Mary F. Watkins(1889-1974)

As recounted in The Rainbow Bridge (1954), Mary Fitch Watkins served seven years as assistant to opera star Olive Fremstad (1871-1951), who is regarded as a model for Thea Kronborg in Willa Cather's The Song of the Lark (1915). She was a driver for Anne Morgan's American Fund for French Wounded in France from April 1918 to January 1919. Watkins was a contributor to periodicals such as the New Yorker, the Saturday Evening Post, and Vogue, and was the dance critic for the New York Herald Tribune. She married Brooklyn Eagle editor and music critic Edward T. F. Cushing in 1926 (one daughter).
