Here’s a story about a different kind of ‘lockdown.’ This near-perfect Americana drama might be the real pinnacle of Sissy Spacek’s wonderful career. The no-baloney tale of rural life on the Texas coastline during WW2 is packed with strong emotions and solid sentiment. Wartime hardship and catch-as-catch-can romance strike an uneasy balance with more threatening material, including a highly suspenseful finish. First-time director Jack Fisk hits this one out of the park, with help from Eric Roberts, William Sanderson, Tracey Walter, R.G. Armstrong, Sam Shepard and little Henry Thomas. This is one of those special pictures that creates a warm feeling about people. The ‘Rum and Coca Cola’ scene is perfection of a special kind.

It’s the brightest debut feature of 1970, and perhaps the warmest movie ever about the American race divide. Hal Ashby and Bill Gunn’s work is inspired: rich boy Beau Bridges buys a slum tenement and launches a wonderful ensemble comedy-drama in confrontation with the fantastic quartet of actresses — Lee Grant, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey and Marki Bey. The humanist picture doesn’t cheat on its subject matter. The cast list contains fresh debuts and and more best-of-career showings: Louis Gossett Jr., Melvin Stewart, Susan Anspach, Robert Klein.

While the 1990’s offered few great Vampire films, there were a good fistful of entertaining, and enjoyable contributions. One of which, was helmed by Master of Macabre John Carpenter. Carpenter, who has made a reputation by creating outlandish, and often over-the-top genre pieces rounded up a fitting cast to once again, pull no punches.
Vampires focuses on a group of joyriding vampire hunters led by the erratic Jack (James Woods) Crow. Along with Crow the posse consists of suave tough guy Anthony (Daniel Baldwin) Montoya, Father (Gregory Sierra) Giovanni, and Catlin (longtime genre veteran Mark Boone Junior, who you may recognize from such films as 30 Days Of Night, Wristcutters, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) amongst others. For this band of mercenaries, the goal is to eliminate the first, and oldest living vampire Jan Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith), before he can locate the Berziers Cross, which holds...
