Every year one of the signposts that the Cannes Film Festival is nigh is the release of that edition’s official poster. The Cannes posters of the past have run the gamut, from the glorified tourism posters of the early years to some of the more witty, playful ones of recent vintage — such as Agnès Varda getting some height help by standing atop an assistant to look into her camera on her debut “La Pointe Courte” for the 2019 festival, or Spike Lee and his giant glasses peeping over the lower edge of the frame in 2021.
In their release of the 2024 festival poster, the organizers commented that each year’s poster “sets the tone” for the festival to come. Many of these in the past have been exuberant and full of the colorful possibilities of cinema. This one in 2024 sets a more muted tone, perhaps fitting for this festival set against a backdrop of horrific war.

The Visions du Réel film festival’s greatest singularity is two-fold: its lack of pretense and judicious curatorial eye. The first is, of course, directly related to the other. In centering the festival on the quality, even radicalness, of film praxes, instead of a locus for glamour and business, VdR makes room for cinematic pearls to emerge. NAUSICAÄ Of The Valley Of The Wind (1984) is the only Miyazaki film ever screened at Cannes.
In 1997, to mark the occasion of its 50th edition, the Cannes Film Festival awarded a special Palme des Palmes to Ingmar Bergman. Afterward, and since 2002, it has also attributed the Honorary Palme d'Or to film artists in honor of their esteemed careers. Until now, the prize has gone to directors, producers and actors such as Catherine Deneuve, Manoel de Oliveira, and Agnès Varda, among many others. This year, however, the festival will award its first Palme d'Or to animated cinema and a group rather than an individual. The honoree is Studio Ghibli, cofounded by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, and the dear departed Isao Takahata. This comes after The Boy and the Heron won the studio its second Oscar and breaks with American dominance over these Honorary awards in the past few years.

The French Directors’ Guild (Srf) will fete UK director Andrea Arnold with its honorary Carrosse d’Or (Golden Carriage) award at the upcoming edition of its Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
Arnold will receive the prize at the opening ceremony of the parallel section, running alongside the main Cannes Film Festival from May 15 to 25.
She is the first UK director to be honored with the award and follows in the wake of the likes of Kelly Reichardt, John Carpenter, Martin Scorsese, Jia Zhangke, Jane Campion, Agnès Varda, Naomi Kawase and Jim Jarmusch.

April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. James Hamilton has lived an envious life. As staff photographer at Crawdaddy, The New York Herald, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, and The New York Observer, Hamilton chronicled the faces of New York culture, from Meryl Streep and Liza Minnelli to Jean-Luc Godard and Wes Anderson. One balmy night in 1980, I witnessed Hamilton shooting the iconic photo of Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken in John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York,” standing under the Statue of Liberty.

There's a wonderful little indie distributor based in NYC called Zeitgeist Films, founded in 1988. If you're a die-hard cinephile, you probably already recognize the name. When a classic film industry meets at a market, what do they debate. One issue is maybe paramount these days: Distribution. The distribution of classic documentaries was at the heart of discussions at the Lumière Film Festival’s International Classic Film Market (Mifc) in Lyon, France on Oct. 18.
Industry members ran through the challenges they face in bringing not just doc, but heritage doc, to the audience – a “niche within a niche,” according to Gérald Duchaussoy, who oversees programming and coordination for the Mifc.
For Catherine Bizern, managing and artistic director of doc fest Cinéma du Réel(CdR), heritage documentaries have their place in a booming classic film market.

MK2 Films has acquired a collection of films and TV series directed by Bruno Dumont, the award-winning French director behind “Life of Jesus” and “Humanity.”
The acquisition, unveiled during Mipcom Cannes, covers the bulk of the director’s work, spanning eight films and TV series including “Li’l Quinquin,” which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. MK2 Films will represent rights to some of these titles, in France and/or international markets, apart from a few titles like “Slack Bay” whose global rights are still handled by Memento International.
“Bruno Dumont is, of course, a major figure of contemporary cinema,” said Nathanaël Karmitz, MK2’s chairman of the executive board. Karmitz praised Dumont for the “originality of his unusual, unpredictable [films], veering from gravitas to some unnerving, comedic tangents.” He continued, “Iconoclastic and consistently courageous in its form, his work perfectly represents the free and ambitious cinema that we are proud to promote.

La Chimera, her latest excursion into the fantastic worlds underpinning rural Italy is the story of Arthur (Josh O'Connor), an Englishman who gangs up with a band of grave robbers to excavate Etruscan artefacts, which are then sold to a mysterious entity named Spartaco (Alba Rohrwacher). Arthur returns by train from a stint in jail to the makeshift sheet metal hut where he used to do business. It lies on the side of a hill, below a, once upon a time, grand estate and belongs to wheelchair user Flora.

The 61st New York Film Festival opens Friday on a high note, with advance sales of passes and tickets at kickoff up 50% from last year, which was a record-breaking fest. It’s also a day of heavy rains and flooding in New York City.
“We have never seen [sales] numbers like this,” said artistic director Dennis Lim as the curtain is still planning to rise tonight at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall with Todd Haynes’ May December, followed by two weeks and 111 films from 45 countries.
The opening comes on a day where many subway lines are shuttered and NYC Mayor Eric Adams has declared a state of emergency, urging New Yorkers not to travel if possible. NYFF organizers says no changes so far to the opening-night schedule.
Staffers and talent arriving for a May December press conference reported that taxis were even more scarce than usual amid the rainfall.

Documentary festival IDFA, which runs Nov. 8 to 19 in Amsterdam, has revealed its first 50 titles, including the top 10 Chinese films selected by Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing, IDFA’s Guest of Honor.
The festival has also revealed the films playing in two of the three Focus programs: Fabrications, which probes the difference between reality and realism, and 16 Worlds on 16, an homage to 16mm film.
Wang’s selection will take the viewer “on a contemplative journey into contemporary Chinese cinema,” according to the festival. “The films and their politics are subtle in their film language, representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.”
The selection (see below), which covers films produced since 1999, includes Lixin Fan’s 2009 film “Last Train Home,” which was supported by IDFA’s Bertha Fund. The film documents the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.

In “Origin,” Ava DuVernay weaves a centuries- and continents-spanning narrative feature around the ideas of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Isabel Wilkerson, who rejects the word “racism.” It’s not that she doesn’t believe that racism exists; rather, she doesn’t think that racism alone can explain the inequity in human society — the way America’s founders could have written “all men are created equal” and meant something so different.

A new exhibition about “trash filmmaker” John Waters and new screening series featuring the work of French New Wave grandmother Agnès Varda and freshly scanned and restored Fleischer cartoon shorts are coming this fall to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
The Los Angeles institution will also mark its second birthday by offering complimentary admission to all visitors on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The New York Film Festival’s Main Slate of films will consists of almost three dozen films from a lineup of international directors that includes Justine Triet, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Alice Rohrwacher, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Aki Kaurismaki, Wim Wenders, Yorgos Lathimos and Jonathan Glazer.
