Among the elements that make college basketball a phenomenon are the teams that had likewise carved their identity into mainstream popularity. Case in point: Duke and North Carolina. Those two schools’ names have been welded into each other’s for as long we can remember that when one says Blue Devils, the other would conjure up images of Tar Heels instinctively.
Of course, that other one would have difficulty forming an image of Tar Heels in his imagination because seriously, what are Tar Heels?
Or to put it more generally, how did some of the most popular college teams came up with their monikers? Where did they get them? Let’s take a look at 11 of them.
Indiana Hoosier
From Hoosier’s men to Hoosier’s nest, Indiana University sure has an interesting nickname.
Image courtesy of ESPNWay before Bob Knight started hurling chairs across the hardcourt, the term Hoosier has long been in usage.

Yes, LeBron James stunk up the court during Miami Heat's NBA Finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks. But he still doesn't deserve all the abuse, says Buzz Bissinger.

For those film fans who are currently wrapped up in March Madness, this writer heavily recommends you tune into Espn at 9pm Et, for the premiere of Espn Films’ The Fab Five.
By the producers of Espn’s 30 for 30 documentary series, this two hour film tells the captivating story of one of the most famous/infamous teams in college basketball history. It all began in the fall of 1991, when five freshmen- Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, Ray Jackson, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber- set foot on the campus of the University of Michigan, representing the greatest class ever recruited. For all freshmen college recruits, these five freshmen were among the top 100. Four of them, among the top 10.
The group, who eventually became known as the “Fab Five”, would make history not only for being the first all-freshman starting line-up, but also charged a cultural revolution that would forever change college basketball.

LeBron James may be the best player in the NBA (and there are arguments for him being the game's best of all time), but he hasn't yet tested his skills on the microphone like some other basketball stars. Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Chris Webber and Kobe Bryant have all dipped their toes into the rap game with varying degrees of success, but perhaps the most successful (and ubiquitous) baller-turned-mc is Shaquille O'Neal. Shaq has put out several hit records and dropped a couple of popular singles (especially during the beginning of his career), and he happens to be James' newest teammate on the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs got to the Eastern Conference Finals before falling to the Orlando Magic last season, but maybe Shaq is the missing piece of the puzzle.
James may not have any experience as a rapper, but he certainly knows his way around the hip-hop game.

Tonight’s NBA Draft will make a handful of young men into instant millionaires and household names in their new teams’ cities. The basketball contract is merely the beginning, as there will be endorsement deals, commercial acting, clothing lines and — if they’re especially ambitious — an attempted rap career. The NBA is littered on all sides with players who dabbled in the hip-hop game, but the ratio of attempts to success is way off-kilter. Save for the platinum status of Shaquille O’Neal’s Shaq Diesel, most of attempts at rap have ended in sadness. To wit:

Last night the U.S. Airways Arena in Phoenix was packed to the gills with eager spectators waiting to see John Legend play piano, watch Shaqiule O’neil dance and listen to Kevin Rudolf get nasty with it. Then in a surprise turn of events, the 58th NBA All-Star Game broke out.
In a year of NBA action, where unsavory characters like Starbury are disgracing the game with spoiled rotten tactics and “premier players” like Iverson, Baron Davis and Chris Webber are underperforming and highly overpaid, I feel like the few remaining Americans that call themselves basketball fans were looking forward to simplicity. A back to the essence, high flying high scoring game. With a final result that totaled a combined 265 points scored, plenty of action was certainly had. It’s just that viewers had to sit through an endless bombardment of commercialism and sideshow antics just to get to what they wanted to see.
