Dick Van Dyke is a Hollywood legend. But he’s not the only entertainer in the family. The Mary Poppins star – who turned 98 on Dec. 13, 2023 – has four kids and multiple grandchildren. Several followed in their dad and granddad’s footsteps with careers both on and behind the screen.

The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

“Most of it lies within the subjectivity of Florence Pugh‘s character; the character of Alice is what drives the visual language of the movie,” declares two-time Oscar nominated cinematographer Matthew Libatique about the voyeuristic framing of the central character in “Don’t Worry Darling.” For our recent webchat he adds, “that’s where we really played and I think that’s where the film really exists. Seeing her small within the confines of this ‘dollhouse’ and seeing her from outside the glass looking back in. She’s almost metaphorically encapsulated into a space. It just happens to be a wonderfully beautiful space. She’s doing this fifties housework, she’s cooking breakfast for him every morning before he leaves, and she has dinner ready every time he comes home. What is this world? For us it was really about having the camera either very far away from her and making her small inside this space,...

“It was one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen in my life,” declares “Don’t Worry Darling” production designer Katie Byron about some of the scenes brought to life by the creative team behind the film led by director Olivia Wilde. For our recent webchat she adds that Wilde “is so hands on, she cares about every detail, she’s obsessive and collaborative and she’s one of the most amazing people to work with, because she does have vision, but she’s so interested in hearing other people’s ideas and creating the world together,” Byron says. “When she has something very specific in her mind like this, you bend over backwards to make it happen.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have set a streaming premiere date for their psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, announcing that the film directed by and co-starring Olivia Wilde will debut on HBO Max on November 7.
Don’t Worry Darling tells the story of Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles), who are lucky to be living in the idealized community of Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. The 1950s societal optimism espoused by their CEO, Frank (Chris Pine) — equal parts corporate visionary and motivational life coach — anchors every aspect of daily life in the tight-knit desert utopia.

The twist ending in "Don't Worry Darling" remains one of the most talked-about aspects of an already much-discussed film. But, according to the original script - written by Carey and Shane Van Dyke and made public via 8FLiX - Alice and Jack's fate initially played out much differently from the version we saw onscreen. Following all of the drama surrounding the cast and crew of "Don't Worry Darling," critics mainly panned the film (despite a booming 19.4 million box office debut). For many viewers, the Van Dyke brothers' script, which was sold to New Line Cinema in 2019 and later revised by Katie Silberman per director Olivia Wilde's request, offers an expanded look at the original story. Read on to find out how the writers of "Don't Worry Darling" originally intended the story to end, and see which version you like better.

The trailer for director Olivia Wilde’s new Utopian psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, set in a parallel 1950s American Dream, suggests a decadent tale of the battle of the sexes within synthetic domestic bliss. Scratch off the gloss and block out the blue skies, and something akin to sinister, cult-induced solitude lurks beneath, complete with a touch of The Matrix ideas thrown in. Like the characters living in the Victory Project, a new experimental community built in a desert, viewers are also invested from the start because we “believe in the mission” this film has set up to deliver from its promised hype – Wilde and lead actor Florence Pugh’s behind-the-scenes squabbles aside.
Pugh plays smart and fun-loving Alice, wife to Harry Styles’ engineer character Jack. The latter goes to work with all the other neighbourhood men like clockwork each morning, waved off by their doting wives, and driving...

Warning: This article will openly discuss many spoilers about the ending of Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling."
The original screenplay for "Don't Worry Darling" was written by Carey and Shane Van Dyke, who are grandsons of Dick Van Dyke. Their script was infamously on the 2019 Black List, an annual poll held among screenwriters who vote for the best scripts floating around Hollywood that have not yet been produced. Director Olivia Wilde and one of her "Booksmart" screenwriters Katie Silberman scooped up "Don't Worry Darling," re-wrote it, changed the focus, added several characters, and came out with the strange, psychological thriller currently playing in theaters. Incidentally, the upcoming film "The Menu" was also on the 2019 Black List.

After weeks of behind the scenes drama that dominated the discourse, director Olivia Wilde‘s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was released into theaters over the weekend, and the 1950s-set movie dominated the box office in the #1 spot. The film, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, pulled in 19.2 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
Internationally, Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling added another 10.8 million to its total, with the film’s worldwide box office total now currently sitting pretty at 30 million.
The reported production budget for Don’t Worry Darling was 35 million, so it’s still got a ways to go before it recoups marketing costs and starts seeing some profits. The general rule of thumb is that a movie has to make 3x its production budget before ultimately becoming profitable, so Warner Bros. no doubt hopes this one eventually reaches 100 million.

Warning: This post contains numerous spoilers about the ending of “Don’t Worry Darling.” Do not read unless you have seen the film.
“Don’t Worry Darling” had plenty of publicity before it was released, from director Olivia Wilde’s remarks about Shia Labeouf to the Harry Styles-Chris Pine “spitgate” incident and various other dramas. But through all the pre-opening drama, the film’s storyline stayed unknown.
After the trailer premiered, audiences could see the premise was a “Stepford Wives”-like society where women had traditional roles in a sunny utopian society. Once viewers saw the film, they saw this story expanded as Florence Pugh’s Alice character begins to realize that something isn’t right in the placid community of Victory. But as events progress, it becomes a little harder to tell what’s really going on, and the ending has left more than a few filmgoers scratching their heads.

Following up her 2019 directorial debut, Booksmart, with what ostensibly looks like a remake of The Stepford Wives (1975), would be a huge gamble, were Olivia Wilde not up to the challenge. The result is a moody and frighteningly poignant social commentary titled Don’t Worry Darling that somehow seems like it shouldn’t play as relevant as it unfortunately is.
As the film opens, perfect couple Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are introduced living in an idyllic experimental company town housing the workers (men) of a top-secret entity called the Victory Project and their families. The 1950s-era worldview espoused by Victory Project CEO Frank (Chris Pine) seems embedded in every corner of the fabricated community. While the men get down to the important business of working on the “development of progressive materials,” their wives are expected to relax and enjoy the perfect life that has been created for them (after...

Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling is making headlines this afternoon for reasons other than actor drama, rumor, and, of course, what’s known as the “Spitgate” incident. Wilde’s anticipated thriller is now in theaters, with the film earning 3.1 million in Thursday Preview screenings. The total also counts for early screenings viewed on IMAX for select audiences. Analysts predict a 17 million opening weekend, though early ticket sales could result in a 20-24 million debut.
Behind-the-scenes stories about Don’t Worry Darling have circled since the Venice Film Festival, where the movie played for a mixed crowd. Despite the project’s off-screen drama, younger audiences are snapping-up tickets to the show. Many believe this is because of the movie’s Harry Styles factor. Styles is one of the hottest entertainers in the world, before and after his most recent album, Harry’s House. While Styles is a hot ticket, early reviews...

Human beings have a natural resistance to change. Every time anything in someone's life is thrown off course, from their daily routine to their preconceived notions about the world, people find themselves either adjusting or resisting. The numerous instances of anti-progressive thought that can be seen in society today (especially that coming from cisgendered white men) are proof positive of this continual phenomenon, and thus the arts — being the bastion of cultural commentary that they are — react accordingly.
Olivia Wilde's second feature as a director, "Don't Worry Darling," is the latest in an increasingly large wave of socially conscious horror and genre pictures. While some of the pitfalls of this trend can certainly be seen in the film, its themes of feminism and misogyny combined with its surprisingly compelling ambiguity makes it a more fascinating experience than its tabloid-style press tour would indicate.

I never start a review commenting on whatever the so-called Film Twitter Mafia have to say about it, sight unseen. Starting back at CinemaCon in April when its directo/co-star Olivia Wilde was served legal papers onstage regarding her custody hearings with ex Jason Sudeikis, there has been non-stop gossip about her movie Don’t Worry Darling. There has been so much of it, right up to today’s Venice Film Festival press conference (covered by my colleague Nancy Tartaglione) that you almost have to address the elephant in the room. Others can do that, but let us not forget there is also a movie here, one I was able to preview as just that a few weeks ago in Burbank. As a reviewer, to quote Being There’s Chauncey Gardner, “I like to watch,” and that means only what is on the screen.

By now, the question isn’t whether you’ve heard of Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s social-thriller-cum-thirst-valentine — it’s what you’ve heard about it. High-profile hook-ups, the humiliating serving of papers during public appearances, leaked videos, cross-media sniping, several pints’ worth of alleged bad blood, the ghosting of press conferences, etc. Every film production is dysfunctional in its own way. This movie stands head and subzero-temp-cold shoulders above its peers in terms of salacious scuttlebutt, however. Wilde has said she set out to make “The Feminist Mystique on acid.

It would be easy to kick off a review of Olivia Wilde’s sophomore feature, “Don’t Worry Darling,” by toe-dipping into the world Wilde created — one that boasts some of the year’s most gorgeous craft work, from Arianne Phillips’ costumes to Katie Bryon’s production design to John Powell’s score — by tossing off something like, “In Olivia Wilde’s glittering ’50s fairy tale, set in the fictional desert idyll of Victory, all is not what it seems,” because that’s the entire point of this transparently designed cinematic nightmare.
It also would be incorrect, because everything actually is what it seems in Victory. “Don’t Worry Darling” is so clearly, so obviously not set in an idyllic ’50s community that to say the film packs a twist is not at twist at all. It’s disingenuous, easy, cheeky — much like the film itself, which starts off strong before crumbling...

Florence Pugh is one of our finest working actresses today, particularly because she knows how to use her face like she's not saving it for later. Pugh's face will contort into a grimace, a manic grin, or a full-throated sob all within the span of a minute — which is what makes her so perfectly suited to playing women on the verge of a breakdown.
It's also what makes Olivia Wilde's highly anticipated sophomore effort "Don't Worry Darling" perfectly tailored to Pugh, who stars in the psychological thriller as a woman happily living in a suburban idyll with her loving husband (Harry Styles) ... until she starts to feel that something is wrong. Olivia Wilde’s second feature behind the camera, Don’t Worry Darling, will more likely be remembered for the offscreen intrigue — tabloid romance, lead actor replacement, a glaringly public serving of custody papers, a rumored clash between director and star — than it is for much else in this umpteenth Stepford Wives knockoff. That’s not to say it’s without sizeable pluses, chief among them a meaty lead role for the dependably compelling Florence Pugh, who hasn’t played a woman in this much peril since Midsommar. It also scores points for allowing Chris Pine to show what a devilishly charismatic villain he can be.
The high-concept, low-satisfaction psychological thriller marks an ambitious upgrade in scope for Wilde from the character-driven coming-of-age comedy of Booksmart, and she handles the physical aspects of the project with assurance. It’s just a shame all the effort...

On paper, Don’t Worry Darling should have been a surefire win.
The psychological thriller had, in Olivia Wilde, a buzzy up-and-coming director, fresh off the glowingly recieved teen comedy Booksmart.
In Florence Pugh, it had a young actor hailed as one of the very best of a generation, who had just been nominated for her first Oscar (for Little Women).
When it was announced that Pugh would be joined by Harry Styles, one of the biggst pop singers in the world, it seemed the film was all-but guaranteed to be a major box-office draw. So what went wrong?
As the film’s September release date has drawn ever closer, controversy surrounding the film has snowballed.
Rumours of on-set feuds, disputes around firings and questionable acting performances have seen many pundits brand Don’t Worry Darling a disaster waiting to happen.
Here’s a timeline of Don’t Worry Darling’s behind-the-scenes troubles.

Update: Shia Labeouf has denied that he was fired from Don’t Worry, Darling by Olivia Wilde, instead saying that he chose to drop out of the project due to a lack of rehearsal time. He provided Variety with text, video, and email to back up his version of the story, and you can read about those Here. In the email he writes, “firing me never took place, Olivia. And while I fully understand the attractiveness of pushing that story because of the current social landscape, the social currency that brings. It is not the truth.”

Don’t worry, darling, because “Victory is safe and secure.”
The latest trailer for Olivia Wilde’s psychological suburban thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” reminds us that chaos is the “enemy of progress” in a hauntingly mundane and isolated life corralled by a white picket fence and the promise of everlasting marital bliss.
But as Alice (Florence Pugh) grows wary of her husband Jack (Harry Styles) seemingly distracting her with mind-blowing sex (even director Wilde promised the film will be all about “female pleasure”), the facade of a perfect life starts to crack….
Fellow neighbors played by Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, Kate Berlant, Asif Ali, Douglas Smith, Timothy Simons, and Ari’el Stachel start to detail the exact same meet-cute story of falling for their spouses, and it seems like Victory may just be an illusion after all. But as Alice starts to question more and more aspects of her daily life,...

Florence Pugh crushes raw eggs in her fists in the latest chaotic trailer for “Don’t Worry Darling.”
It’s one of the many instances of her character, Alice, going off the rails as the veneer of her perfect life begins to crack. Later in the footage, the walls start to close in… literally.
In “Don’t Worry Darling,” from director Olivia Wilde, Pugh and her husband Jack (Harry Styles) live in the quaint, experimental utopia called Victory. But she becomes increasingly suspicious that his lush company — which is working on a top-secret project that promises to change the world — may be hiding disturbing secrets.
Alice begins to question the company’s ethos, but she’s not able to convince the other residents in the idyllic Palm Springs-esque town, which causes her to mentally unravel. She concludes tearfully, “They’re lying about everything!”

CinemaCon is set to reevaluate its safety protocols following an incident on April 26 in which Olivia Wilde was served a mysterious manila envelope on stage at the Las Vegas event while presenting her new film “Don’t Worry Darling.” The envelope included the words “personal and confidential” on it. Wilde thought the file was a script when she opened it on stage. The incident occurred during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation.
“To protect the integrity of our studio partners and the talent, we will reevaluate our security protocols,” NATO managing director and head of CinemaCon Mitch Neuhauser told Variety. “We will act accordingly because it’s the right thing to do. We want to do the safe, proper thing.”
Variety has numerous eye witnesses who said the individual who served Wilde the envelope was credentialed by CinemaCon.
According to Deadline, the envelope contained custody documents being served to Wilde on behalf of Jason Sudeikis.

Olivia Wilde brought the 1950s to CinemaCon, showcasing the first look at Harry Styles and Florence Pugh in the psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling.”
Movie theater owners at the annual exhibition trade show got a sneak peek of the trailer, which isn’t yet available to the public. The footage opens on Styles and Pugh’s characters snuggling in bed. They play a husband and wife living in an idyllic experimental community in the California desert, lined with perfectly placed palm trees and fancy cars.
“You and me?” she asks her husband. “Always. You and me.”
Pugh plays a happy housewife, one who becomes increasingly suspicious that her husband’s glamorous company may be hiding disturbing secrets. He’s working on something called the Victory Project, which promises to change the world.
“Do you even know what the Victory Project even is? Have you ever asked?” Pugh asks her dutiful husband.

Olivia Wilde took to Instagram on Monday to praise Harry Styles’ work in her current directorial effort, Don’t Worry Darling. Wilde has been vocal about creating a level playing field on set as part of her “no a**holes policy.”
Most male actors don’t want to play supporting roles in female-led films,” she says.
Of singer Styles, who’s acting in the film centered on Florence Pugh’s character she observed, “Not only did he relish the opportunity to allow for the brilliant @florencepugh to hold center stage as our ‘Alice’, but he infused every scene with a nuanced sense of humanity.”
The praise for Styles comes after he replaced Shia Labeouf in the film last fall.

The 16th annual The Black List was announced this morning by Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, and below are the rankings of the year’s hot unproduced (or on the verge of being produced) screenplays. Leading this year’s list with 29 votes is Sophie Dawson’s Headhunter, which follows a high-functioning cannibal who selects his victims based on their Instagram popularity. However, he finds his habits shaken by a man who wants to be eaten.
Many of the scripts on the list have moved forward and are in the works including Randall Green’s coming-of-age comedy The Black Belt (15 votes), which has Chris Pratt starring and producing, for Monarch Media. Meanwhile, Taraji P. Henson is set to star in and direct Cat Wilkins’ Two-Faced (25 votes) for Bron Studios. This will mark the Oscar nominee’s first time in the director’s chair for a feature.

New Line has paused production on Olivia Wilde’s upcoming movie “Don’t Worry Darling” after a crew member tested positive for coronavirus.
The psychological thriller, which stars Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Harry Styles, has been filming in Los Angeles since last month. The positive test was confirmed during routine testing that all production employees receive. Though the studio did not confirm who on set tested positive, sources say it was not a principle cast member. The individual who tested positive is currently in isolation. Production is expected to be on hold for around 14 days, in line with standard quarantine protocols.
“Don’t Worry Darling” isn’t the first — and likely won’t be the last — film forced to stop shooting amid the pandemic. Hollywood has committed extensive resources to ensure film crews can safely get back to work during the global health crisis. Yet many major movies, including “Jurassic World: Dominion,...
