MLB Network will look back at some of the signature baseball calls from Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Costas in a new The Sounds of Baseball episode debuting Thursday, February 8th at 8 p.m. Et.
Cohosted by MLB Network’s Tom Verducci and Matt Vasgersian, the program will reflect on Costas’ run covering the game, from iconic postseason moments to memorable regular season games.
Awarded the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, Costas has been on the national baseball stage for more than 40 years. For the 2024 season, Costas is once again set to be the play-by-play voice for several MLB Network Showcase telecasts, a role he started when MLB Network launched 15 years ago in 2009.

MLB Network, swinging for attention from younger fans, is producing a baseball-news vignette just for them.
Each morning, MLB Network producers will unveil a short video segment filled with emojis, virtual filters and bright graphics, that will recap the best moments from the league over the past 24 hours. “Top of The Order” will be distributed across MLB’s digital platforms and also shown on MLB Network’s “Quick Pitch,” which delivers updates on what happened in the sport the night before.
Many top sports outlets are trying to find new ways to appeal to kids and young viewers, who have come up in an era when the traditional formats of broadcast and cable TV are being usurped by expectations fomented by digital media. Modern viewers often expect to see multiple “screens” of action, or a steady stream of commentary or statistics. Paramount Global has for the past two years aired...

When the Washington Nationals finally throw the first pitch of the 2020 Mlb season on Thursday, there will be nobody at Nationals Park to witness the first game of the defending champion’s title defense. Not even Matt Vasgersian, ESPN’s top baseball broadcaster, will be in attendance, calling the game instead from the network’s Bristol, Conn. headquarters. While sports are often used by many viewers as a distraction from their day-to-day struggles, this year’s set-up makes it impossible to ignore what is happening outside the stadium. “The pictures people see of empty ballparks and people wearing masks beg for explanation,” Vasgersian told TheWrap during a conference call with reporters. “Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to transform them into their happy place of viewership and make them forget about what’s happening in the world.” Also Read: Jeremy Roenick Accuses NBC of Heterosexual Discrimination in Wrongful...

America’s Pastime has fallen victim to the global coronavirus pandemic. For the moment, Major League Baseball spring training and Opening Day are on hold until April. Even as society has bigger concerns on its hands, the loss of baseball is a tough pill to swallow, especially for anyone too young to remember the 1994-95 strike.
But just as “social distancing” becomes the best way for average Joes and Janes to slow the spread of the virus, baseball fans with a PlayStation 4 can safely get their fix with Mlb The Show 20.
Before forking over $60 that could instead easily be overspent on a few ounces of hand sanitizer, let’s not forget that this is an annualized sports franchise, with changes year-over-year unlikely to be earth-shattering. It’s up to you, the consumer, to decide if what’s new is worth your while.
So what is new? Quite a bit, actually.

The two-game Major League Baseball series in London Stadium between between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees on Saturday and Sunday marked the first time regular season baseball had been played in England’s capital.
But it is not going to be the last. The Mlb has already confirmed that it will be returning to London next year when the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs will play June 13-14, 2020.
While many people have described last weekend’s Sox-Yankees inaugural U.K. trip as historic, ESPN analyst Jessica Mendoza told TheWrap that the real history will be made when the league returns.

Sunday night’s Mlb game was not only a big win for the Boston Red Sox. The faceoff between the Red Sox and the New York Yankees, which saw Boston defeat New York in 10 innings, delivered the best Sunday Night Baseball rating in four years for ESPN, according to Nielsen. The telecast drew a 2.2 metered market rating, making it the highest-rated Sunday Night Baseball telecast since the Texas Rangers-Los Angeles Angels’ faceoff on June 22, 2014 (2.4 rating). This excludes the Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals 2017 Opening Night telecast, held on a Sunday.
The telecast, which saw the Sox score three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, then beat the Yankees 5-4 in the 10th inning on a three-hop single by Andrew Benintendi, was up 83 percent from last year’s comparable game between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers (1.2 rating).

This news isn’t likely to cheer Clayton Kershaw up, but ESPN said today that Thursday’s 2018 Mlb opener for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants drew the sports net’s best opening-day numbers in six years.
The 1-0 victory by the hated Giants at Dodger Stadium was seen by 1.67 million viewers, also making it the most-watched regular-season weekday Major League Baseball game since opening day 2012, per Nielsen. The game marked the debut of the Worldwide Leader’s new Sunday Night Baseball team of Matt Vasgersian, Alex Rodriguez, and Jessica Mendoza.
For the Dodgers, it was the first game that counted since the team’s disappointing Game 7 of last year’s World Series — a plodding 5-1 loss that capped an otherwise ferocious Fall Classic that saw the Houston Astros captures the first world championship in franchise history.

Baseball games have gone through a fascinating evolution. In the beginning, they were minimalist masterpieces (gamers of a certain age still talk about the greatness of "Rbi Baseball"), but then got bogged down by detail-oriented simulations (for about 10 years in there, these games were no fun at all). But by appealing to both stat-minded baseball obsessives and more casual fans who just want to see pretty stadiums and knock around homers (as well as some healthy competition from 2K Sports' baseball franchise), the "Mlb: The Show" series has become required playing every spring. What does the 2011 version bring to the lineup?

Chicago – Sports games are like automobiles — every year produces a new release but it’s bound to drive in much the same manner as last year’s model. It’s especially rare for a bestselling, highly-acclaimed franchise to make radical changes in an attempt for an even higher level of greatness. And yet that’s exactly what’s happened with Sony’s “Mlb 11 The Show,” one of the best sports games ever made.
Video Game Rating: 5.0/5.0
The most immediately striking thing about this edition of “The Show” is how it looks. I said last year that “Mlb 10 The Show” was the best-looking sports game in history but this one blows it away. The lighting, the stadiums, the character models — it’s gorgeous. Even just the fluid way a shortstop goes after a grounder or a pitcher moves through his rotation can be visually stunning. Even the crowds look more realistic than in years past.

Chicago – Like the New York Yankees last season, the Bronx Bombers of the baseball video game world have put together another championship enterprise, a video game remarkable in its depth, bar-setting in its visual presentation, and simply must-own for baseball fans. “Mlb 10: The Show” is not quite yet that “perfect baseball game” we all hope will someday come but it’s the closest to it yet.
Video Game Rating: 4.5/5.0
First and foremost, “Mlb 10: The Show” is the best-looking sports game in history. Not just baseball. Any sport. The graphics are not only remarkably refined in this new version but the attention to detail is ridiculous. It’s the little things like the way a player’s batting stance has been perfected or even just that the bats are pink on Mother’s Day if you play through a season that make a title like this one stand above all other.
