House lawmakers overwhelmingly passed legislation today that would force the parent company of TikTok to divest the popular app or face a ban on U.S. platforms.
The legislation passed 352-65, easily clearing the 2/3 threshold needed.
The bill now goes to the Senate, where no timetable is set for considering the legislation.
“The Senate will review the legislation when it comes over from the House,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-ny) said in a statement.
But the bill gained two key supporters, Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-fl), the chair and ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, who have previously sought measures to restrict the effort.
Under the legislation, ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, would be forced to sell the social media platform within about five months or face having it banned on app stores or web hosting services. The bill, called the Protecting...

Taylor Swift’s name is no longer drawing up a blank space on X/Twitter.
Searches for the singer’s name were disabled over the weekend, following an excess of pornographic AI nudes of her flooding the social media platform, which also wiped all results for “Taylor Swift nude” or “Taylor Swift AI.” Now, X has reinstated the ability to search for her name.
“Search has been re-enabled and we will continue to be vigilant for any attempt to spread this content and will remove it if we find it,” reads a statement from X, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
The re-enabling of Swift’s name search comes on the heels of the White House weighing in on the controversy and urging Congress to “take legislative action,” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told ABC News on Friday. “We are alarmed by the reports of the … circulation of images that you just...

Pornographic, nude images of Taylor Swift that were generated using AI have been circulating on social media, provoking massive outrage among her fans and beyond.
The fake images — deepfakes — portrayed Swift in several sexualized positions while partially clad in Kansas City Chiefs garb among hordes of fellow Chiefs fans (a reference to her romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce).
According to The Daily Dot, the images were seen at least 22 million times before X cracked down on the posts. Swift fans rallied to report the images and also flooded the social media site with positive posts about the singer that contained keywords such as “Taylor Swift AI” to try and drown out the lurid fakes, causing the topic to trend Thursday morning. The images were also reportedly found on Facebook, Instagram and Reddit, which have similarly been trying to clamp down on their spread.

If you thought Shou Zi Chew‘s contentious appearance on Capitol Hill would be a decisive moment in the ongoing quest to ban TikTok, then you didn’t realize how long this battle is going to drag on. In his first public remarks since appearing before Congress, the CEO of the ByteDance-owned app reiterated his company’s commitment to data security. Unfortunately, those comments were quickly undermined by a Forbes report that detailed potential security flaws at one of TikTok’s U.S. data centers.
At the Ted 2023 conference, Chew’s talking points were similar to the ones he delivered before Congress. The 40-year-old Singaporean exec reiterated that Project Texas — TikTok’s plan to store sensitive U.S. user data on American servers — is capable of appeasing security concerns raised by politicians who have called for a TikTok ban.

2Nd Update, 12:27 Pm Pt: “Thank you, Mr. Chew, for bringing Republicans and Democrats together,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-tx) said to the CEO of TikTok as a marathon congressional hearing was winding down Thursday.
Lawmakers of both parties pilloried the company and expressed frustration at what they saw as CEO Shou Zi Chew’s evasive answers during the session before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. It was a rare congressional hearing where there was so much agreement on the criticism of a company and a witness, albeit not all members said that TikTok should be banned and some focused their comments on social media privacy in general.
Will the publicity surrounding the hearing compel lawmakers to move on legislation? Sen. Mark Warner (D-va) and Sen. John Thune (R-sd), who have proposed a bill that would allow the Commerce Secretary to ban TikTok and other apps connected to foreign countries,...

The White House is supporting a bipartisan measure to take action against TikTok and other companies subject to influence from foreign adversaries that could threaten national security.
A bill introduced on Monday would establish a new, unified framework for reviewing and addressing foreign technology. Under the measure, the Commerce Department would have the authority to review, block or otherwise mitigate a range of transactions involving foreign information and communications technology products and services.
The legislation, called the Restrict Act, also empowers Commerce Department Secretary Gina Raimondo to recommend to the president divestiture orders, which could include forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok. Outright bans of foreign-owned companies are not mentioned in the bill, but such measures are in play under far-reaching language directing the department to “deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit and mitigate” risks arising from foreign adversaries.

Days after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a measure that would ban TikTok and other apps with ties to the Chinese government, the other chamber of Congress has issued a response. A bipartisan group of Senators led by Mark Warner (D-va) and John Thune (R-sd) has introduced the Restrict Act, which could become the first piece of anti-TikTok legislation to land on the President’s desk.
The House of Representatives bill, named the Data Act, consummated years of anti-TikTok animus by promising to ban apps that send U.S. user data to China. By comparison, the Restrict Act (short for Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act) has a broader scope and a slightly lighter touch. If enacted, Warner and Thune’s bill would target apps affiliated with nations like Russia and North Korea in addition to China. Lawmakers would have the...

With 18 nights left until the midterms, engagement-hungry Democrats are harnessing every bit of star power they can to get some last minute exposure — and for better or worse these memes did a number on us, but who’s counting?

A coalition of entertainment industry unions and associations is urging Congress to include the Performing Artist Tax Parity Act in any omnibus legislation that may come before the House and Senate for fiscal year 2022.
In a letter sent Thursday to leaders of the House and Senate, supporters of the legislation say it would “restore tax fairness for middle-class creative professionals” by updating the current Qualified Performing Artist (Qpa) deduction and “meaningfully impact the lives of creative professionals and their families.”
By way of example, they say that “a Pennsylvania sound engineer would realize a tax savings of over $4,500 under Patpa. A Nevada actor would pay $1,500 less in taxes. A New York musician would save $3,000. This is money that these middle-class professionals can put toward the next month’s rent, putting food on the table, and contributing to their local economies.”

Exclusive: Talos Films, the production company behind series including HBO’s Torn Apart and Discovery+’s Queen of Meth, is to explore the Liberty University sexual assault scandal in a new unscripted series.
The company has signed an exclusive deal with the women at the center of the case and the series will document their fight for justice in The Liberty University Project (w/t).
Liberty University, founded by Southern Baptist preacher Jerry Falwell Jr., has been at the center of numerous cases of alleged sexual assault over the last two decades, where the university took no meaningful action against the alleged perpetrators and sought to dismiss victims’ claims.
It comes after ProPublica reported that students were discouraged from reporting sexual assault with some who reported rapes told they could be punished. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner have called for an investigation.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-ia) plan to introduce legislation that would limit the ability of large tech platforms like Google, Apple and Amazon to give preference to their own products or engage in conduct that disadvantages rivals.
The American Innovation and Choice Online Act would be a companion to House legislation that passed the Judiciary Committee in June. The legislation has yet to make it to the full House, along with other five other antitrust bills aimed at reining in the power of big tech.
The Senate legislation is significant because of the bipartisan group of senators who have signed on as co-sponsors, reflecting the criticism coming from both parties over the power amassed by the large tech conglomerates.
Others backing the legislation include Sen. Dick Durbin (D-il), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-sc), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-ct), Sen. John Kennedy (R-la), Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-wy), Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-hi), Sen.

The White House is asking Congress to act “without delay” to extend a moratorium on evictions, saying the Supreme Court has left it up to the nation’s lawmakers to extend a pandemic-era pause on kicking renters out of their homes.

San Francisco, Jan 3 (Ians) The suspected Russia-backed hackers have compromised at least 250 federal agencies and top enterprises in the US, by infiltrating into 'SolarWinds Orion' monitoring and management software.
According to a report in The New York Times, as businesses such as Amazon and Microsoft that provide cloud services dig deeper for evidence. "It now appears Russia exploited multiple layers of the supply chain to gain access to as many as 250 networks".
US Senator Mark Warner (D-Virginia) was quoted saying in the report on Saturday that the hack looked "much, much worse" than he first feared.
"The size of it keeps expanding. It's clear the United States government missed it," Warner said.
According to Microsoft, the hackers compromised 'SolarWinds' software allowing them to "impersonate any of the organisation's existing users and accounts, including highly privileged accounts."
Microsoft said last week it had discovered its systems were infiltrated "beyond just the presence of malicious 'SolarWinds' code.

The Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court battle has turned into one of the most contentious nominations in our nation’s history. President Trump’s nominee has been accused of past sexual assaults and of being dishonest before the Senate.
Despite testimony by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote on September 28th. Following an unaccountably incomplete investigation by the FBI, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared a key procedural hurdle, setting up a final vote this weekend.

Washington — The party scene surrounding this year’s White House Correspondents Association dinner is a tad scaled back from the Obama era, but that didn’t matter to United Talent Agency.
For the third year in a row, it is hosting one of the most-anticipated pre-parties, the Celebration of America’s Journalists at Georgetown eatery Fiola Mare, with Mediaite as co-host.
Jay Sures, the co-president of UTA, says that “we are seeing that the intersection between politics, entertainment, and news is stronger than ever before, and we want to be at the center of that.”
UTA represents journalists such as Jake Tapper, Chuck Todd and Don Lemon. The agency bolstered its broadcast and news division in 2014 with the acquisition of N.S. Bienstock, with clients such as Anderson Cooper and Robin Roberts, and more recently acquired speakers agency Greater Talent Network.

Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee called Twitter’s presentation on the Russia-backed fake news campaign “deeply disappointing” in a statement to reporters on Thursday. Representatives from Twitter met with the House and Senate intelligence committees on Tuesday to discuss Russia’s use of social media to meddle with the 2016 presidential election. The company said it “took action” against 201 accounts tied to a Russian troll farm — including 22 that were linked to Facebook’s recent fake news investigation. “The notion that their work was basically derivative, based upon accounts that Facebook had identified, showed enormous lack...

The union representing Associated Press employees is calling for the reinstatement of two employees fired for an erroneous report about Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, saying the news agency has overreacted to “a mistake.” News Media Guild President Martha Waggoner noted that two fired staffers in the AP’s Richmond, Va., bureau were so well-regarded that Virgina’s top politicians are attending an event Nov. 18 to support them. Gov. Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling are Republicans, and Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner — both former governors — are Democrats. Each and every month, we here at Sound On Sight dedicate the entire month to a specific theme. Sometimes we follow an event, an actor, a filmmaker and so on, as decided by our readers who vote on our monthly poll. February of 2013 was dedicated to actor Keanu Reeves. When the results came in, just about everyone was surprised that Keanu won over Steven Soderbergh, who finished a close second. But what has been even more surprising is that our Keanu Reeves marathon is without a doubt the most successful so far – driving in more traffic than the likes of Quentin Tarantino and 007.
Despite the fact that his acting has frequently been ridiculed as wooden, Keanu has always had a magical presence everywhere he appears, both on and offscreen. There is something to be said about a man who dropped out of high-school to follow his dreams of acting, and 27 years later,...

A good commencement speech gets graduates motivated about their futures; a great commencement speech gets cited as a source of inspiration for years after and resonates with more than just college students.
Winston Churchill telling those at the Harrow School never to give in. Steve Jobs telling Stanford students not to waste time living someone else's life. Stephen Colbert encouraging graduates to say "yes" to everything. That whole "Wear Sunscreen" thing that got so big it was set to music and played on radio in a a seemingly endless loop. Okay, so that one wasn't even a commencement speech -- it was an article by Mary Schmich about what she would say to college graduates -- but it feels so much like what an unforgettable commencement speech sounds like that for years it's been misattributed to Kurt Vonnegut speaking at MIT.
Either way, the best commencement speeches -- actual or...

Things look bleak for 2012, but Republicans have talent in the pipeline. Andrew Romano on why the party should save themselves for 2016.
Mitt Romney is damaged goods. Tim Pawlenty is a snooze. Newt Gingrich is a mess. And Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, and Ron Paul are unelectable. It's no surprise that Republicans are responding to their 2012 choices with "a range of emotions running from disappointment to panic," as National Review editor Rich Lowry quipped in a recent column.

But the Gop's short-term dismay should be tempered with something like long-term relief. Why? Because the very conundrum that's currently vexing conservatives-an unsatisfying crop of 2012 contenders-is setting them up to reap a far more important reward four years from now: a standard-bearer they can actually be proud of, running in a race that he or she...

Senator Tom Coburn (R-ok) up and left the Gang of Six, a team of three Democratic senators and three two Republican senators who use teamwork, friendship, and positive mental attitudes to try to hammer out a workable budget. The Gang of Six has been “struggling for months to reach agreement on a long range deficit reduction plan,” according to Politico. However, Coburn had had his fill of fun, and summarily made his exit earlier this afternoon. Perhaps he’ll find time to get back to his true passion: using a shovel to decapitate snakes that crawl into his pool. The Gang is down to Democrats Mark Warner, Dick Durbin, and Kent Conrad and Republicans Mike Crapo and Saxby Chambliss—most of whom, frankly, sound made up. Can a group of five people even be considered a gang? Or are they now more of a pride, or a gaggle?...

President Obama is in the Gulf again today -- his fourth visit in less than three weeks. Suffice to say the message that he appeared laissez-faire about the spill has hit home. Obama gave a longish address following today's tour -- too long for Fox News, apparently; they cut out early on to talk to Sen. Mark Warner...from Virginia. Meanwhile, Obama did not attempt to sugar coat the reality of the situation.

I know that Top Chef: Masters is currently airing on Bravo, but, in my opinion, it just doesn’t compare to the original. (I’d much rather see someone who could actually benefit from winning the competition than someone who has already established him or herself in the food world.) For those of you who have been conducting your own quickfire challenges each morning to make up for the lack of Top Chef, the wait will soon be over: Top Chef: Washington D.C. premieres on June 16!
