When James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy came out in August of 2014, I did not know anything about the team of Guardians. As a matter of fact I didn't even go see this film in theaters. But when I did see it I was hooked from the the opening sequence of the film where Star Lord, played by Chris Pratt, steals a mysterious orb. The main reason why? The great soundtrack that accompanied the film, this particular scene was included the song Come and Get Your Love by Redbone. The rest of the film featured great songs like Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede and Want You Back by The Jackson 5. These were all part of Peter Quill's "Awesome Mixtape" that he carried with him everywhere he went on his walkman.

While bigger titles such as Middle-Earth: Shadow of War might be dominating the water-cooler talk when it comes to Warner Bros. Interactive, gamers would be doing themselves a disservice if they were to simply ignore the 2017 lineup of Lego titles.
I’ll be the first to say; whoever oversees the branding and content acquisition for Lego Dimensions is a genius, and deserves an award for consistently acquiring franchises which will undoubtedly win over gamers, old and new. The original (and still readily available) starter pack shipped with Gandalf, Lego Batman and Wyldstyle, a rather clever combination of characters that allowed for varied gameplay experiences throughout the ‘core’ story mode.
Since its original release, Warner Bros. has continued to build upon its take on the ‘toys-to-life’ genre, rapidly acquiring new franchises to undergo the Lego treatment. From video game themed content (Portal, Sonic the Hedgehog) to classic 80s franchises (The A-Team...

There is little doubt that one of the great things about the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is the music. In the first film, Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt, takes on the opening credits grooving through an ancient town to the sounds of Redbone's classic Come and Get Your Love. In the second film the opening credits features a battle with the entire Guardians team as Baby Groot grooves through to the sounds of Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. Both of opening scenes I feel did a great job at setting the appropriate mood for the films.
Now what would happen if we took that same concept and applied it to another Marvel film? Well thanks to F.A.B Animations on YouTube we can see Mr. Blue Sky applied to Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. They use the fight scene at the airport...

“Star-Lord, man. Legendary Outlaw? Guys?!” As far as first impressions go, it’s fair to say that Chris Pratt nailed Peter Quill from the very beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy three years ago. One heart-wrenching flashback later and our newfound Marvel icon was dancing to Redbone’s fist-pumping power ballad “Come And Get Your Love” while exploring a dark, dank alien cave, effectively subverting expectations in one fell swoop.
Can the opening sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 possibly emulate the first? James Gunn certainly believes so. In responding to one curious fan via Twitter, the writer-director teased that the sequel’s opening is “cooler” than the original, but naturally stopped short of revealing any concrete details so early on.

No critic is infallible. It’s an open secret that few of them will admit, but would be remiss to deny. As valuable a resource as the informed film critic can provide when appraising a motion picture, we’re prone to the same random prejudices and peccadillos as anyone else. Sure, professionalism dictates that we diligently strive to check them at the door, but few of even the very best films are recognized as classics on first sight, and any number of random factors – including real-life experience – can skew our perception as we weigh the many factors that lead to a film’s ultimate success or failure.
Citizen Kane (1941), The Wizard of Oz (1939), and Blade Runner (1982) were all panned by critics upon initial release, yet today they’re rightfully considered classics. So what stuck in Pauline Kael’s craw when she turned up her nose at The Graduate, and who...

Following the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack's chart-topping breakout success last year, the album finally came out on cassette, the format it was on as a prop in the movie, toward the end of the year. Released as a special edition for Record Store Day's Black Friday event, Wondering Sound reports that 2,300 copies of the album in its mostly defunct, recently fetishized format sold. It was the second-best-selling cassette of the year.

Jerry Goldsmith, Planet Of The Apes (1968) Nominee for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture
By Michelle McCue and Melissa Thompson
As 2014 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the best movie music from this past year. The backbone of any movie, audiences heard rocket engines roar, traveled through Lego worlds and made spiritual connections all thanks to the musical vision of the composer.
In a mix that was soulful, haunting and fun, this year’s soundtracks covered a range of emotions, from light to dark, to atmospheric and assaultive.
Our Top 15 scores wouldn’t be complete without an honorable mention…
Michael Giacchino – Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
The story about the birth of a civilization and “restart” for the planet Earth was no more prevalent than with the emotional reality of composer Michael Giacchino’s score. Director Matt Reeves’ sequel to 2011’s...

James Gunn has quickly jumped up to the top of my favorite directors list. Not just because of the awesome film's he has directed, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither, but because he is a freaking cool guy. Gunn is also heavily connected with social media, and today, as promised, he revealed the original Awesome Mix Vol. 1 for Guardians of the Galaxy on Facebook. Here's his reveal and breakdown of the the music:
For the first time, the Entire Awesome Mix Volume 1
In honor of this new Facebook like page, I thought I'd give you what many of you have been asking for for so long. When Chris Pratt and I started working together on Guardians of the Galaxy, I gave him a mixed tape (okay, I admit, a mixed CD) of Awesome Mix Volume 1, that he could listen to endlessly, so he'd know it backwards and forwards, just...

Sitting down to see Guardians of the Galaxy the first time, the most surprising thing about it was its tone. The first set of design, by Bob Cheshire ("Wrath of the Titans"), are of the abandoned world of Morag. This is when we first meet the present-day version of Peter Quill/Star-Lord ("Chris Pratt") as dances to Redbone's “Come and Get Your Love”. There's also designs for the special chamber that housed the orb. Then there are designs for the alien bar and The Collector's collection, which are located on Knowhere (inside of a Celestial's fossilized head). The final set of images are of Ronan's enormous warship, The Dark Aster. Mondo has announced that they will be releasing the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack on vinyl, and they've revealed the art and specs for it. This is one of the best movies I've seen this year, and one of the things I loved about it most was the soundtrack and how that music played an important part of telling the story. That walkman and those songs were like characters themselves.
The art you see above was created by Tyler Stout, and one of the other cool things about the vinyl release is that each one will come randomly packed with one of the following 9 mini prints. They are currently taking pre-orders right here.
Below you will find the full press release:

Overall, 2014 was a pretty good year for superhero movies. Though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sticks out as the most divisive, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy would prove that Marvel Studios could do no wrong. Meanwhile X-Men: Days of Future Past exceeded everyone’s expectations and set the franchise back on the right path following a few misfires before The Wolverine was released.
However, that doesn’t mean that they all got everything right, so we’ve decided to take a closer look at five of the best and worst moments from this year’s Marvel movies (it’s going to be a couple more years before we’re able to include DC Comics characters in a feature like this). Some aren’t specific moments, but are instead characters or certain story decisions, and we’d like to hear your thoughts on them all below.

When Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn began assembling the soundtrack for his Marvel superhero flick, he wanted familiar hits but not overplayed radio staples. In the movie, now officially the biggest film of the year, these songs would connect lead character Peter "Star-Lord" Quill – who was abducted by aliens just after his mother's death in 1988 – to his old life and the era his mother grew up in.
"The tape is really the character of Quill's mother," Gunn tells Rolling Stone. "The Walkman and the compilation tape inside of...

Music plays a big part in "Guardians of the Galaxy" in an interesting way, as the Star-Lord cruises the galaxy listening to sweet '70s tunes his late mom left him on a mix tape. As writer/director James Gunn explained, "that's the only thing he has left of his mother and that's the only thing he has left of his home on Earth. He uses that as a connection to his past and to the sadness that he feels of having left all that and lost all that."
Naturally, these nostalgic but rockin' tunes also resonated with fans of "GoTG." They've snapped up so many copies of "Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Vol. 1" that it's number one on the Billboard 200. According to Billboard, "GoTG" and "Frozen" have been the only movie soundtracks this year to hit the charts, and this offbeat superhero movie's soundtrack is also unique in...

So, by now you’ve worn your tape deck (or, modern 21st century equivalent) clean out listening to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack… and kudos to you if it’s actually a tape deck.
The soundtrack has taken off alongside Marvel’s latest cinematic smash, with the film’s more than $175 million gross eclipsed only by the soundtrack’s debut at number three on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. The film everyone expected to hit, but when you can make a top-five album out of songs that are almost exclusively 35 years old (at least), you’ve truly hit a nerve.
It only took Tom Petty’s first album in four years and a new Eric Clapton disc to keep Guardians from debuting at the top spot.
If you’re uninitiated (and this is sad), the soundtrack mirrors a mixtape given to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) by his mother prior to her death.

If you saw Guardians of the Galaxy last weekend — and from the looks of it, that appears to be most of you — you likely found yourself grooving along with Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill to the song he plays during one of the film's opening scenes while simultaneously wondering, Who sings this again? Thanks to Star-Lord and his Awesome Mixtape No. 1, we now know more than we ever could have imagined about the track “Come and Get Your Love” and the band that brought it into the world.Like Wild Cherry and the Weather Girls, Redbone has for years been one of those groups that tends to pop up at music trivia nights and on listicles about one-hit wonders. But let’s give it up for Redbone, shall we? The band was formed in 1969 by Pat and Lolly Vegas, two brothers of Mexican and Native American descent. The siblings’ original surname,...

“Guardians of The Galaxy” has hit theaters and it has blown critics and fans away. When first announced, the choice to make this movie was met with concern and confusion by some (not me) with there being more popular and noteworthy characters in the Marvel stable. But the choice makes sense in order to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmic realm, and with Thanos being teased at the end of “The Avengers” it was a given. Some thought it was a gamble, but it’s one that has paid off. From a cold open that gives a glimpse to how the movie can evoke emotion as well as laughs, to Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill dancing across an alien landscape to Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love,” you can already tell what kind of movie you’re going to get: A fun ride that’s still not...

Lolly Vegas, a co-founder of Redbone who wrote the hit "Come and Get Your Love" for the 1970s band, has died in Los Angeles, a spokesman said on Saturday. Vegas, 70, who had been battling cancer for several years, died at home on Thursday, band spokesman Joe Ortiz said. Singer/guitarist Vegas, whose real name was Lolly Vasquez, formed Redbone with his brother Patrick in 1969. The band, with members of Latino and native American origin, released its self-titled debut album the following year. "Come and Get Your Love" peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1974. Vegas is survived by his brother.
