goes disastrously wrong and causes his hitherto loyal assistant to quit. In search of a discovery that will gain him entry to London’s exclusive Optimates Club, Frost accepts the invitation in a mysterious letter that invites him to Oregon,...

One of the things that I love about Laika Studios is the fact that all of their movies are hand-made works of art. They are keeping stop-motion animation alive and relevant and they have been telling good stories with it! Laika is the studio behind Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo and the Two Strings, and Missing link looks like it’s going to be yet another great film from the studio.
Their next film is called Missing Link and today we have a very cool behind-the-scenes featurette that gives us a look at the work that went into making the movie. The movie includes interviews with the cast and crew and it also shows off some fun new footage.

Laika has announced that their fifth stop-motion animated film project will be called Missing Link and they've released a piece of concept art giving us our first visual look. They also revealed the full voice cast and offered up some story details.
Laika is the same production house that brought us Coraline, ParaNorman, and Kubo and the Two Strings. This new project of theirs sounds like it will be a great film and a lot of fun. Producer Travis Knight had this to say in a statement:
"Missing Link is an artistic and technical wonder. Led by our visionary director Chris Butler, Laika has once again blended fine art, craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology to achieve something we’ve never tried before: a raucous comedy entwined with a swashbuckling epic, underscoring the universal need to find belonging. Commingling keenly felt emotion, madcap humor, and retina-bursting visuals, Missing Link is a kaleidoscopic cinematic experience unlike any other.

We’ve all seen the casting notices written with complete disregard to cardinal rules like using proper grammar, steering clear of racist, sexist, and misogynistic descriptions, and y’know, actually letting people know what you’re specifically looking for in an actor. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to see those notices acted out on stage, now’s your chance. Based on the tumblr page “Cast and Loose,” an online showcase of some of the most absurd casting notices out there, “Cast and Loose Live!” presents “Back To School Night” at Joe’s Pub in New York City for a one-night, Oct. 27 performance. The satirical show will bring to life gems like, “Seeking 20s/30s - An Asian woman who doesn’t have the hard features of most other Asian females - she is more elegant and sophisticated and knows it.” The production starring Lauren Blumenfeld...

Nothing Human Loves Forever: Cassavetes’ Feature Debut Gloriously Vintage
Xan Cassavetes joins the family directorial legacy with her feature debut, Kiss of the Damned, a deliciously vintage throwback to the erotic horror output of the Hammer studio heyday. Previously, this Cassavetes was responsible for a 2004 documentary Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession, and her fiction debut seems considerably removed both from her own work and that of the familial output. A visual feast with a killer sound design, she manages to invoke Stephanie Rothman and Jean Rollin, where naughty immortal creatures from the dark side explore a bloodlust as inextinguishable as their sexual desires.
Djuna (Josephine de La Baume), a beautiful, lovelorn vampire residing in a remote mansion in the Connecticut countryside spends her nights hunting animals in the surrounding woods and watching vintage cinema. The residence belongs to Xenia (Anna Mougalalis), an actress and older, wiser vampire, but the estate...

The feature film slate for Austin's South by Southwest festival (SXSW) was revealed last week, but as most genre fans know, the real cinematic treasures are lurking in the festival's midnight lineup. As SXSW Programmer Jarod Neece put it: "This year we scoured the globe and brought back a batch that we knew would truly satisfy the gore hounds of SXSW. Full of scares, sex, madness, laughs, chills and major mind f--ks, we hope there's a little something for everyone."
Browsing the titles, it's hard to tear our eyes away from a film called "Big Ass Spider" (directed by Mike Mendez of "The Gravedancers"), but the addition of Rob Zombie's "Lords of Salem," sequel "V/H/S/2," a movie from "Splice"'s Vincenzo Natali ("Haunter"), and vampire tale "Kiss of the Damned" from Xan Cassavetes certainly helps.
