Exclusive: Donald Sutherland (Ad Astra) and Eme Ikwuakor (Marvel’s Inhumans) are joining Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, Stanley Tucci, John Bradley and Charlie Plummer in Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi epic Moonfall, which has started principal photography in Montreal.
The $136M-budgeted independent film will see a mysterious force knock the Moon from its orbit around Earth and send it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With only weeks before impact, a ragtag team launches a last-ditch mission into space to land on the lunar surface and save the planet from annihilation.
Screen legend Sutherland will play the gatekeeper of NASA’s secret archives, who struggles with his conscience whether to tell the world the truth about what really happened during the Apollo moon landings in the early seventies. Ikwuakor will play a high-ranking military official and estranged father to the son of Halle Berry’s character.

After months of speculation the upcoming Roland Emmerich/Centropolis Entertainment sci-fi Moonfall has found a Chinese distributor and will be handled by Huayi Brothers.
The company will serve as executive produce and distribute the story about a scratch team sent to correct the Moon’s orbit after a mysterious force sends it hurtling on a collision course with Earth.
Agc International and CAA Media Finance brokered the deal after launching sales in Cannes last summer. Huayi Brothers and its partners, including Hong Kong affiliate Huayi Tencent Entertainment, will provide equity funding for the production.

Veteran Chinese film studio Huayi Brothers Media has boarded Roland Emmerich's sci-fi action epic, Moonfall, CEO James Wang announced Friday. The company will executive produce the film and take all China distribution rights in the deal.
The project has all the makings of a classic Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) action-disaster vehicle. As it title implies, the film begins when a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit and sends it hurtling towards Earth. Against all odds, a ragtag team then launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space to land on the lunar surface and save Earth from annihilation.

Chris Tucker, Adrien Brody and Paul Haggis were on hand Saturday to give a huge high-tech finale to the fifth edition of the Jackie Chan Action Film Week. So too were Crystal Liu Yifei, star of Disney’s upcoming “Mulan,” and a bevy of top Chinese talent.
Moving the event from the fringes of the Shanghai festival in June, to a new date and spectacular outdoor venues provided by provincial town of Datong, some 200 miles East of Beijing in Shanxi Province, may have revitalized the Action Film Week. Upbeat organizers now talk of franchising the event to other countries.
If the opening on July 21 was reportedly relatively quiet, the closing ceremony was a razzamatazz of stunts, choreography and pyrotechnics with ambitions of matching an Olympic Games or World Cup opening.

Alibaba Pictures Group, the film business arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, has struck a strategic cooperation deal with leading film studio Huayi Bros. The deal includes a $103 million (RMB700 million) loan to Huayi.
Alibaba Pictures said the agreement was part of its recently announced strategy to be involved in major movies aimed for release during China’s four yearly holiday periods: Chinese New Year (around January-February), the summer, National Day celebrations in October, and end of the year. The strategy, dubbed the Jin Cheng Co-Production Project, runs for five years. (“Jin Cheng” translates roughly into English as “Golden Orange.”)
The deal further expands the power and influence of deep-pocketed Internet platforms, such as Alibaba and Tencent, over the Chinese film industry. Alibaba and companies owned by founder Jack Ma have been significant minority shareholders in Huayi since 2014, and increased their positions again in 2015.

Dennis Wang, founder and chairman of Chinese film conglomerate Huayi Brothers Media, said Monday that he would invest $16 million (RMB100 million) in the company over the next year. The move is intended to bolster confidence after the company was recently rocked by a celebrity scandal.
Wang, the elder and more reclusive of the two brothers who still head the company, made the announcement in a regulatory filing. He owns 22% of the company, and is famous for having spent $61 million on a painting by Vincent van Gogh in December 2014.
His planned purchasing is “based on the firm confidence in the company’s continued stable future development, and the recognition of the company’s intrinsic value, and in order to enhance investor confidence, and effectively safeguard the interests of small and medium shareholders,” the filing said.

Five movie studios and one Internet giant lined up on stage Sunday in Shanghai, seemingly seeking to develop a sense of urgency that goads the film industry to bigger and better things. But whether they were all on the same side was moot.
“Consolidation is on its way,” said Ren Zhonglun, CEO of state-backed Shanghai Film Group. “Large companies will be the ones which are best able to withstand the high levels of risk in the film industry.”
“We need to have a sense of crisis, challenges are coming,” said James Wang, co-head of private sector conglomerate Huayi Brothers. His company has sought to manage risk by diversification into theme parks, live entertainment and music.
Yu Dong, chairman of Bona Film Group, pointed to the example of Hollywood and said that the Chinese industry needs to reduce the influence of directors, and company founders (like himself), to become more producer driven.

Getting under way on Saturday, the Shanghai International Film Festival looks set on keeping its place as the most convenient set-piece meeting place in China for the local and foreign movie industries.
The 10-day event marked the opening of its 21st edition with the screening of Chinese-made drama “Animal World” starring U.S. veteran Michael Douglas. The downtown opening ceremony at the Lyric Theater was preceded by the usual red-carpet pageant.
With celebrity actor-director Jiang Wen leading out the main competition jury, the parade was always going to be starry.
The festival moves into full business gear from Sunday, with forums and panel discussions involving leading Chinese executives Ren Zhonglun from Shanghai Film Group, Enlight’s Wang Changtian, Bona’s Yu Dong and Huayi’s James Wang. The growing filmic influence of China’s Internet majors is marked by the presence of three Alibaba representatives as speakers on Sunday alone.

If something were drastically wrong with Chinese film studio Huayi Brothers, it would be hard to discern from a defiantly confident and upbeat slate announcement.
Referred to variously as the H Files and the H Project, the slate was unveiled at a glitzy event in Shanghai’ s famous Bund district, on Friday night, a day before the kick off of the Shanghai International Film Festival.
The company’ s film chief Jerry Ye categorized the assortment in three categories — Heart, Hits, and Horizon.
The near term releasing slate is headlined by new films from Huayi’s regular hitmakers Tsui Hark and Feng Xiaogang.
The company complemented them with the pickup of “Shoplifters,“ by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Ede, which took the Palme d’Or in Cannes. It also revealed itself as distributor on another Cannes competition film, Jia Zhangke’s “Ash is Purest White.“
The so-called “Horizons“ section includes six U.S.

A few weeks ago I got a chance to check out “Fast & Furious 6″ and lucky enough to speak to the director of the past four Fast & Furious movies, Justin Lin, whose films have grossed $1.2 billion worldwide.
Lin talks about the mythology of the characters from the franchise, his departure and much much more.
Just when I thought you couldn’t do any better than your previous film, you topped it off with this one.
Justin Lin: Oh, thanks. It was good to come back and just, like, wrap a few things up. That’s kind of been…when I was talking to the studio back in ’05 and Vin [Diesel] and everything, that was my biggest dream, for me to be talking to you right now. It feels great to have done everything that I wanted to do.
Can you talk about the mythology you created with the characters in this film?...
