The Train is back, now at popular prices! The fan base for John Frankenheimer’s incredibly elaborate Occupation thriller is growing exponentially. The railroad and military hardware on view is 100% real, something that CGI-jaded moviegoers appreciate more than ever. Great acting and a terrific storyline propel a tale of sabotage into the top level of suspense thriller-dom. Starring Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield, Jeanne Moreau, Suzanne Flon, Michel Simon, Wolfgang Preiss. A hundred tons of French steam locomotives and running stock are shot at, burned, blown up and smashed to smithereens. Oh, the movie’s about saving French art treasures, too.

Chris here, with our last moments before the Oscar nominations are announced in the morning. Naturally, my mind is lingering on my highest hopes for nominations just on the buble of happening instead of the sure things. My fingers are most tightly crossed for one contender I've gone at length about here: Tiffany Haddish for Best Supporting Actress in Girls Trip.
Strangely, Haddish will be reading the nominations tomorrow morning along with Andy Serkis. While other awards shows have had potential contenders present their nominations in the past (and even resulted in nominations, he said as he lit another prayer candle), this remains an odd and inappropriate choice to have her hopes dashed in real time before our eyes. As if hearts won't already be breaking should she not make the final five, we'll have to watch her get the news. But to block that bummer thought from our brains,...

There is a lot to learn from Tiffany Haddish’s gripping tale of Rose Valland and the true story of the Monuments Men, but the most important tidbit is about Haddish herself: She’s Jewish. Haddish stops her story halfway through to ask “Drunk History” host and creator Derek Waters if he knew she was Jewish. “My father was Jewish, but my mom’s a Jehovah Witness. So I’m a Jew-Jo,” she says, stirring the ice in her dwindling drink.

In an interview with Vulture, Waters revealed that Haddish was drawn to the story because of her Jewish roots. “She really wanted to do the history of the weave, and unfortunately we weren’t able to make it happen,” said Waters.

By now, everyone knows who George Clooney is as an actor. He’s witty, charming, charismatic; he has a very strong on-screen presence. We all know what to expect from a Clooney performance nowadays, which is why it’s exciting whenever he takes on more challenging film roles. Whether or not he takes chances, Clooney is always worth watching as an actor as the confidence that he exudes in front of the camera cannot be denied. As a director, however, George Clooney is much less sure of himself and it’s a problem that rears its ugly head in his latest film, The Monuments Men.
The Monuments Men is the fifth film directed by George Clooney. Even after five films, Clooney still seems to lack a real sense of style. Now, he has made good films in the past, such as Good Night and...

Since Sony Pictures has come on board to co-finance the production of George Clooney‘s next writing/directorial effort Monuments Men with Fox, it appears the WWII heist drama is gaining traction.
Earlier this month we learned Cate Blanchett is attached as the female lead, and Bill Murray is said to be attached as well, with Paul Giamatti and Jean Dujardin on Cloooney’s rather ambitious wishlist.
He reportedly plans to co-star and produce the film, which is based on the World War II novel by Robert Edsel, although no official details have been provided on what characters anyone will play.
Earlier reports (not confirmed) suggested that Blanchett would play Rose Valland, an art historian and member of the French Resistance, while Giamatti would play the co-founder of the New York City ballet, Lincoln Kirstein; Clooney is reportedly playing George Stout, a U.S. Army officer and leading art conservationist, who...

Fox has teamed up with Sony Pictures to develop George Clooney's next film project Monuments Men. It was also revealed that Bill Murray has joined the cast of the film, which also stars Cate Blanchett.
Clooney is set to direct, star, and produce the film, which is based on the World War II novel by Robert Edsel. The story follows the art historians who landed at Normandy to rescue art looted by Adolf Hitler. In a previous interview the actor had this to say in a statement,
It’s an amazing story, and Grant and I are already thinking about how great the casting can be, and there’s also a great love story. Hitler was an art fanatic, and he stashed masterpieces everywhere. He hid 27 Rembrants in a coffin.

I’ve always been a war film buff, maybe because I grew up with them at a time when they were a regular part of the cinema landscape. That’s why I read, with particular interest, my Sound on Sight colleague Edgar Chaput’s recent pieces on The Flowers of War (“The Flowers of War Is an Uneven but Interesting Chinese Ww II Film” – posted 2/20/12) and The Front Line (The Front Line Rises to the Occasion to Overcome Its Familiarity” – 2/16/12) with such interest. An even more fun read was the back-and-forth between Edgar and Sos’s Michael Ryan over the latter (“The Sound on Sight Debate on Korea’s The Front Line” – 2/12/12), with Michael unimpressed because the movie had “…nothing new to add to the war genre,” and Edgar coming back with “…‘new’ is not always what a film must strive for. So long as it does well what it set out to do…...

George Clooney and his writing and producing partner Grant Heslov have an eye for slightly unconventional takes on classic film genres, and for Clooney's next directorial effort they're turning to an old standard: the World War II action film. But, in keeping with their general apporach to finding and telling stories, this one is just a bit different. The Monuments Men is based on a true story about "art historians who landed at Normandy to rescue art looted by Adolf Hitler." The La Times [1] reports that Clooney announced the project over the weekend, and that he and Heslov will adapt the book of the same title by Robert Edsel. Clooney will direct and co-star with Sony financing and distributing. This movie is his first priority, he said, so that Smothers Brothers biopic [2] will have to wait a bit. The Monument Men follows eleven civilian art experts and historians, with no combat training,...
