Movie star John Wayne had strong feelings about television. However, this extended beyond his thoughts on the business end of the industry. Wayne had a big family, and he enjoyed spending time with them when he had the opportunity to do so away from movie sets. Wayne once explained the “worst” part of television when it came to raising a family.

Wayne had seven children over the course of two marriages to Josephine Alicia Saenz and Pilar Pallete, his first and third wives. He didn’t have any children with his second wife, Esperanza Baur, also known as Chata. Wayne’s marital issues weren’t necessarily a secret, as he was frequently accused of having affairs with other women.

The 20-year-long persistence of the superhero genre in contemporary blockbuster cinema has cause many pundits to draw a genre parallel between comic book movies and Westerns. In 2015, the Guardian published an essay comparing the two cinematic trends, largely as a predictor as to when the superhero film would finally cease its continued ascendency. That same year, Steven Spielberg compared the genres, once again using the moribund Western as an indicator of the ephemerality of any genre. Seven years since then, superhero movies have churned out several enormous hits, including several of the biggest box office bonanzas of all time. In 2022, however, the entertainment landscape has changed a lot, companies are merging into weird, gross entities, and high-profile superhero projects now stand the chance of being canceled. Pundits have been predicting it for years, but superhero movies may finally be on the downhill slope. Only time will tell.

The Duke's head gear from The Green Berets and The High and the Mighty.
By Roland Schaefli
“This is crazy”, Ethan Wayne whispered, as the bids in the auction started to climb way over the estimates. The youngest son of movie legend John Wayne and other members of the Wayne clan were present at the Beverly Hills auction on Oct 6th, announcing that this would be the once in a lifetime shot for fans to get a piece of the Duke, “and we’re not going to do it again” – and still, they could not imagine that the fans would dig so deep in their pockets to collect their father’s artifacts. The total of the two day sale eventually exceeded $5.4 million, a portion of the proceeds of which will fund the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.
