Amy Winehouse’s music endures because of her voice, obviously — that sultry Billie Holiday-esque sound that could lend timelessness to lyrics that referenced Slick Rick. Her regular producers, such as Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, imbued her classical jazz training with a pop sound that borrowed from ’60s and ’70s soul as well as contemporary garage rock and hip hop. Her image was a knowing collage of vintage looks, but while you can’t talk about Winehouse’s hair without referencing Ronnie Spector, that amalgamation of “bad girl” styles became entirely her own. She had the unique ability to cultivate originality from a self-conscious fusion of different musical designs; any traces of influences disappeared under the weight of sampling and swagger.
The gap between Winehouse’s music and her troubled personal life was never as dichotomous as people insisted; her personal demons fueled her music, and she nurtured a refreshingly rebellious persona.

Australian writers, producers, directors, funding agencies and distributors should ask one key question when evaluating feature film projects: Does this warrant a theatrical release or is streaming a smarter option?
That’s among the most perceptive propositions put forward by a cross-section of screen industry professionals as If sought suggestions on ways to maximise the potential of Australian films as the independent film sector continues to suffer in the cluttered theatrical market.
Some ideas proferred – such as filmmakers identifying their audience at the outset, spending more money on marketing – appear to be stating the obvious. But the fact that some execs see the need to re-emphasize these points suggests lessons have not been learned in some quarters.
The Australian features released in cinemas this year plus holdovers have grossed $37.6 million, trailing the $54.2 million collected in the same period last year, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Anthony Hayes in ‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan’.
Anthony Hayes has been acting since he was nine. While there is no danger of him giving up that stellar career, for the present he is concentrating more on his other passions: writing and directing.
In the past five or six years he has been in the fortunate position of choosing roles he really wanted to do – in the movies Cargo, War Machine and The Light Between Oceans and TV’s Mystery Road and Seven Types of Ambiguity – rather than just for a pay cheque.
Now his primary focus is writing and directing, starting with Gold, a thriller in which he will co-star with Sam Worthington about two guys who discover the world’s biggest gold nugget in the Australian desert. After that he hopes to make Stingray, a crime thriller he wrote and was set to direct in 2016 until the financing fell through.

Anthony Hayes.
Anthony Hayes will direct and co-star with Sam Worthington in Gold, a thriller about two guys who discover the world’s biggest gold nugget in the Australian desert.
Due to shoot in South Australia in September, the film will be produced by Deeper Water Films’ John and Michael Schwarz and Hayes’ Rogue Star Pictures.
Hayes co-wrote the script with his partner, former costumer Polly Smyth, her first writing credit.
The plot sees the men hatch a plan to excavate the gold as one leaves to secure equipment while the other stays behind to protect the discovery.
Saboteur Films, which reps Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan produced by Red Dune Productions’ Martin Walsh and the Schwarz brothers, is pitching the project at the Cannes film market.
Hayes tells If: “Polly and I wanted to come up with a smart film with few cast and one location.

A Straub-Huillet Companion is a series of short essays on the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, subject of a Mubi retrospective. Straub-Huillet's Not Reconciled, Or Only Violence Helps Where Violence Rules (1965) is showing on Mubi from May 8 – June 6, 2019.Critics have often noted Straub/Huillet's preference for diagonals, for instance, but have underestimated the aesthetic and thematic significance of the contrast with more symmetrical composition. Scenes in Not Reconciled involving the characters' inability to reconcile past and present are most often shot in diagonals. In addition to making a simple set “vibrate with life,” Straub/Huillet's diagonal shots keep the viewer from relaxing at the point of a perspective triangle in relation to the screen. In this way they are able to vary the sense of narrative space inherent in all three-dimensional pictorial representations. Not only is the viewer not at rest as the subject for whom the composition...

Kriv Stenders on the Mumbai set of ‘Jack Irish’ last year (Photo credit: Martin McGrath)
Kriv Stenders has an enviable track record as the director of both Red Dog hits, The Principal, The Pacific: In the wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill (co-directed with Sally Aitken), The Go-Betweens: Right Here and episodes of Jack Irish, Doctor Doctor and Hunters.
But even he acknowledges it took him 10 years to make his first feature – which he self-funded – and he has had his share of failures.
Currently in post on his Vietnam War movie Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan for producers Martin Walsh and John and Michael Schwarz, Stenders shared his experiences to encourage directors who are struggling to make their first or second features.
He was responding to a ground-breaking study by UK analyst Stephen Follows, reported by If, which shows far fewer directors in Australia get the chance to make their second feature,...

Warner Bros. has announced the commencement of production on director Patty Jenkins’ solo Wonder Woman movie with a press release detailing the new cast additions, as well as an image that gives us our first official look at Gal Gadot (in this movie, anyway) as Princess Diana herself.
The additional cast members include Robin Wright, Danny Huston and David Thewlis – though the characters they’ll be playing are being kept under wraps for now. Nicole Kidman was said to be in talks to play another Amazonian warrior believed to be Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, but there’s no mention of her here. Perhaps that’s being saved for a separate announcement, or talks simply fell through and Robin Wright is now playing that role?
Regardless, you can check out the full press release, along with the first official Wonder Woman still, below:

"It's important to think. It's what separates us from lentils." --Richard Lagravanese, The Fisher King
He did it the hard way, like David battling Goliath this past Valentine's Day. Yes, Richard Lagravanese's latest effort, The Last Five Years, a romantic musical of sorts with next to no spoken dialogue, opened against the whip-wielding Fifty Shades of Grey, a syrupy soft core melodrama with perhaps too much dialogue.

In an unusual move, Poland's Camerimage festival has chosen two films to open its 2014 edition, with both Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game and Alejandro G. Sam Adams said in a statement that it had been in dialogue with Boston's parade organizers about a change in the rules. "We were hopeful an agreement could be reached to allow everyone, regardless of orientation, to participate in this parade," the company said. "However, given the current status of the negotiations, this may not be possible.

Walt Disney Pictures has announced that director Kenneth Branagh has begun shooting their live-action adaptation of Cinderella at Pinewood Studios in London. They've also released the first image from the film featuring Lily James (Downton Abbey) in the title role. There's no doubt that Branagh is going to do some great things with this film. This is the official synopsis:
The story of Cinderella follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet,...

The ancient Olympic Games that began in Greece in 776 BC were held in honour of Zeus, with a gigantic statue of the deity presiding over the event as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The statue was destroyed by flooding (in fact, the only one of the Seven Wonders still standing today is the Great Pyramid of Giza), but the Games are still here in a modernised form and Zeus and the other gods are far from forgotten.
And, with the London 2012 Olympics about to get under way, the Greek gods are hoping to preside over our living rooms when Warner Bros sequel Wrath of the Titans comes to 3D Blu-ray and DVD from October 15.

The wait is over. India’s most expensive film ever and the most extensive and creative marketing campaign ever seen there. Ra.One is Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s platform to play the quintessential superhero. The film is written and directed by Anubhav Sinha (Tum Bin, Dus) and has music by Vishal-Shekhar (featuring rap-star Akon).
Shah Rukh Khan plays a computer game designer, called Shekhar Subramanium, who lives in London with his wife Sonia (Kareena Kapoor) and son Prateek (Armaan Verma). Prateek is a computer whiz, who is heavily into games and thinks his father is a coward in real life. He taunts him to make a brave game in which the villain never looses, however things go wrong when the game’s villain (Arjun Rampal as Ra.One) comes out of the game and into the real world to avenge losing to Prateek in the virtual game they played.

Those of you who saw The Graham Norton Show on March 11 will recall Liam Neeson arriving late after dashing from Shepperton Studios where he was filming for the Clash of the Titans sequel.
So it's not exactly a surprise that Warner Bros now tells us that production on the project is 'under way.'
An official announcement from Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures does give us some new information though, revealing the full cast and story outline. Notably, the movie no longer appears to be called Wrath of the Titans, with the wording Clash of the Titans 2 instead used on the press statement.
Clash of the Titans 2 is directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) and features returning stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades and Liam Neeson as Zeus. Danny Huston also reprises his role as Poseidon, who was seen only briefly in the first film.

If you enjoyed Clash of the Titans, the remake not the original, then Jonathan Liebesman’s sequel – Clash of the Titans 2 – is now officially under way and being filmed. James Franco and Javier Bardem may not have joined the cast as originally touted but British thesp Bill Nighy as along with Danny Huston definitely have. We’re not sure why Wrath of the Titans has been replaced with the generic Clash 2, but it’s rubbish anyway.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures has recently announced that production has officially started for for Clash of the Titans 2. Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson are all back to reprise their roles. We reported earlier that the sequel to Clash of the Titans would be Wrath of the Titans, but that new title is no where to be seen in this press release, so maybe they haven't settled on an official name yet.
I wish I could be more excited about this sequel, but the first film was so bad I honestly have no desire to watch this one. What do you think?
Here's the full synopsis for the film:
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus—the demigod son of Zeus—is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Just last week, we told you about Warner Bros. Pictures and their apparent fear of putting their Gods in the forthcoming sequel to Clash of the Titans up against Lionsgate’s big-screen adaptation of The Hunger Games and moving the release date for Wrath of the Titans, directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, Odysseus) from March 23rd to March 30th, 2012.
Now, we have the official press release announcing the start of principal photography, and something interesting I noticed is the fact that the press release is still calling it Clash of the Titans 2, rather than the Wrath of the Titans, which was confirmed as the title by actor Liam Neeson back in December. Has the studio changed their mind on the title, or do they still think it’s a secret?

Chicago – If a musical miscalculation as epic in ineptitude as Steve Antin’s “Burlesque” is considered eligible for a Best Musical or Comedy Award, then the Golden Globes are officially advised to a.) Retire the outdated category, or b.) Retire the entire hopelessly corrupt awards show. Either decision is guaranteed to prove beneficial in the long run.
“Burlesque” is the sort of turgid pop star vehicle that has its own built-in applause track. Characters repeatedly assure each other of their brilliance while lame gags are rewarded with extreme close-ups of audience members spitting up water into the lens. Every frame reeks of desperation, as glittery divas Cher and Christina Aguilera struggle to solidify their reputations as movie superstars. Yet while Cher has already earned her stripes as a gifted actress, the big-voiced, dead-eyed Aguilera has unwisely chosen this film to make her acting (if you can call it acting) debut.

Producer and head of digital marketing for Ibm Martin Walsh told emerging producers that Australian marketers are still largely unaware of the potential of branded content.
“The marketing community needs to be educated about branded content; the problem is there are not many local case studies, and you can spend a lot of time trying to learn about brands and their situation in order to pitch a concept,” said Walsh.
At a branded content session at Spaa Fringe, Walsh said there are people within large organisations with a progressive view, 360 perspective, but fundamentally, branded content has to be about entertainment.
The panellists said that they’d be “pretty much dreaming” if they pitched fully-branded content for primetime on the main commercial channels, but the networks are more open to branded content on their digital offerings because they want to see incremental revenue coming from those channels.
