It feels like fall is finally in the air, now that the long-awaited release of "Halloween Ends" is officially here. True, it's only been a year since "Halloween Kills" upped the body count (34 dastardly deaths to be exact), but every time the month of October comes to a close, it feels like an eternity until Halloween rolls around again on the calendar. Now that this current timeline is complete, it's fascinating to take a look back at all of the homages and subtle nods these three latest films have cleverly inserted. From John Carpenter's continued involvement as a composer to "Halloween" 2018's direct connection to the 1978 original, David Gordon Green's new trilogy of "Halloween" films have made it a point to pay respect to what's come before.
Considering that Green's franchise entries completely disregard the original direct sequel "Halloween II" and all subsequent films, it's a little odd,...

Over 20 years after helming an episode of America’s Most Wanted -- yes, that long-running docuseries hosted by John Walsh -- director Greg Yaitanes is back in the true crime world following his transition into prestige TV with House, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and most recently, Cinemax’s Banshee and Quarry. Now, he’s the showrunner of Discovery Channel’s anticipated new anthology series, Manhunt, which debuts its first season, Unabomber, on Tuesday, Aug. 1.
The first season follows FBI agent and criminal profiler James “Fitz” Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington) as he pioneers new forensic linguistics to find and ultimately capture Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), the nation’s deadliest serial bomber in history. The 8-episode series written by Andrew Sodroski (scribe of Holland, Michigan, which topped Hollywood’s 2013 Black List) offers a perspective of the FBI’s hunt not often seen.

The Muppets came back in a big way with 2011′s modestly-titled The Muppets, which was a surprising success despite the objections of some Muppet purists. Now director James Bobin is returning for a follow-up with Muppets Most Wanted, a film that is not narrated by John Walsh, but totally should be. We saw a teaser trailer for the film back in August, but it was a little bit vague, as teasers are wont to be. This time we’ve got the real thing: a full-fledged trailer with ample footage from the movie.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (Smpte) has established a new technology committee which will work to improve the quality and consistency of cinema sound.
The committee, Tc-25Css, will also work to update Smpte standards and recommended practices to reflect the many technical advances which have occured since the standards were created.
"Improvements in measurement technology, digital sound delivery, and in sound reproduction equipment, as well as the greater detail and dynamic range of movie soundtracks, present a variety of challenges in providing quality cinema sound," Brian Vessa, executive director of digital audio mastering at Sony Pictures Entertainment and chair of the new Smpte committee, said in a statement.
"Existing Smpte standards and recommended practices help to minimise variations but cinema sound quality today is highly dependent on the skill, talent, training, and hearing acuity of the adjusting technician. Tc-25Css, the first Smpte technology committee dedicated solely to cinema sound,...

Washington -- Even in retirement, Barney Frank promises to antagonize the right wing.
The 72-year-old Massachusetts representative ends a storied congressional career in less than three weeks. In a tenure that spanned more than three decades, Frank has helped lead the civil rights debate as one of the first openly gay elected officials, crafted a financial reform bill designed to prevent another global crisis and become a liberal hero for his willingness to clash with conservative critics.
His days on C-span may be almost over. And he has already moved out of his Capitol Hill office and Washington apartment. But this man will not go away quietly.
Frank has retained Hollywood super-agent Ari Emanuel to ensure he is a paid fixture on cable television, the lecture circuit, in bookstores – and maybe the occasional sitcom or Broadway show. He has already sent his agent two book proposals, one offering a recipe...

An ambitious attempt to write a 'personal' history of cinema is sometimes intelligent but rarely convincing
Maxim Gorky, the first major writer to record his impressions of the cinema, wrote in his local newspaper the day after seeing the first Lumière brothers show in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896: "Last night I was in the Kingdom of Shadows. If you only knew how strange it is to be there … I was at Aumont's and saw Lumière's cinématographe – moving photography. The extraordinary impression it creates is so unique and complex that I doubt my ability to describe it with all its nuances." A few years later Rudyard Kipling wrote Mrs Bathurst, the first significant work of fiction inspired by the movies, a mysteriously haunting tale of a sailor driven to his death by a brief newsreel he obsessively views in Cape Town. The new medium had the power to disturb, to fascinate,...
