Show host Harris signs off with a chirpy, “Buenos noches!”
Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.

Oscar-winning special effects artist Joe Viskocil, who blew up the Death Star at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope, died Monday from complications of liver and kidney failure. He was 61. Viskocil began working for George Lucas in 1975 and a year later produced the memorable blast that enabled Luke Skywalker to destroy the Death Star. He went on to work on Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, creating the on-screen illusion of the gigantic Imperial At-at walkers during the invasion of the rebel base on the ice planet Hoth. He was a member of the VFX team that won a Best Visual Effects Oscar for Independence Day (1996). Watching Jon Stewart rave about The Book of Mormon, the new Broadway musical from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, last night for a solid seven minutes, I realized that in an instance like this, his opinion actually carries as much weight with me as any theater critic’s will — if not more.
