During the last month, I have spoke to Amy Ryan and Andy Buckley - who play Holly Flax and David Wallace - about "The Office." My questions were all about what's going to happen once Steve Carell leaves the show at the end of the season. Unfortunately, neither has any idea. Then producer Paul Lieberstein revealed that he wants to make an offer to Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs, National Treasure) to join the cast as an old salesman who wasn't able to retire due the economy. He now has to come out of retirement and get back to work. While that may still happen, Bj Novak, who plays Ryan Howard and is a producer on the show, revealed that he wants Danny McBride (Pineapple Express) to replace Carell. He added that he's not sure whether McBride will be available due to his "Eastbound and Down" HBO series, but believes that...

After spending six days of watching movies and doing interviews, I'm now coming back from the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff). For those who couldn't make it to the event, I'll summarize my experience, which is from a journalist's point of view. I got to Tiff on Thursday afternoon and immediately had to go catch a screening of Robert De Niro's "Stone." Immediately after, I ran to a nearby theater to watch Ben Affleck's "The Town." While it's always difficult to watch movies back-to-back, the studios do their best to make it comfortable by providing leather sofas, snacks and water. There are no trailers, no commercials, and only 5-15 people in the theater. After coming back to the hotel room and doing a bit of work, I went to sleep and had to get up at 6am to start the next day, which consists of four movies and two interviews.

Steve Carell officially announced yesterday what he unofficially announced a few months ago, namely that he won't be returning to "The Office," after his contract ends at the end of the upcoming season. NBC, however, is already working on a contingency plan to keep their highest-rated sitcom on the air until it's the lowest rated sitcom on the network. There are massive syndication royalties to consider, after all.
No one knows for sure what NBC plans to do to replace Carell, and while it's the preference of most of us to go ahead and shitcan the show while there's still an ounce of goodwill remaining, that's not likely at all, unless ratings next season go into the tank. However, there are a few interesting possibilities. For instance, should "Community" not make it another season, Joel McHale would be a fun replacement. Obviously, Jane Lynch would be the ideal replacement, although...

The regular TV season has come to a close, and while some finales have got us talking more than others (like that heartbreaking and awesome "House" ep), we still have a lot to say, so this week, we've selected a few series and will compare their 2010 season ender to their 2009 season ender.
We'll tell you which hour we feel was better, but we'll also have you vote on which one you think was tops.
So, without further ado, "The Office":
"Company Picnic" (2009): After a funny cold open in which the entire office conspired to convince Michael that it was 5 p.m. so they could all punch out early, we arrived at the Dunder Mifflin company picnic where Michael and Holly were reunited for the first time since their split. Here’s Michael Scott describing his year, as viewed through footage taken on his new video camera: “There are only like 12 minutes that I felt was worth taping. And most of that was just birds in my condo complex. And I miss Holly.” This was an interesting way for The Office to end its sixth, and least cohesive, season: an admission that not a whole lot happened, followed by a callback to a plotline from last season. Still, there was some real heft to this closing episode — enough to give me some hope.
The opening scene of “Whistleblower” saw Michael beaming with pride.

For what was the penultimate Thursday of the television season (I think), last night's television highlights were fairly unspectacular. This does not bode well for sending us off into the summer television doldrums.
Community
It wasn't that last night's episode of "Community" was bad (unpossible!), it was just something of a letdown after last week's brilliant, best sitcom episode of the season. But, with the season ending, they had to wind down the school year, which meant fewer movie references and more storyline development. It was bizarre, too, that no mention was made of Jeff and Brita's hook-up. The episode, instead, focused on the Spanish final. Turns out, Señor Chang -- like Jeff -- is also a fraud; he had no teaching degree, and everything he learned about Spanish came from phrases he picked up on Sesame Street ("Word of advice: If an Asian man says he's a Spanish teacher,...

This was far from the best episode of all-time, and it's easy to pinpoint why:
Not enough Creed. Or Kevin. Or Meredith. Or Dwight.
The Office cast members and characters we've grown to love over the years were marginalized in order for the show to highlight the takeover by Sabre. Which is somewhat understandable, as that will likely be the main storyline for the rest of the season.
But instead of having Michael spend so long at a sullen David Wallace's house, couldn't the episode have given us more of the aforementioned characters dealing with internal changes? After all, the snippets we saw were hilarious as always.
Who didn't laugh at Michael tossing Creed the chord in the opening scene? Or Kevin telling Michael that it isn't a toast simply because he's holding liquid? Or Christian Slater's random appearance?
Jim and Pam have grown a tad stale, too.

Despite lacking big moments from most of our favorite characters, last night's "Sabre" really came together, didn't it, Officers? It was another Michael-heavy episode, with a metric ton of Erin/Andy tension on the side; it was light on the rest of the players, but somehow managed guest spots from both Christian Slater (as himself) and Kathy Bates (as Dunder-Mifflin's new owner). Dunder-Miffin was bought by an electronics company, Sabre, which everyone pronounced "sah-bray." The merger meant new management, specifically Gabe, a young lanky guy whom Dwight greeted with a tray of hotdogs, like you do. Erin and Andy had...

The Office is back! A potential buyer comes to Dunder Mifflin, and the trio - Michael (Steve Carell), Dwight (Rainn Wilson), and Andy (Ed Helms), plus pregnant Pam (Jenna Fischer) pull out all the stops in hopes of impressing him with their high profile contacts. Michael reminisces about all the great times they have had in the office. You know what that means - clip show!
The Office, which was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series, took off last year with the Christmas episode, when David Wallace announced that instead of bankruptcy, a buyout was on the horizon for Dm. Kathy Bates will reportedly play the new boss.

The Office is currently undergoing through a lot of changes, including a shakeup in the leadership that means saying goodbye to some very familiar names, such as David Wallace. With Scranton the only branch bringing in profits for Dunder Miflin, does this mean the other branches will also be rid of people? But what about Holly (Amy Ryan) who was transferred to Nashua?
Entertainment Weekly confirms that, if you're not so concerned with the when, Amy Ryan is "definitely" going back to The Office.

If you think the insolvency storyline on The Office is over and done for, think again. Jenna Fischer tells TV Guide that the shakeup will not only affect David Wallace and the other big Dunder Mifflin executives, but the lower echelons of the corporate world as well, including our accountants, salesmen, and the warehouse, especially Matt. See what this whole financial crisis is doing to our favorite sitcoms?

After an episode that was more depressing than funny last week in "Scott's Tots," The Office got back to its roots Thursday with a terrific Christmas episode, "Secret Santa."
Michael Scott was back to his old petulant, pouty self when he learned Jim let Phyllis be Santa Claus at the branch party, and decided to revolt - as a heckling Jesus Christ.
The comedic moments were rapid-fire - Creed asking what evil boys get in stockings, Kevin sitting on Santa's lap, Andy's gift to Erin - but there was also a key plot point.
Michael learned from Wallace that the company was bought out, and believed this meant everyone in Scranton would be on the street. But it turns out the reverse is true.
While the execs are getting sacked, the distributors of Dunder-Mifflin are the most efficient part of the company, and the branch is safe. It's a true Christmas miracle!

Hey, Mr. Scott, what you gonna do? Whatchu gonna do? Make our dreams come true? Er, not quite. Scott's Tots -- the graduating high school seniors Michael had apparently promised to put through college -- were understandably disappointed to discover that Michael had written a check he couldn't cash. More specifically, a vow his bank account couldn't cash. Bahahaha. Wait…wha? "Scott's Tots" raised two important issues that I hope The Office has the balls to confront: What universe is it that this show exists in? And what are we supposed to hope happens for Jim and Pam Halpert? The Office wanted (wants?...

A limo ride, a recycling mythical beast-turned-robot, a former senator, and a serious lack of line-management skills: "Shareholders Meeting" brought us back to the nitty gritty of actual corporate life, and it wasn't pretty. The life I mean. The episode was...okay. Is it bad that I missed Jan for a little bit? Anyway, forget the town car and hop in. We opened with Dwight resuming his "Recyclops" character, who encourages everyone to recycle, and Jim walked us through the evolution of said character, from mere bandana-and-t-shirt to full on robot costume complete with scrolling Led sign. Can there be a show without Dunder Mifflin?
That's probably the question on every The Office fans' mind after last week's episode. There's a shareholders meeting tonight on the NBC comedy, but it does not really say whether their problems are going to be resolved. Michael (Steve Carell) gets excited when he's invited by David Wallace to be honored at the Dunder Mifflin shareholder meeting in New York, so he brings Andy (Ed Helms), Dwight (Rainn Wilson), and Oscar (Oscar Nu??ez) along in the trip.

Thursday's episode of The Office was called "Koi Pond." This is because Michael took a spill into one on his way to a business meeting and Jim let him flounder. Har har, get it?
A Halloween episode that began uncomfortably (see photo) with a party for local kids at the Dunder Mifflin warehouse became more so after Michael's aforementioned spill.
Michael simply could not handle being the butt of a joke and bad fish puns.
Some of them were pretty good, too. The longer it went, the harder he took it. Then, in an effort to roll with it, he only made himself look more insecure and awkward.
In short, vintage Office.
Halloween. Michael Scott style. Relax ... it was even worse than it looks.

Remember last week when I said that I couldn’t wait to see how Jim and Michael work together as Co-Managers? Well, it looks like this week I’ll get my wish! Here is your recap of the third episode of season six of The Office!
The opening of the show starts off with Dwight looking to get his expense report signed. First he goes to Michael who refuses to do it, because he’s only in charge of big picture, epic kind of stuff. Next he goes to Jim, who refuses to do it unless Dwight says please. Knowing Dwight, he’s never going to say please. After Jim refuses to sign the expense report, Dwight goes back to Michael to file a complaint against Jim. A huge, massive, big picture kind of complaint about the tallest guy in the office. Michael still refuses to sign the expense report.

Officers, I missed you guys last week, but this was not the Scranton welcome back I wanted: "The Promotion" had a few good moments, but none of those moments seem tied to the main plot. Like Meredith and Creed, let's do this. Dwight couldn't get anyone to sign his expense report -- it's too "day to day" for Michael, and Jim was being his usual sassy self, giving Dwight the run-around until Dwight emitted the most animalistic grunt of frustration ever expressed by a human being. Dwight was jealous. Also, Dwight's hair looked different to me. Longer, maybe? Flatter? Parted...

(S06E03) Your regular host, the esteemed Joel Keller, is off hiking the Appalachian Trail this week, so he asked me to cover for him. He should be back in time for the nuptials of Pam and Jim next week. But before we could get to that, David Wallace decided to throw new co-manager Jim a major curveball fresh into his new job.
I'm with Joel on the David Wallace situation. Is he really as clueless about how things are at the Scranton branch? My experience with executives is that ... well, he probably is. In fact, on the one hand, I'll say it's a smart move to make Jim and Michael co-managers. Wallace knows the branch brings in solid sales figures, but he also knows what a loose cannon Michael is.
Maybe the thought was that Jim could reign him in and bring a semblance of sanity to the office.

Following Jim's promotion to co-manager on the last episode of The Office, sort of arch rival (and unofficial assistant to the regional manager) Dwight is not too pleased. He reaches his breaking point with Halpert and looks to the rest of the office for allies. Elsewhere on the next episode, David Wallace goes to Scranton to announce the bad news that not everyone will get a raise this year. Finally, Pam, after being frustrated that there are people who are willing to drive to Niagara Falls for the wedding, would like cash instead of wedding gifts.
Tonight's episode of The Office - "The Promotion" - of course, is the buildup to next week's one-hour special ep that features Jim and Pam's wedding, when the Office crew travels to Niagara Falls for the special day.

I'm handling recap duties while Margaret's on furlough. Fortunate for me, since last night's episode was an instant classic! The pre-credits scene even outdid the Parkour sequence for pure comedic bliss. Michael called on Oscar with some concerns about his upcoming colonoscopy. "Is there anything I can do to make it more pleasurable for me, or for Dr. Shondry?" Awkward grenade, explode! Michael can't stand secrets. So, Jim's mysterious meeting with David Wallace drove him crazy. He needed to know more. "You and Jim are close, huh?" he asked Pam. Pam: "I think the pregnancy really brought us together." She kept mum. Meanwhile, Darryl was talking to Hr about breaking his ankle on the job. Dwight wasn't convinced: "How did the ladder end up on top of you if you fell off of it?" (Then he said "It just doesn't add up" and pulled off his glasses dramatically. Pretty convincing reverse Caruso.

(S06E02) Well, we knew the closing of the Buffalo branch would intrude on the world of Scranton at some point. Little did we know that it would produce convoluted but ultimately positive results.
Well, the results could have been even more positive, but you just know that can't happen in the world of Dunder Mifflin, not with the insecure Michael Scott running the branch and the seemingly clueless David Wallace in the executive offices.
This episode proves to me that Wallace is either a brilliant executive or the most patient sap I've ever seen in an executive position.Continue reading The Office: The Meeting

The first thing you’ll notice when watching tonight’s episode of The Office, is that it focuses more on plot and character than the usual off-the-wall antics we’re used to. Of course, there was your expected level of comedy, but I’d have to consider this episode more of a setup to future antics.
We have two sub-stories in tonight’s episode. The first involving Pam trying to do some last minute planning for the big wedding. Apparantly, quite a few people haven’t RSVP’ed, and so Pam spends the majority of her day “shaking them down” to find out if they’re coming or not. The episode makes us aware that Kelly and Ryan still have that awkward “are they dating or not?” vibe about them. Kelly isn’t going to the wedding unless Ryan’s going. And Ryan can’t give more of an answer than “Maybe yes.
