- First came into prominence as a right end for Knute Rockne's famed Notre Dame football teams in the late 1920s. After a short professional career, he coached a number of college teams and in 1933 established the Gold Arrow Camp, a traditional overnight summer camp for children at Huntington Lake in the Sierra National Forest.
